It's a sign that at the right time we are doing the right things. 

That is why Nibbler will continue to get a game - he does the team things.  Other players might have been selfish and tried to be the hero. 

Nibbler followed the 'team first' rules.  The trust that gets from teammates cannot be overestimated.

Its amazing how quick some posters are to put down our middle of the road players.  This from TMc: “Some of the smalls like [Alex] Neal-Bullen is doing a great job down there and they’re putting me in the right spots...".  There is just so much we don't see that players and coaches value.  Anyone notice how Nibbler rarely blazes away at goal these days and even when inside 50 looks for a team mate in a better position.  I reckon he has quite a bit of 'footy smarts' about him.

This stuff is what would get his name on the board pretty early in selection meetings each week.

Interesting point and agree. But the thing is, under pressure sportspeople can lose their minds. That's why it was great that a young guy kept his head. Usually winning under pressure is more about you executing your plan and not letting the mind getting overwhelmed. Hopefully these acts are exactly the common sense thinking that Lewis teaches these young guys.

Nathan Williamson. AFL umpiring is not his go. Back to Western Australia for him. Perhaps he can umpire a game in Kalbarri next week for rural round. Then maybe get mauled by a rogue kangaroo on his way back to the car after the game. Not that we wish that on an umpire.

I watched it from the forward pocket. All credit for this goes to Lewis, I'd say that is exactly how it unfolded. ANB would've taken the shot otherwise. Must say I was amazed no Blues player went to Lewis,  he was 25m clear! 

Is there any way to find out umpire statistics per umpire?

 

Vince won't get dropped this week, he will be needed to tag Sloane.

Like our loss to Richmond, the two injuries went a very long way to helping us win.

Of course. Carlton were also fortunate to have a full team, our injury list is much more substantial than theirs. Plus we played an underdone Smith and Hogan coming back from 10 weeks off. The above gave Carlton a chance to start with. 

We played a younger team in age and games played than Carlton as well. According to the media outlets the young Carlton team for 'brave'.

It's interesting reading the disappointment on here at times at the consistency throughout a game - we forget, or at least dismiss the fact that a) numerous injuries, b) 3-4 players in have had significant lay offs, c)players such as hannan, trac etc rolled through the middle and at least nullified if not won significant contests. An ugly, disappointing at moments win shows so much grit - there has been so much learning through adversity this year that it will only serve ALL the players well for 2018 and beyond. I'm looking forward to 'hopefully' being a sustained finals contender for years to come....god knows I'm thirsty for it.

I vehemently disagree with this - and I understand where you are coming from to say this. Personally, nothing develops match fitness like playing matches... I'd be happy to wear a couple of poor ones for Gawn, Smith and Hogan as they reestablish their mojo.

and lets not talk about 'confidence players' - much like Goodwin's presser and culture - its misunderstood by the wider world....

Why? Because for the average footballer's IQ, it is genius.

I ask the same question about the 30 sec rule. Waste an unlimited time by running as far back as you can in 30 seconds and then walk in as slowly as you can for 2 minutes.  More evidence that the AFL rules are written by amateurs.

It wasn't Malthouse.

There are two things that we really need to address that are holding this team back:

1. Our decision making from marks is still so bad, our play on at all costs strategy comes undone too often. The perfect example yesterday was Hibberd played on without looking and Silvangi was standing two metres away from him (it probably should have been a 50 metre penalty but that's beside the point).  As a result, Hibberb went from having a "free kick" with no pressure to kicking under pressure unnecessarily. The other problem (as I have mentioned many times) is we don't get back behind the mark quickly enough.  Melksham had the ball just outside our attacking 50 metre line but didn't bother to get back behind the mark quickly. As a result, he kicked the ball into the man on the mark and a guaranteed forward entry became an attacking play for Carlton.
2. Our tackling has regressed badly. The problem for me is we over commit to the tackle allowing teams to just slightly step to the side and get around us with ease. Sometimes the best thing to do is just hold off for half a second, wait for the player with the ball to move then go in for the tackle. On the other side, Hannan and Jetta are the two players who are excellent avoiding tackles because they are so good at the little shimmy and shake in close. Straight line players such as Hunt and Frost rely on their pace (which is great) but they are very predictable in their movements meaning that they too often get caught unnecessarily.

Looking at the repla last night, I couldn't believe that Carlton defenders left Lewis so loose, they only have them selves to blame.

It was also a handy goal from Lewis in the end as well.  Helped keep our % up around the 110% mark.  With the comp so tight at the moment, having good percentage is as good as winning another game.

I thought were Carlton were the better side for the most part, and they clearly had the best 3-4 individual players on the ground but, and full credit to the playing group, we just had more composure at the key moments and found a way to get the job done. Last year we lost in a similar game by 4 goals, so mentally at least we are greatly improved from last year. With half a dozen top players to come back, we can do some damage if we slip into the top six.

THE GOOD

Tom McDonald - absolute star. Get a long term contract in front of him now.

Petracca - last week he had a couple of moments of brilliance. This week he just willed himself in to the game. 

Frost & Jetta - brilliant at the back, particularly given the lack of support they received from those around them.

Wagner - much improved on last week.

Oliver - the only other midfielder of note.

THE BAD

Kent - complete liability. Weak at the ball, weak at the contest, still can't kick simple goals. Just go away.

Stretch - lacks composure under pressure and has no thirst for the contest. Has regressed badly from last year.

Lewis - less fumbly this week, but constantly puts teammates under pressure by not taking the hit.

Melksham - remains a liability under pressure, although has some class with time & space.

THE UGLY

The one that I am surprised has never been tried is when a player is kicking for goal from around 50m - defenders could allow themselves to be used as a stepladder so that a teamate can get a touch on the ball

Our two Captains...Viney & Jones then Tyson..Watts..Salem..Brayshaw (yes I will include Brayshaw as he is in our best 22 every day of the week) Gawn after 9 weeks out..Hogan after 7 weeks out & Smith after 13 weeks out.....yes the team we beat was in bottom four but in a season where bottom four beats top teams every week ...we won ...don't care what it looked like or how we did it...we won.   This is one week where criticism is not warranted ...I am just so "god dam" proud !!!!
