when you look at the years mentioned with the exception of last year we could not win a game anywhere. That chart means nothing. Good teams win anywhere bad teams lose most of the time irrespective of the location. Why did we lose at Ethiad for a decade? Because we had the worst team in the league. 

Even so, a lot of those losses were way over the odds, even by our lowly standards pre Roos days.

Fancy losing to a highly mediocre North of 2013 by 122 points and barely managing 25 points for the entire game!

Or losing to Essendon who's season was dead and buried the week before by the 4-9 Saints by 110 points and Hird was a dead coach walking that week.

Or let's flash back to last year when we were a half ok side. We played the Saints after Darwin at Etihad and conceded 7 goals in a row either side of half time and also the final 5 goals of the game.

We're as flat as pancakes after Darwin and my list of losses perfectly illustrates our struggles IMO.

2010 - BEFORE Darwin West Coast 29 point loss (Carlton 41 points loss - actually it was a 54 point loss to Geelong)

2011 - BEFORE Darwin Western Bulldogs 64 point loss (Hawthorn 54 point loss)

2012 - BEFORE Darwin Fremantle 34 point loss (North 54 point loss)

2013 - BEFORE Darwin Geelong 68 point loss (North 122 point loss (LOL!))

2014 - BEFORE Darwin Western Bulldogs 6 point loss (Geelong 66 point loss)

2015 - BEFORE Darwin Geelong 24 point loss (Essendon 9 point loss (after Essendon copped a 110 point loss the week before amidst the Hird crisis))

2016  - BEFORE Darwin Adelaide 22 point loss (St Kilda 36 point loss (completely ran out of gas in the last qtr))...

PS the fact we played Geelong during their golden era three times after Darwin hurt as well...

I was already shocked and disappointed when our club hierarchy tried to make out we were getting out and conducting training sessions in Alice Springs in late May. That was somewhat understandable - Alice Springs is very much a backwater and has poor recovery facilities.  So getting Virgin Airlines to agree to a late night Saturday return flight to Melbourne can be viewed as highly practical ... even clever.

But this is different.

We are now in the middle of winter and have already seen a spate of soft-tissue injuries. And Darwin is not a backwater - it has genuinely good facilities and a sporting precinct.

It is a perfect place for our players to get away and put in a solid week of preparation without having to don tights and fear sprinting full pelt. It could have been a godsend for the likes of Nathan Jones, Wattsy, Salem and Dom to get some decent speed sessions in as they attempt to overcome their injuries. But more importantly it was a rare chance for someone like Jack Trengove, who is deemed to be too slow, to get in some serious sprint work - without having to fear whether they had sufficently warmed up enough bracing Melbourne's cold.

It was also the chance for our players to really embrace the NT community - to conduct special clinics with the talented locals and really spruik our brand in the region.

To me, we have come a really long way under Jacko.

But we continue to pay NT lip service and just take the money and run.

Are we really that poor still that we cannot afford to spend a week's accom in Darwin on our team?

Or is there something more sinister at brew - we are about to ditch the NT program outright?

Gawn mentioned on RSN this morning that they are trying to keep the same routine for all interstate trips.

Actually what is interesting here is Adelaide's view on the match.

I assume they are a willing participant and are being paid by the NT government to show up.

Slightly surprising as they are a very wealthy club and don't need the angst of playing in tropical conditions in a tight year.

On a radio interview Peter Gordon said he would want $1M for the Dogs to participate in China (over and above expenses) so that is the value he put on the home game.

The other question is what crowd would we have got in Melbourne and how much would we have made.

Good teams win on the road, and win after they've been on the road... whining about the NT windfall, a windfall that has basically generated our entire profit for the past three years is not only defeatist, but ungracious.

And if this NT deal costs us a top 4 spot with a flat performance in our 8 point game against Port, won't it have taken away (edit) Fri/Sat night home semi final at the MCG profits or Fri/Sat Night Home Preliminary Final profits ? How much would that cut into the NT deal?

Yeah it could.

But without PJ and Darwin and the AFL's assistance would we be where we are.  And where we are IMO is pretty exciting.

Perhaps PJ could put some pressure on the AFL for the favorable fixturing of a Melbourne vs 18th from the year before match, for the week after every Darwin game?

Yeah it would...and that would sort out the financial side if we can squeeze it out of every member.  

But this year and next I believe we remain at the mercy of the AFL and need to deal with it. 

We suckled at the teat of the AFL and we knew that there would be a price to pay.  it's not ideal but it was a business decision that had a fair amount of merit.

When we have sixty thousand members next year we reap the benefits and instead of asking for charity can begin to make demands.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't dispute we were crap, but I cant pretend the conditions and travel didn't have any bearing on the team's performance. I remember reading how players would lose 4kgs and more after the game. We are an older, better and more experienced team in 2017, but I still anticipate a fair toll on the players after Saturday.

The travel/heat/fatigue factor would have been weighed up against bringing in Watts and Tyson this week.

 

2 x talented bodies to freshen the team up for the following weeks game, and if Viney gets his wish and makes it back also, we may be quite competitive against Port.

There can be NO reason, other than typical AFL bloody mindedness, that the Darwin game cannot be scheduled immediately before both teams have a bye.  No reason whatsoever, and I hope PJ pushes this for next year.
