Even if all Brown does is take away the best defender allowing Weideman and Jackson to develop as second and third talls, it would be a good get. McDonald sadly doesn’t commend a good defender anymore.

Brown will, at worse, bring ball to ground giving Pickett and hopefully another small forward that we find somewhere, more opportunities. At best he kicks 30-50 goals and makes us a potent forwardline again. Something we’ve lacked since McDonald was in form.

Weideman is going to be a much better player in 2021 with Brown next to him. It's still a no brainer.

Why would North pay some of his contract when he is out of contract. That sort of deal only happens when you trade a player in contract. Ie if we traded Tmac

My understanding is that he was under contract. If this is not the case you would be right

Yeah, but gets pushed off the ball quite easily . . .

He plays for free kicks, throws his arms around and flops better than a lot of soccer players.

Provided we get him. He hasn’t said yes yet.

We have won 3 times as many flags as North, he wont be able to ignore that kind of success.

Lock him in.

Hearing his medical looks good so physically shouldn’t be any reason he can’t get back to his best.

it sounds like a good deal of his challenges this year were related to off field tensions at NM and family tragedy.

Defend all you like but the fact is we basically pay the same salary cap as everyone else and continually miss the finals and never achieve success. So the FGeelongs, Richmonds and all the others who have tasted success are better list managers than us. Thats all there is too it. Results. Not interested in your, but he came third in the brownlow type arguments.

If running a football club only involved list management, you might have a point. Every element of a footy club - from commercial sponsorship, resources and infrastructure, marketing and communications through to the football department and players all have an influence on success.

You could hand us the 22 best football players in the land but it will mean very little if they're not supported by all of those other functions.

Good clubs do more than one thing right.

I find it incredible that so many people don't understand this.

Good news. Hopefully we didn't use the same medicos that checked out KK ?

North offered 3 years with a 4th yr option @ $850k. And he knocked it back. Certainly has a high opinion of himself.

Rejecting that offer is in the territory of Don Trump retardness.

He should be suing his manager, his parents, literally anyone and everyone - even himself.

That said, I hope he comes to the Dees.

Given what was to come he probably is better off out of North albeit on less $$.

Bloody hell I'm excited hearing this.

We literally have a 'ton' of small/mediums with talents.

I am struggling to name one small That can play forward with reliable talent. Kossie - perhaps - but that is still potential, think he only kicked one genuine roving goal last year (FWIW I think his long term is in the middle ala Sonny Walters).

You get Brown to clunk it (not to bring the ball to ground) and, as you say, send them through the middle from wherever he is.

Am I missing something,

Key forwards are in the team to mark the ball not bring it to ground, that's the role of a key back!!!

Plays as a medium marking forward. Doesn’t  pressure opposition when he doesn’t have the ball, doesn’t offer much when the ball is on the deck.

Yeah, you kind of are missing something.

There is an understanding in the current game that because of the team defensive systems being so strong, that it's not possible to mark it every time. Often it's 3 on one, 3 on 3 ,5 on 3 in the defensive favour. Due to the lack of space and time, it's rare you get a one on one consistently... I presume you have seen that in recent years.

So, if this is all true, then bringing the ball to ground in favour of your other forwards is a skill.

Lets offer 3 years at 650K, a haircut and Guarantee at least 20 free kicks for flopping. Lock it in!

2021 flag, Coleman with 5 goals vs 18th for 3 years.

we can pay one guy $650 to kick 50+ goals a year, or we can pay two guys $700k+ who kick 40 goals between them. No brainer go after him.

Yes, you are.

Their first goal is to not be out marked.  If they're constantly being out pointed by opposition defenders then your team is in a world of hurt.  Scoring chains often start from defence.

It's hard to retain the ball in your forward 50, build pressure and create forward 50 re-entries if your key forward is being out marked.  Not to mention the opportunities that aren't being created for your smalls.

How many contested marks do you think key forwards take on average per game ?

Jury Maybe  still out for very small sample size but I think Bayley when developed and coached properly will be a star

And he has done those 2 defensive jobs well so far Msybe if he had to handle a pacy opponent that's would test him out,

Lets see he has plenty of tricks and will learn more as he develops,

Agreed...an extremely high footy IQ  & you can’t teach that. If he had kicked even half of his missed goals this would be an entirely different thread. He took Maynard out of the game against the Pies & played a brilliant defensive role against Nick Haynes who I thought was one of GWS best players this year.

I think the only thing that will stop him coming across is a bigger money offer from the Bummers.

They have an extra 1.3M to spend with Saad, Daniher and Fantasia going.

Especially If they miss out on Macrae

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
