Thanks for all of your work on this @Lucifer's Hero - with Gus till 22 and Jetta to 21 we are really just waiting on OMac's signature at the moment. The rest you wouldn't imagine will be on more than a 2 year deal and there is no one on that list I'd be concerned if they hadn't put pen to paper before trade season.

2019 is really interesting with Salem, ANB, Stretch and Weiderman OOC, but the big story will of course be Hogan. I cannot imagine that they'd want that dragging out next year and I assume they'd look to sign him over the off-season up until his free agency begins (2021).

Yep, of the 14 uncontracted players left now that Angus and Jetta have signed, I have between eight and 10 missing out for next season with Oscar and Vanders (assuming he survives the season with his ankle still intact) the ones that are imperative. I also feel Jordy and Jeffy have big decisions to make on their futures, which will be determined by their involvement in the run home and hopefully by finals. Even though he's not re-signed, Bernie's post-AFL career appears set with his Pride Real Estate, so it's hard to imagine him staying beyond this season.

Assuming we manage to snaffle Gaff, then when you look at our potential Rd 1 side and key back-ups for next year on paper based on who has signed and my two imperatives - it's pretty daunting.

Defenders: Hibberd, Jetta, Salem, Hunt, J.Smith, Oscar, Frost - Lever (when fit) Wagner, Petty

Mids: Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Gaff, Jones, Harmes, Fritsch, Gawn - Tyson Stretch Baker Maynard

Forwards: Hogan, T.Mac, Melky, ANB, Spargo, Petracca, Vanders - Hannan, Weid

When looking at overall list structure, we obviously will need to decide who is our best option at providing back-up for Gawn, although clearly we won't be able to lure a frontliner because we have the best and any back-up is unlikely to get a game, unless there is injury.

As we have already decided on one of our project rucks in Bradtke, then we don't really need to keep more than one of Pedo, King and Filipovic.

And if Pedo's had enough of waiting, then a younger fringe tall who can also play forward such as Freo's Matt Taberner might be worth pursuing for a lower order pick.

You would also think that at least one of Bugg, Kent, JKH and Balic will be offered a new deal.

I suppose it's a good thing that besides OMac (who sounds likely to sign soon) and Vince (likely to retire), none of the others guys who haven't got contracts for next year have been regular players. Kent (3), Peds (3), JHK (2), Bugg (3) and TSmith (4) have had limited games while so far AVB, McKenna, Keilty, Johnstone, King, Flip and Balic have none and overall of those only really Kent, AVB & McKenna have had injury issues.

You’d expect there would be a little bit of “if you find a good contract somewhere else, we’ll help you” with a few of them but I cannot imagine they’ll want another 8 changes that we had last year.

14 out of contract and a little bit of projection - id assume:

Offered new: Oscar, AVB, Vince, Balic, Kent, T Smith,

Sign if there is no interest: Johnson, Bugg, JKH, Pedo

i have no idea: King, Flip, McKenna, Keilty.

Its tough as you have til have 3 draftees. McKenna could go to a rookie list with no issues. I can’t see any of our rookies being upgraded (Maynard, Flip, Kielty, Smith) bar Tim Smith.

Honestly it will be tough to work out who goes because we’ve all seen Bugg at his best and he clearly is an AFL player; we assume that one of Flip or King goes; JKH I thought would look for other opportunities but if he stays in our side for a few more weeks will be hard not to offer a contract; Kent clearly can be best 22; Johnson is developing as a small defender but maybe he goes?; I’m thinking maybe Dec might be on the way out sadly and maybe Pedo as well. Feel it does leave us short though in the backline.

My Prediction with a strong bias towards what i like, would be:
Offered new: Oscar, AVB, Johnstone (will replace nev in the future), Pedo, McKenna (1yr max.), TSmith, Balic (1yr max.), and the two rucks Flip and King

Leaves Bugg, JKH, Kent (has been offered better deals in perth i believe), Keilty to be delisted theyve had their chances, wont play in our next premiership

I’m starting to get pretty worried that if Keilty doesn’t get a guernsey this season, given the club has to delist a certain amount of people and given this year is supposed to be a ‘super draft’ that he might find himself without a job next year.

He’s been playing good VFL footy and I’d love more then nothing then for him to get at least get 1 senior game to show what he has at that level, but’s it’s looking more and more unlikely :(

Update for Jetta and Brayshaw contract extensions.  Both critical extensions.

Where would we be this year without these two.  Jetta has held up the backline and Gus shouldering the load (with Oliver) in the middle when the more experienced haven't.  Couldn't be happier with both of them sticking with the Dees.

Especially pleased for Jetta because he has been through all the tough times and done it the hard way.

Both have shown tremendous class and resilience.  Their reward will come (and I don't mean $).

It is generally said that a player needs 5 preseasons (ie about 100 games) to a have an AFL match hardened body and experience.  With the likes of Oscar, Hogan, Salem, Oliver, Brayshaw and Lever barely half way there, it is scary how good we can become.  Especially with the 'more experienced' Gawn, Viney, Tom McD, Hibberd, Melksham (and with the less than 50 game players yet to make their mark).

If not this year, the Day of the Demons is coming!

It will be a real shame if he puts in two years of hard work and doesn't get an AFL game.  How good would it be for him to run out on the G, eh?  Hope he gets another year.  And, I hope that whatever happens you keep posting on here.  Your measured and insightful posts are often a steadying presence amongst many emotional Demonland supporters.

Updated for Harley Balic's retirement.

His retirement gives us our first 2018 List vacancy.  While I always find it sad to see a Demon player depart it seems the best for him and will make the Club's list management that tad easier.

That leaves 10 listed players and 3 'A' rookies, OOC.  OMac is in discussions with the club so just a matter of time.  Based on recent selections I would expect AVdB, JKH to be given contracts.

On my reckoning that will be 7 listed players OOC.

Not sure if we can keep the 3 'A' rookies another year without offering them a contract.  Anyone know?

Some of the OOC's will have their papers stamped and some will have to wait until the end of the trade/draft period to see who we get.  Anxious wait for some.

2 open list spots now with Bernie retiring.

High quality free agent signings looking unlikely, but at the same time trade outs of guys like Frost and Tyson don't seem so popular all of a sudden. Not sure what Garlett will do, probably a chance that he stays on the list for salary reasons even if he doesn't play on.

12 more to decide on.
Oscar - stays unless we do a Steve May trade
Vanders - stays
JKH - leaning towards stays, he surely has more faith he can play at the level now than 10 weeks ago

Bugg - goes
Filipovic - probably goes
Kent - leaves if someone else wants him, otherwise could stay
Pedersen, Keilty, T Smith, King - got to keep some combination of at least 2 of these guys for tall depth. If we delist them we'll need state league or delisted player back up replacements in the ruck, key defender and forward.
McKenna and Johnstone - wait and see based on other list changes

I think it's either the 1st or the end of October, most clubs obviously let their players know well before that. With the trade period starting mid Oct, any unsigned players technically become de-listed free agents and can be picked up in that time.

So time is quickly running out for O mac to sign... interesting

What seems to be the hold up with this one?

Done a pretty good job for a young bloke in a tough role.

A few blips here and there but shown enough for a bit of a pay rise.

Updated for Vince's retirement ?, Oscar's contract renewal? and Bradtke joining us in November.

Have also updated the format to show player status and to track list changes, vacancies, ins/outs, draft picks.

In terms of list changes - we have eight listed players and three  'A' Rookies out of contract.  We must take 3 players in the draft (which could be a rookie conversion to senior list).

Based on performace in recent weeks a contract for Vandenberg to be a no-brainer.  And given other recent selections JKH and T Smith appear likely to be contracted.

We don't have a strong draft hand and with the AFL's largesse in dispensing priority picks  and favourable FA compensation picks plus Academy and Father/Son picks our first pick is likely around pick 40!

No mail, but I am expecting some contracted players to be traded out if the right opportunity comes up.  However, I doubt there will be many (or any) that will want to go.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
