Need to get 80,000 at the G round 1. Though that’s 50,000 Cats most likely, it’s a blockbuster round 1.  Get games v Pies v Bombers v Tigers at the G plus sell off games to NT and the $$$$ roll in.  Need to beat the pussyfooters round 1

So the drug cheats get rewarded with a friday night game.  makes me sick, lets hope the crows belt them

Surely Cats V Dees would have been ideal for Sat night at the G?  and not two average sides who won't make finals (hawks v pies)?

anyway - still cant wait for the game! thank god its at the G!

Viney will tag Ablett and Selwood at the same time.  Run Gary into the MCG turf and break Ducky Selwood's spirit like usual

If we do, we should then be pursuing this as an ongoing feature game for future Rounds 1, similar to the Richmond v Carlton opening round.

Knowing Ablett he will probably do a bad hammy at training and miss the first 4 rounds anyway

Whinge whine carp complain   the whole fixture isn't out yet   wait for the Home game at Etihad

Didn't realise Hillsong was 3.20 on a Sunday and it clashes

May even go to Alice this year, done Darwin 3 times

Just saw this on the BigFooty Facebook page. Adelaide twice was a given, and yet another trip to Sleepy Hollow.

Despite the financial windfall I'm yet to see what advantage the NT arrangement gives the club.

Also that's two less games I can see in Melbourne

Er reciprocal Home game means nothing?

Thrilled with a home game against the Cats in round 1. Its a brilliant test for us and there's sure to be a massive crowd which will be fantastic exposure for the club.

Hopefully there's also a couple Friday night games in store for us.

Wait a second.

Essendon made the finals.

Yet they only play only one top 6 team twice.  We play two.

They play two bottom 6s teams twice. We only play one.

How the hell can the AFL explain this?    Once again we get shafted, while they look after their beloved drug  cheats yet again.

The Western Bulldogs were also looked after? WHy is it that every season we get the worst fixture?   PJ needs to grow some balls, although its way too late now, the fixture is done.  FMD.

that better not be the correct fixture.  Dons have another dream run!  and we get shafted again

figured we would play the Cats twice and we need our annual trip the freeway

not much has changed really.   wait for the one friday night game for us and 5 for essendon

Playing Adel and Freo In NT is a [censored] joke. We should be playing another Victorian team otherwise what’s the advantage?

The club needs to end this stupid sponsorship ASAP!!

Agree

playing these two teams in Melbourne we stand a god chance of winning both. Playing in the NT turns these into 50/50 games at best.

Let's Ditch Darwin !

The problem with your Essendons, Collingwoods and Richmonds, they have these showcase games each year, so depending on when they are scheduled for, they will either play that team once or twice.  Reality is, Essendon could finish on the bottom, and Collingwood on top, yet they generally play each other twice in a season.

I was hoping that going in to 2018, we'd have a thread about the fixture where no-one gives a toss about who we play, where we play them, or wholes plays who, mainly because we are a stronger side and can beat anyone, anywhere at any time.  Clearly too much to hope.

It's any wonder that any other team and their supporters still don't rate us, they only have to listen to the pizzing and moaning of our own supporters about trivial and at times nonsensical issues.

This structured fixture is increasingly becoming a joke.

When finals positions are decided by a few percentage points a compromised draw is a travesty.

Sure it maximises revenue for the game but equally it entrenches the revenue streams in the larger clubs.

It is without doubt that the "compromised" draw has helped even up the competition.  We should've made the most of our draw this year, but failed (enter the 4 x consecutive 6 day break arguments).  Fortunately we are in the middle group of teams that really do have no excuse to aim for top 4.

Our draw will be significantly easier than the likes of Geelong.  I bet we don't hear them whinge as much as what some on here are/will.

I'm excited about the Dees V Geelong opener.

It is time for us to start beating Geelong. If we are to be serious contenders in 2018, these are the sorts of huge games we need to win in order for a young side to have belief that anything is possible.

Bring it on.

the FIXture doesn't worry me.

We only have 9 home games at the G,  we have to play AWAY from home on 13 occasions

to make finals and win the cup we are going to have to do it as the away team anyway

Posted (edited)

Here's a simple way of looking at it.  We have 12 games of 22 against sides that we finished above of in 2017.  It can be argued that we are developing better than all of those sides below us.  If we want to be a serious finals contender, there is no reason why we shouldn't win each of these games.

Of the remaining 10 games, we would need to win a minimum of 2.  14 wins and % had you in the Top 4 this year.

Edit - we won 4 games this year against sides that finished above us.

The alternative view is that games against interstate clubs played at the MCG draw smaller crowds than games played there against Victorian teams. Smaller crowds means less revenue and a worse atmosphere which discourages the Free-to-Air broadcaster from wanting to broadcast such games in prime time.

So, if you look at the bigger picture, the commercial value of the NT deal (direct revenue plus the commercial advantage of playing Victorian teams at the MCG) may be more valuable to the club overall than the alternative.

Of course I would prefer not having to play home games away from the MCG, but reality bites.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
