Why don't the cats just offer up the next 5 years of first round picks for dusty? Surely the AFL can postpone a little longer?

I think you are being generous by calling it a "formula". I don't think there is much method to the madness.

It's interesting seeing the contrasting list development strategies between us and Port. They identify what they can pick up for free and work their game plan around that.We identify players that can play a set role for us and are willing to pay anything for them. Going to be interesting watching both teams through 2018.

big difference btw the two sides is the relative experience / age of the lists

port have a plethora of players aged 27-31 at the start of next season; if they're going to win a premiership, it should be in the next three to four years

we're more building with youth still - players aged 20-25 dominate our 'core players'

Forgive my ignorance, but when the AFL give out the compo picks, does that not take away from another club / mess with the pick order? Didn't someone 'own' pick 19?

Brisbane had 19 before the Motlop deal.

Yep, now they have pick 20. We originally had pick 27 but it is now pick 29 after compo selections for Motlop & Rockliff.  It wouldn't bother me if they got rid of compensation picks when you lose a free agent

But the Cats said they wouldn't part with 34, why would they part with 19? Now they will offer 34 to the Suns.

They’ve probably been given 19 on the basis it’s on traded for Ablett.  This will be to help GCS.

Suns have stated from the start that they don't want picks, but a player instead.  They may have to relent in the end but I don't see it helping them get GAJ back to Geelong.

Pick 19 for Motlop is a joke

Jeelong will be celebrating tonight

Jack Watts is of similiar worth, and we won’t get anywhere near 19 if a deal does get done.

Jeelong, once again get the armchair ride for what they want.

I am starting to REALLY hate them now, rather than just hating them...!

Getting pick 19 for Motlop is deranged. Hocking well thats typical. He is probably the softest player in the AFL.

Every club pays the price for one compo pick. That's what's so sh!t about the system

Vogon, are you suggesting a conspiracy to corrupt the game?

They aren’t getting a player from Geelong of value. 19 might get them that player.

And how is the salary of Gary paid in advance then recouped, if they don't get a Cat's player who has part of his salary paid by the Cats?

They are my most hated AFL club south of Werribee.

Front loading ie bringing forward future contracted payments to current year is not unusual. It is complicating return of Ablett to Geelong as he was front loaded $300,000 this year. Suns, quite reasonably, have said they want a Geelong contracted player  to be traded for Ablett so Cats can pay the first $300,000 of that player's 2018 contract.

In the end  I suspect AFL will want Ablett to return to Cats so a deal will be done for a draft pick.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
