Only Melbourne could debut a young key defender against a team that can't score, allow 119 points against and have said kid be a key standout contributor that was the team's defensive ineptness on the day.

Bravo, Melbourne. Bravo.

Yep this almost harks back to the dismal Neeld years Gee never saw that coming!

What do we think of Petty second up?

I thought he looked totally different to his debut. Confident, gathered several intercept possessions and i thought he took a great pack mark which wasn’t paid. Good return to AFL level.

I am a big fan of Petty and have been calling for him to come into the side earlier on.

He is just someone where you just need to get games into. He showed glimpse of his strong intercepting marking and uses the ball extremely well.

Once he starts to get some experince and comfortable at this level he will start to go for his marks instead of punching it like he did in the third when he could have just taken an uncontested mark.

He'll play again next week.

What a difference a year makes, eh!  Really liked his game.

A number of reports today are saying he touched the ball that was declared an 'umpires call' goal.  Just wish he had ranted and raved to show he had touched it to put some doubt into the umpires mind.  As BT said if the player touching the ball doesn't indicate such it is a pretty good sign that he didn't and the umpires use it as a guide.

Imagine the hullabaloo if it had been McGovern or Hurn saying they touched it even if they didn't!

A little learning for a newbie.

He will be a valuable member of our team.

For the love of god, please give him a good run of games in a row.

Can't stand players getting 1 or 2 games and then being dropped

I thought he was ok. he should play more games now that finals look a distant dream for us. I want to see more of Baker too. give them a good run of games and see what they've got to offer us going forward.

Completely unrecognisable from the kid that got towelled-up against stkilda last year.

Played with aggression and confidence.

A very exciting prospect.

will play again, as next week against gw$ we have to combat cameron, himmelberg, and finlayson

may as well play him along with Baker until the bye at least.

The never ending injuries make finals etc an ever more difficult task.

Would like to see if we can get the Preuss/ Gawn system working. He's a hard man to mark and Garlett should be able to work off him up forward. Could become our lesser version of Mason Cox.

i reckon he could be a significantly more valuable player than cox

fitness remains his biggest issue

100% Clint, that was my vibe -  it's a shame for Lewis, but his little slip sliding goose is cooked...

Petty is 11 cm taller than Lewis and they are different types of players so I expect Lewis to get his spot back when fit, especially as Goodwin values his leadership.  And, I predict Hore to be Lewis' permanent replacement when he retires.  Hore is imv leading the race for that spot.

He and Frost can play in the same backline as Lever and May.. Oscar is the odd man out

Frost, Lever, May, OMac and Petty are between 193cm and 197cm.  I reckon we can only play 3 talls at most in a game.  When all our first choice defenders return or in 2020 Petty could easily replace Frost and OMac, so hopefully Petty gets more games while our other talls are out.

I can see our back 6 in 2020 as:  Lever, May, Petty, Jetta, Hibberd and Hore freeing Salem and Fritsch to play further up the field.

One thing is for sure there will be plenty of competition for the back 6 especially if Baker, Sparrow, J.Smith start making an impact.

that's not a bad back six plus two defensive wingmen

big q's around fitness of may and lever, and continued development of petty

Let's just call that his debut and forget the debacle last year at the G. That was much more like what I was hoping to see from him.

I hope you are right with your assessment. I'm looking forward to seeing Lever and May all in the back line together which will completely change the structure of the back line. I hope they give Harrison more time and give him more games.

The midfield and forwards ruined his debut, turned the ball over in dangerous spots time and time again and left him exposed. He appears a very solid player.

Thats a slow back 6, Luce.

Hibberd is the quickest, and that's not a compliment

agreed its slow, but think you might find May the quickest. I think we have to develop a quick backman soon but Hibberd, May, Frost aren't slow. We just need that clever kicking line breaker like Houli, Saad to get us out of trouble sometimes.

Petty is very lean but plays smart for his age. He is our future and this kid  had to wait for his turn again . This time he looked that he can belong out there with the best of them. Harry will improve and when he has a couple of preseasons  and puts a bit of size on him might he end up being a Key  CHB. Is certainly worth persisting with. Only a 19 yo.

I would like to see Hunty off half back breaking the lines receiving a Petty handball and kicking one of his trade mark goals like he used to.  M Hore is a great pick up and has been a consistent performer as well.  The youngsters are doing ok.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
