It is not about what they know about Jack as a footballer, it is more about what they believe how much MFC values Jack. That determines to some degree how much they have to bid to get him if they want him. Now knowing that we don't value him means they won't be putting in a high bid. That is my point why telegraph our position and not alternatively be working behind the scenes looking for a suitable trade deal as we nearly pulled off with Jack Trengove with Richmond a few years ago only the medical exam stopping us getting a first round pick as compo.

Bang on - the vitriol some Demon "supporters" show Jack Watts  is disappointing. 

I'm sure if he goes to Port he will have a few good seasons with less pressure. 

Can't change people's perceptions here, to me it is a bad decision, but familiarity breeds contempt and that  is a big part of the problem.. Posters and supporters feel cheated , frustrated at the fact that Jack  is not the mercurial saviour he was expected to be. 

People who want to trade him out look likely to get their wish. 

For me just have to agree to disagree I suppose. Another divisive post season decision by the MFC in the last 10 years.

But what are we telegraphing? As I said, from what I can see, all clubs (and players) know pretty well everything about every club and what's going on behind the scenes. For example, the idea that we can somehow hide the fact that Jack turned up to pre-season underdone and then didn't really apply himself to the levels required ... hard to see it.

If it's true about all the first hand accounts that Watts is lazy and dosent apply and Challenge himself and true that the Club has booted him that's a step in the right direction.

Sorry to tell you but Jack is not the sole reason we don't come close to what the last two premiers have dished up in their respective finals campaigns. His departure does not put us closer either. This thread's got momentum because a section of the MFC supporter base do give a damn about the ousting of a clubman. But , as I said in another post; agree to disagree.

Don't know how divisive it is on the inside. Looks like the FD and players - at least the leaders - are all on the same page here.

As for vitriol, what vitriol? Jack's a nice guy, with some real skills, but there are two sides to every discussion and if you want to build the hard, win-at-all-costs culture that we've seen at clubs like Hawthorn or the Swans, then you have to make hard, win-at-all-costs decisions. Maybe this is one of them.

I have a solution for his lack of effort .. What if the AFL were to allow Watts to wear his board shorts whilst playing.. he might make more of an effort to win the footy & get himself on camera.

Watts generally stands up in big games. He's been prominent in most if not all of our big wins, especially the ones in our down years. Watts is gone, but don't make stuff up.

Building a list, you need intensity players and you need skill players. One of the reasons the Tiges were able to sustain their pressure on GF was that they were able to hurt the Crows with their skill going the other way. If they'd had a string of skill errors or bad turnovers, or some bad misses in front of goal, would have made it very hard to sustain that pressure. It's ridiculous to say that if you have intensity, you can do without skill. If we keep turning it over because we neglect skills, you can enjoy seeing 22 men applying manic pressure for no result.

And again, for those of you who still haven't heard what I've said in a number of posts: I'm NOT arguing for Watts to stay. I'm arguing that we have to replace his skills, and improve the skills right across the team (like Tiges have done this year, so that their pressure actually counts for something), or we're going nowhere.

You picked the 15 that you think in your opinion are better than JW l am sure he would then fit in your 22 .  I don't think that you are a critic of JW but if he leaves, I wonder if you would be happy when he does play well for someone else? Howerver he had a very good season or 2 under Roos, he didn't drop him when he had a lean period JW asked to be dropped and only for that one match and came back better. ROOS didn't degrade him like NEELD and GOODWIN had done.

Don’t be surprised if Paul Roos is secretly attempting to increase the value of Watts by making those statements. Roosy of all people knows the club is bigger than any one individual & he loves the dees. He will want us coming out on top from this trade. & this is a really sneaky way to help our cause.

This is Goodwin not acknowledging a 3- year contract. Goodwin failed to make the finals. Who is to blame?? Jack Watts ??

Really divisive decision to the footy club. No basis. No discipline issues. Can Goodwin get the best from Watts. No he chooses to tell him to ‘explore options to GO ELSEWHERE ‘. That means I don’t want you.

Of course  you might be right no arguing there. maybe you can read between the lines however there is no harm in listening to it .

Except that every other club is fully aware that if it's gone this far, we're not going to fight hard to keep him.

So they're going to bid much lower than they'd normally give up, and then find our FD's point of resistance. I'd say could be as low as late 2nd or early third.

And the club that gets him will be scratching it's head over why he was so badly thought of at Melbourne.

Lovely twist of the knife in your last sentence. Probably not necessary.

Don't think it's clear at all that "everyone has had enough".

All we know so far is that the coaches don't want him. And "coaches", as another poster said, is mainly Goodwin & Macca "and that's good enough for me". However the other coaches feel, they'll have to toe the line anyway.

It may be that Roos was his only defender in the previous coaching groups, and now that Roos is out of the picture, Watts is fair game. Seemed to catch Roos by surprise though - especially that Watts is being painted as a negative influence.

And I'm quite prepared to believe that Viney snr wants him out, so that's 3 very powerful guys in the FD. No idea whether the rest of the FD agree, but again, they'll have to toe the line. As will the team leaders such as Jones, whatever he really thinks about it. Tyson (who of course isn't a team leader, and may not have been told too much about toeing the line) came close to saying, "I have no idea what he's done to warrant kicking him out, must be more to it that I'm not aware of. I hope he'll stay." Doesn't sound like a unanimous endorsement from the playing group ... yet (it may still come). They'll all have to toe the line eventually though.

And so far we have no idea what the executive, the marketing dept, the membership dept, the corporate relations dept all think about it. They stand to lose a bit by him going too, and would be right on top of whether or not he's a bad influence around the club. In the end, they'll have to go with the decision made by their two senior coaches and the FD head.

Of course, I could be wrong and the whole club might have just been waiting for half an excuse to kick him out. Or maybe they don't care either way. GNF and others, do you have any mail about how others around the club feel about it? Are they as enthusiastic about MFC without Watts as the "nice guys finish last" brigade here?

I have supported this club for a very long time.

I regard this as one of the saddest developments during this time.

And this really sucks following a season filled with so much optimism and excitement.

And if it's not true, or highly exaggerated? They're not first-hand accounts, by the way. Apart from the cardinal sin of chatting to fans at preseason training.

Again, Watts is no longer a Melbourne player. I don't know what's achieved by continuing to demonise him now.

My fear is that If our senior coaches agree with most of this board that Watts leaving will only have good results, then they're blind to some important deficiencies that will need to be corrected if we're going to improve next year, and that we're now more deficient in without Watts.

For example, hitting a target inside 50. We're one of the worst sides at that overall, despite Watts being one of the best in the comp. That's not a situation that would suggest moving up the ladder.  

It's not as if we haven't been at the threshold before and ended up back in the compost heap.
