Clone Oliver and Petracca and play them in all 22 spots :roos:

That's going to take 16 weeks and by then the season is as good as over.

How about something more realistic .... like my time machine which we can use to draft Ollie Wines and Dustin Martin.

His kicking was costly.

Yep, but if the replacement is Tyson that's not exactly anything new.

I'm not a Tyson fan but he would have been better than Maynard today.

If we are going to play Wagner as the third tall I'd prefer we play Oscar and Frost and have Lever third tall to play the intercept role. I also think playing Maynard as a  tagger was a poor decision and as much as he puts in, he isn't a natural footballer at the moment.

Jetta & Hibberd played really poor games today so I will back them both in to play a lot better for the remainder of the season. Lewis was poor early but better in the last quarter and a half. He plays much better as the sweeper these days. Garlett was obviously poor but I'll also be backing him in to bounce back and put it down to match fitness.

Without Viney we need more ball winners in the middle. People say Tyson can butcher the ball, well I would've loved a guy who can rack up 30 touches running through the middle today to help Oliver and Petracca.

My team for Round 2:

B:       Jetta         Frost          Hibberd

HB:    Lever        O Mac         Lewis

C:      Hunt          Tyson         Vince

HF:    Petracca   Hogan       ANB

F:      Garlett        Pedo         Melksham

R:      Gawn         Oliver       Jones

Int:   Salem     Fritsch      Brayshaw     Hannan

Ins:  Tyson      Brayshaw     Frost

Out: Maynard    Wagner    Harmes

Seems reasonably clear cut, but come Thursday evening, I'm sure there will be some curve balls.

Tyson for Maynard is a no brainer

Out: Maynard

In: Tyson

Hannan and Garlett safe under the "nobody obviously better" rule, especially with the VFL not in action yet (side note: it's a huge nuisance that the VFL start so much later). I don't see Brayshaw and/or Bugg as a significant upgrade at this point and I don't agree with constantly shuffling fringe players in and out.

No interest in dropping Wagner from me. Lifted in the second half and his tackling and general pressure was significant.

With the ball - yes. Without the ball - I'm not so sure. Maynard kept Gaz in front of him for large parts of the day and played a big role in a really good centre square effort all day. No Danger but they had Gaz, Selwood, Duncan, Kelly and others and without Viney and with Petracca used sparingly after half time we could cover off and get some pressure on Geelong. Too often I see Tyson desperately trying to chase an opponent from a stoppage. Aside from a burst in the 2nd quarter I thought we were really good at avoiding the bad break down clearances where a team walks the ball out.

agree with everything you say Nasher but I don't see Brayshaw as fringe .... when on song he can be top 15 if not better

If Bugg brought anything to the side last year, it was forward pressure.

We don't need both Hannan and Fritsch in the side. I'd drop Hannan for Bugg.

Maynard must go - Tyson isn't any quicker but can actually do something with the football.

I didn't think Wagner's second half was good enough to be retained, but two changes might be enough.

Garlett, ANB and Harmes all need to work twice as hard next week.

I focussed on Wagner today, because I didn’t think he was up to it! Perhaps his pressure & tackling was good in the 2nd half, but he is just awful when he gets the ball, always picks the wrong option. Maynard the same!

pick any of the other 4 who missed out from Tyson, Brayshaw, Bugg & Frost and we win today!

Tyson and Brayshaw are must haves.

Maynard, Wagner,   out  Hannan,  Garlett, Lewis  are on shakey ground.

Maynard and Wagner for Tyson and Brayshaw. E Graders for D Graders. How exciting.

I'd start getting games into Spargo and Baker.

Clearly this group is just making up the numbers. Start planning for after Lewis, Vince and Jones.

Maynard definitely out, looked out of his depth and his disposal was very very poor.

Wagner improved as the game wore on so should be ok for Round 2, even though I am not his biggest fan.

Garlett won't be dropped but he looked ill, slow and disinterested. Shocker.

Hannan and Fritsch can't be on the same side so oje of them out, probably Hannan.

Tyson and Brayshaw straight in.

COuld Salem be an out?

if so bring in bugg.

Great just what we need more of, players who waste their disposals and are poorly disciplined.

Salem was ok until his massive fall. His ball use is exceptional important to us.

For me lots of players can be dropped but we must must bring in Tyson. We are taking the [censored] if we think we will win games with Maynard and Harmes in the Centre bounce. It ain’t happening and it shouldn’t happen when we have 2 very good inside mids waiting to come in.

It's probably just me, but I thought Maynard was far from our worst player.  15 touches, 7 tackles, 5 clearances.  His disposal leaves a bit to be desired but the bloke has a dip.  There were plenty of others who had less influence on the game than him (ANB, Salem, Garlett, Hannan etc.)

He may get dropped, but I think the harsh criticism is a little unfair on a bloke playing just his second game of AFL footy and who was given the task of attempting to curb one of the best players of our generation.

Frost has to play until Tom McDonald comes in. Lever is NOT a one on one defender.I said this on another post during the week. We basically took him away from his natural game. Awful selections.

Tyson and Brayshaw for Maynard and Tyson for anyone , but probably Garlett. He could not have given and stuff about being out there today.

This is what I thought that we were short one tall.   But thought the brains trust is going for a strong running side. But the Cats won to much 1st touch's.

And the structure, with our defence too open, for too long.

I hope we're past the bloke has a dip stage 'Wise' or we're heading backwards.

We won't win a flag with Vince &/or Lewis on the field.   But they are needed, whilst we are all so inexperienced, footy uneducated.

They are they're to lead the right way, & to teach and stabilise, but they are looong in tooth.

We need Sloane and maybe one other yet, to replace these 2 Veterans.

We won't do much of anything until Viney's about 26Yrs of age.

Thats when IMO, our list will really come  of age.

True.  It wasn't a great choice of words.  I just feel as though, for a bloke with just 2 games under his belt, he's copping some rather harsh criticism that I don't think is necessarily warranted at the moment.  Especially in light of the fact that there were others who were worse.

I'll admit he still needs to add polish to his game, and his disposal is average, but I think there is something to work with there.

Surprised how many want Wagner dropped.

His second half was actually pretty good and he hit the majority of his targets. I think some of you have made your mind up about him and can't see the good stuff he did.

Out: Maynard, Hannan/Fritsch

In: Tyson, Brayshaw.

Out. Maynard, Garlett and Goodwin

In.   Tyson, Brayshaw and Northey.

Uh the third one was a bit tongue in cheek. We used to win the close ones under Northey.

6 day break and warm in Brisbane. 3 changes should be minimum. Who would know with this selection panel? Joel Smith not far away. Would love him back soon.

Melksham and ANB - skills not good enough at AFL level/intensity. They have had lots of chances. (ANB a great disappointment after an A+ preseason.)

Nothing I saw has me wanting Maynard and Wagner out. (eg Wagner tackle on Selwood.)

We lost because of 20 pathetic minutes, not individual players.

Pre-condition to play: hardness!

Maynard has to go. Just a VFL player. Fritsch deserves another chance. Not sure on Brayshaw and Tyson as replacements for anyone as they are both slow and Lions are quick in mid field. Need some pace on the hard Gabba deck.

In: Frost  Gus and Tyson

Out: Wagner Maynard and Gartlett  (was poor today)

I agree.

Frost gives us strength and height down back & he breaks the line and runs at every chance and will free up Lever.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
