What's wrong with someone who speaks well and plays football well? Not like they're mutually exclusive.

Nothing is wrong with that player.

But it is a lousy reference, to sound out footy players,,,, based on speech, etiquette, curtsy, or how hard the handshake is.

It is all irrelevant,,, and at a club which is known for turning its nose up at certain types as recruits, in the past... it is high time this club got its own head our of it's own derrière.

That 'IS',  Watt is wrong_

It helps to have some players who can speak lucidly, rationally and with knowledge of the game, to be a good front for the club.

It's not the prime selection criteria for talent (Dustin Martin being the prime example), but it's not totally irrelevant. Imagine if the only thing every player on your team could do was grunt and answer in one syllable.

I could have sworn he was listed at 197cm when he was drafted.

If Weid can start clunking most of the marks he gets his hands to, watch out!

He's doing a great job for us at the moment, and he should be even better next year.

it should not be the headline story of a player who wants to represent the Mfc.

We should not care if they cannot read or write as players.... other than to help them from any disadvantage.

We should not put 0xford scholars on pedestals,,, whilst the Harmes's and Oliver's are left as an ordinary top bloke and great footy player.

Mike Fitzpatrick is an oxford scholar, and rich person financially.  And I for one could not give a toss about him.  In fact, i regard Brett 'mumbles' Bailey, higher the that [censored] from the Blues.

Give me John Fidge, give me Daryl Cox. give me Jacko.  all great servants and charactrs of the game.

.... and let those grammarians, 'skip to the loo, my darling'.

Who is putting them on a pedestal?

Some players just have a talent for clean interviews. Weideman is obviously one - you only had to listen to his draft interview when Oliver was interviewed at the same time; the difference was stark.

Tom McDonald is another I enjoy, as is Jordan Lewis. Funnily enough, these are the players that the club wheels out when the media monster needs to be fed. I find both our skippers to be boring and rambly to listen to, but that doesn’t in any way diminish my appreciation for them as players.

It’s just a skill you need to have some of around the club, and it’s a nice discovery when a young player shows it. Nobody treats it like the most important aspect.

I disagree @Nasher

I believe we should recruit a chronic stutterer with multiple personality disorder who is currently pushing trolleys for Woolworths at Highpoint.

You can't buy that type of cred.

He has long arms and takes the ball at the highest point.  Hoping to see a few contract announcements over next few days, Oscar, Frost and this bloke

Good contribution knuckle dragger. The ball definitely swings strongly and looks like he miskicked it. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t aiming at goals, but he definitely didn’t kick it sweetly

IMO that's not correct.  Weed is a beautiful kick, I watched it on "all the goals" and that spun as a perfect drop-punt with late fade - only the best can kick that kick.

Yep agree.. He has a classically correct kicking action. That goal on a stiff angle was a pearler. The Weidemans have DNA as good kickers ;)

Deep down it must really bug Murray that we got him! I’m sure they are very proud.

My husband who is a Pies man hates the fact Sam is playing for the Dees. I told him to suck it up. ?

As he always was, developing nicely.

Completely agree. He's showing all the hallmarks of a classic forward. I hope we see the value in Weids (and give him time to further develop - there's no rush!) and make sure he stays with us beyond his current contract.

I know, I know - I get asked this a lot. He is actually a good guy and happily accepts the Melbourne membership I give him every year for Christmas. He is coming to the match next Friday and will be cheering for the Dees and wearing his members scarf.

However it will be a completely different story if our paths cross with Collingwood in the finals!!

A fairly in depth article about Sam from the AFL site. Love that both his father and grandfather also made their finals debuts against the Cats. Nice time of the year to hit your best form of your life

Maybe, just maybe Weeds put it together enough this week for him to retain his spot going into next season.

He has also been working on his ruck craft which gives an extra dimension to his game that he didn't really have last season.

My expectations are low, but I wouldn't be surprised if played well enough to retain his spot moving forward.

He just has to get 'em, hold 'em, and kick 'em. He needs some protection in all three.

Well, they do say that people marry their opposites!  Certainly couldn't be any truer in this instance!  After all, if there was ever a total opposite of "The Melbourne Footy Club, the greatest football club in the world", it would certainly be Collingwood!!

My heart, beating true for the red and the blue nonetheless, couldn't ' stand the tension.

Still, the only thing better than thrashing Collingwood is beating them by a point, after the siren, and more so if it is from a controversial (or better still a blatantly incorrect) free to us.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
