End of year delistings

Recommended Posts

Trade In: Lever, Seedsman

Trade Out: Pick #10, Tyson (possibly to Carlton as part of a Gibbs trade), #46

Delist: Trengove, Hulett, Lumumba, McKenna, Spencer (FA), White (R)

Upgrade: J. Smith

Live picks: #28, #64

  • I would retain Frost and plan to play TMac forward.
  • I like Seedsman as a player and while he hasn’t been able to cement a spot at Adelaide, he has been emergency most weeks, which indicates he has played well at the lower level. He would potentially give us some outside run and skill.
  • We don’t want too many draft picks in a shallow draft.
  • I would look at picking up another veteran or delisted free agent, because it allows us to only offer a one year contract, whereas a new draftee gets two years.
  • I would look at Scott Thompson (NM) if we don’t get Lever.
  • I would let Spencer go and prepare to ruck with Pedersen, TMac, Watts etc or King if he develops if Gawn gets injured again.
  • Garland is contracted and I am not sure it makes much sense to break the contract from a cap perspective.

Best 22

Lever OMac Jetta

Hibberd Frost Hunt

Watts Jones Lewis

ANB Hogan Harmes

Petracca TMac Garlett

Gawn Oliver Viney

Int from: Salem Melksham Hannan Vince Brayshaw Pedersen Seedsman

Tony, I'm not convinced Seedsman is an upgrade in any way on Tyson.

I see the trades being firstly #10 and Tyson for Lever and secondly #46 for Seedsman.

The way I see it is our midfield is too slow and lacks kicking skills and Tyson is the major cause of the problem. Ideally I would love to add in a player like Issac Smith, Higgins or Sidebottom, but I can't see any of them being on the table.

#10 is enough for Lever, if he nominates us and we play hard enough

It might be enough (although I doubt it) and, I agree, we should negotiate fairly hard. But I would still trade Tyson regardless, even for a pick. We have enough ball winners in Oliver, Jones, Viney, Brayshaw and Petracca and we need some class on the outside.

As I said, I would like I. Smith, Higgins or Sidebottom, but their clubs won't be willing to trade cheaply and those players all seem fairly settled. I see Seedsman as a similar type of player, albeit much cheaper and having done less at AFL level.

Big interest from the Saints for Watts. Thought he was safe but an early 2nd round pick and another later pick are apparently going onto the table. Spencer is going and Vince to step down. Pederson is another who several clubs are showing high interest in, but surely he is safe? Looking for another seasoned midfielder but with good pace!

Their 'early second round pick' will be around pick 28-30, after AFL compensation picks are issued for FA's and Academy picks get used.

Pick 28-30 in a not too deep draft plus a later pick is absolute rubbish!

As in retire?

Didn't Pedo just re-sign?

Watts and our 2nd rounder for #9? Probably a steal.

Saints don't have a 2nd round pick - they have 7, 8, 43.  Maybe you can clarify with your source?

Would gladly trade him for the right offer.

Lets be real, hes been at the MFC for 9 seasons and had 1 very solid year (2016). The rest have been average to total garbage.

My understanding is that the following are out of contract in October  and unsigned at the moment.

·         Frost

·         Vince

·         Hulett

·         Kennedy

·         M. King

·         Trengove

·         Spencer

·         Vandenberg

Rookies

·         Filipovic

·         White

·         Maynard

Frost – Has trade value and seems to be on the outer after spending the last few matches at Casey. As a lot have speculated, may end up as part of the play for Lever. If we cannot get lever or there is no value for money to trade him, I would keep.

Vince – Would sign up for another season. Play him as required but give him a mentor role with a few of the young players on the list.

Hulett – is a tough one for me. Not seen him play but I do like his size. Borderline delist. If they can see an upside then persist but he has been on the list long enough for the coaching team to know what they have got.

Kennedy – Delist. If we cannot play him in any game this season after the injuries we had and the numbers he racked up at Casey then there is a problem.

M.King – Sign him up for 2 more

Trengove – Delist

Spencer – See what happens with his RFA status. We managed without him after his injury and do not see value in keeping him. We know exactly what he might bring to the team and we worked around it.

Vandenberg – another year to see how he comes back from his injury.

ROOKIES

Filipovic – sign on for another year for development

White – Delist. Has not seemed to develop this season.

Maynard – Elevate to main list.

Of the players whose contracts end at the end of next season, Kennedy-Harris and Kent might have some trade value. Johnstone and McKenna will have to develop and show something. The rookies contracted till the end of next year Keilty to develop further and seems to be tracking well. Tim Smith had an unlucky year with injuries and will need a good run at it next season. Garland? No idea what they may do with him. If it was up to me I would look at buying out his contract and delisting him.

Summary;

Delist – Kennedy, Trengove, White (R), Hulett (possible), Vandenberg (possible), Garland (Possible)

Elevate – Maynard, J Smith

Trade value – Frost, Kent, Kennedy-Harris (?) Bugg(?)

As a follow up to my original post I am happy that Frost has signed up for a couple more years and is off the trade table. I do think, however that it may mean that Hulett is a little less certain to stay on the list. I think it also means that we need to look a ,littlwe deeper into our list for trade possibilities if we are going to go seriously after Lever and/or Gaff. I could see the likes of Stretch, Neal-Bullen, Wagner, Harmes and Tyson being asked if they would be interested in looking elsewhere?

I do not see the likes of Salem, Watts and Garlett as untouchable but I feel we would need to get an excellent outcome in the trade to contemplate moving them on.

The rest of the list, to me either has no trade value or are untouchable.

As with all trades and delistings the Footy Department has to take into account the impact of the moves on the medium to long term attitude of the rest of the list. This is an important aspect of list management.

P28-30. Thats a rubbish deal.

Better they give us they're 1st pick, in the 2018 National Draft.

OK. We'll give them Watts & our Pick10.  for the Saints Pick 7 in 2017 NDraft, & the Saints 2nd Rnd pick in the 2018 NDraft.

Starting to sound like you're making scenarios up as you go along.  Do you actually have inside knowledge of Saints interest in Watts?

FWIW I wouldn't do that deal.  I expect we're going to trade our 1st rounder and I don't think it's going to make much difference to the deal whether it's 7 or 10 so it's really Watts for Saints 2018 2nd rounder which is a poor deal.

A deal I would do is Watts and our 2nd rounder for pick 8, then we could use 8 and 10 in deals for Lever and Gaff.

No of course not. I'm going on what the rumours are suggesting. Where there's smoke there's fire.  That doesn't mean things will happen, but you can betcha they are real & talks are happening.

OK, thanks for that.  I mistakenly thought it was you who started the rumour on here but it was @Still Waiting who hasn't come back and explained how the Saints give us an "early 2nd round pick" that they don't have. Cheers!

Don't know about talk of the picks, but i'm sure that talks would be going ahead with many teams, & most rumours are based in at least a little bit of truth.

Just because they don't often come off, does not mean that the people in question  are not in discussions.

And also we have Journo's, & player agents using the forums to deliberately spread rumours for an agenda, to spread a message, or dig for information via their posts.

I would never delist Bugg - he's exactly what we need. And I'd never trade Watts. Vince is still very handy.

I'd look to trade for Kent, Kennedy & Harmes. You'd get something for Harmes and Kent anyway.

I think our team needs more training, determination and spirit. Then we will be kings again.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm
