How hard is it to specify what the [censored] injury is?

Seriously?

Agreed.

I'm sure Misson refers to it as an ankle rather than a foot injury though...

For a mid who can't get in the running miles done in the pre-season, it affects their endurance come the real game.

Swimmers and cyclists (especially) build endurance just fine without running.

Add to that, Viney's been in the system for a few years now and there's a base level of endurance that starts to carry forward. When you can't train, it's the high-end, short-term fitness that you lose first.

He'll still need running, of course, but it's more about what's going on with his feet/legs (muscular) than endurance.

That's because swimmers and cyclists don't have to run.

Put them on a footy field for 10mins and see how fine they are 'bing'.

...players need endurance and match fitness for a contact sport. Sport specific training is very important at any level let alone the elite level.

Any contribution we get from Viney in 2018 will be a bonus to my way of thinking.

It's pretty clear that we stuffed his foot by letting him play too early and, Jack being Jack, he's not the person to lie down and rest for weeks on end. The medical stuff needed to put on their big boy pants and tell him to rest for the full 6 weeks, not cave in after 2.

The longer Viney is off his feet through the pre season, the further he falls behind the standard that is required to perform at the elite level. I'm sure his G&D will get him to a certain point, but that is not where we need him to be.

Came back way too early.

Also not sure why Misson is still at the club?  Been there what, 5 seasons now, and we always fade at seasons end or have a huge injury list.

I may be wrong but I think that was a reference to regaining full mobility in his ankle after losing it from an extended period in the moonboot.  Maybe @Webber could advise?

The curse of the Jack's strikes yet again .... fingers crossed but it has the sounds of a long term impact injury.

PS sorry no idea why all the blank space appears below

I would suggest footy fans, especially 2-4 Demons fans, consistently on the back end of dubious football news, have every right to be skeptical.

Footy is lies.

The AFL hates us

The umpires hate us

The players and staff lie to us

Blah blah blah ...

hope it's not too serious. i would have thought a hot spot should have mended by now. Long time ago i had a hairline fracture in my heel which mended itself in less time and i didn't use any aids at all because I only found out after it had mended via xray.

It is a matter of intensity as well. No disrespect DC but I doubt you were doing AFL player-level training loads!

It does sound like they are being ultra cautious, and with good reason. This bloke is an 8-year blue-chip investment. Playing the long game: we'd take one season at 85-90% output due to a delayed pre-season if the next 7 are at 100%.

jfyi, thrice it was triple jumping which is hell on your feet. Was aths season and i combined the very strange mix of long jump, triple jump and 800 metres with the triple being my forte - lol

Anyway, my point was querying whether it was just a bone hot spot. Jack has been off foot load for a long time now, longer than would seem necessary for a non fracture. I suspect it is more than just a hot spot........but i can understand the club down-playing it

Haven't seen a swimmer swim without using their feet and cyclist cycle without using their feet. Tough to maintain any semblance of fitness when you have to be off your feet.

On an unrelated topic seeing as you mentioned cyclists. I'm sure this will be a short derailment. Go Richie Porte. Just heard an SBS Podcast interview with him. Back on the bike. Had his first hit out in a criterium. Said it wasn't racing as he was at the back and was suffering. Looking forward to Tour Down Under. One of his favourite races. Was asked who'd win an arm wrestle with Chris Froome. He said him. I suggest they stay away from one Jack Viney.  Froomy has been down to Tassie in the past to stay with him and train. Roll on 2018.

Guess we can sell off that line of Wattbikes we invested in a few years back and let Jones, Garlett etc. know that they can stop wasting their time with boxing.

A great Christmas present indeed:  Viney gives Dees an early Christmas present

Not sure about this article.

It says he's got the all clear from his specialist but he has to continue to train "off legs" until Christmas and will join the main group early Jan. Hard to see him training with the main group if he isn't even on legs until then.

Personally I don't mind if it takes until July (although 1 Jan would be preferable) as long as when he comes back he's completely over the injury forever.

Which means he'll probably need January to be in the rehab group and then resume full training in Feb.

I can see Viney having a slow start to the season, firing up mid season and then tiring in the last few weeks. There's a reason everyone bangs on about the benefits of an uninterrupted pre-season.

I know exactly what you are saying IT, but both Misso and Jack have said on several occasions that Jack's injury would be managed conservatively, and if 'conservative management' means that Jack will be training with the main group early in January, then I'm happy to take it at face value and be thrilled about it.  Of course, that doesn't mean that I won't be somewhat nervous about the possibility of the injury recurring , but that's just standard, par for the course, MFCSS kicking in.

Would you please remind me what MFCSS stands for. I read it once a month or two ago and have forgotten and it has evidently really taken off on here more recently.

It is believed that only a premiership can relieve the symptoms. Unfortunately there is no known cure.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
