Yes Bluey had a great career WJ- and didn't seem too damaged by the Des Healey crash. I loved the fact that he could play both wing, with Brian Dixon on the other, as well as roving/forward pocket swapping with Ian Ridley. Those were great days.

 

Bluey was tough, skilled, keen and had a real go.

    I can understand the cash side of it, but why would you want to go to Essendrug at the minute with spot fires popping up everywhere?

    He would be transferring to a club with the equal amount of complete hopelessness as the club he's come from.

    They were rubbish this year and haven't they already lost about 4 players?

    There will be a few others on this site around the same age as me. I was born in 1950 and saw my first game around 1955-56. Dad pointed out Ivor Warne Smith and the Cordner brothers. I think it was a week or two later I wanted to go to the footy again but Dad (Jack) said no- so I decided to drive there myself- not that I had any idea of how to drive let alone how to navigate to the MCG from Ashburton!! Ha Ha !

    I only succeeded in rolling Dads car down the driveway and smashing the front headlight on his car--not a Happy Jack!

    Despite the harshness of the last 56 years, I lived through the great era and am so grateful for the memories that provided. I would dearly love another premiership or even a great era again-but if it doesn't happen I will always have those great memories to carry with me. :)

    Lucifers Hero explained this in another thread. 

    Top picks ( first round mainly) are diluted by NGA picks.  e.g Bulldogs will nominate Ugle-Hagen, but have to use points from their lower round picks.  The picks for other clubs are further being diluted by FA compensation picks being slotted in.  i.e Essendon has already got pick 7...everyone below that has been moved down 1 already.

    So say starting with pick 9 in an uncompromised draft, you could finish with a player who would ordinarily be pick 15! ( example only)

    However, a pick in the 30's or 40's will become more valuable because clubs like the Bulldogs will have to use their 2nd and 3rd round picks to get the points necessary for the NGA players they want i.e pick 45 may become pick 38.  ( example only)

    At the end of the day, first round picks are not something we need to be seeking to trade into this year.

    Yeah, I noticed the double grabs as well. Hard to maintain balance with Doull, Southby and Perovic rolling onto you.

    Brown will play for Melbourne for the next few years.  I'm pleased without being ecstatic.  BUT I'm not ''underwhelmed'' by this bloke, as some seem to be.  In 3 years - 2017-2019 - he kicked the MOST goals in the AFL (188 frigging goals), which is no mean feat.  And he hardly had the best midfield slotting it down his throat.

    I watched every one of his 65 goals from 2019 and two thirds did NOT come from leads.  They were a combination of frees, contested marks, tackles, ground balls, and general play.  And plenty of the goals from ''leads'' were not lace-out.  In fact, only a few were.  Plenty were just getting separation with smart leads and speed.

    Both Brown and Weideman cover a lot of territory.  It's great that Weideman will get the second tall.  Jackson will relieve ruck, play a bit on-ball, occasionally push deep as well as resting on the bench.  

    It's a good get for the MFC.

    It is a total myth, that he needs the midfield to kick it straight on his chest on a lead, north never had a midfield full of elite kicks in those years.

    Has a lot to do with his poor year.  It was a hard enough year already and he had a family tragedy on top of it and the Kangaroos are a rabble.

    It is a huge get for us.  Pumped!

     He's only good kicking for goal. I closed my eyes tighter than when his brothers kicking out from defense. Your right about him playing back there, he can for a fill in but we just don't want him kicking it.

    Who cares how he gets them, staging, double grabs, spoon feed by the umps... does he kick fing goals?! Does he have the potential to kick more goals than our current fwds and help us win games/finals?

    $5, I’d like to take that pony for a loooong ride.

    BREAKING NEWS: Christian Salems haircuts in the hub was the secret to recruiting Ben Brown. Absolute masterstroke Dees. Has taken a haircut in his salary to come over.

    Staggered that anyone could question the acquisition of a former Coleman medalist for the potential exchange of a second round pick.

    Because Templeton was banged up and about32 when we lured him.

    Brownie is  only 27/28 and Burgo has tested him I believe for fitness and all the medics are satisfied he has potentially4/5 years ahead.

    I think Templeton retired at 28-29, we got him when he was 26 but with banged up knees

    Sorry George then why is there a thought that we may Conjure up pick 9 out of Preuss and our second rounder no23?

    I thought 23 would be fir Brownie for Norrh!

    No one has done that (as Brown has never won the Coleman). People have questioned the recruitment of Brown who kicked 8 goals in 9 games this season and takes considerable salary cap space.

    As long as we are offloading McDonald I am happy enough with a deal for a second rounder.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
