I wonder if demonland traffic is higher this year? Is the record still draft day two years ago?

Trenners has limitations as a footballer,  but so does everyone else running around at Casey. Jones' replacement should be based on form, Trenners has been consistent in the 2s.

Trenners has earned a call up regardless of his limitations.

It's now or never for Trenners. We shall see what happens.

Give the kid a run, he bloody deserves it.

I was hoping we were over this sort of stuff.

We are now playing for our first finals spot in over a decade, and people want to play possibly the slowest midfielder to play the game in the past 30 years, on the most open ground in the country, because "he bloody deserves it"?

Love the bloke for what he has been through, but I'm over sentiment when it comes to watching the Red & Blue in September.

No, just No

It's not sentiment. His form in the VFL warrants a run in the AFL.

Jones is the only definite out at this stage and we know Gawn is coming in. If there's any other outs then I'm suggesting Trenners should come in.

Just on Subiaco, what makes it the most 'open' ground?

With Jones out, it does leave a hole in the onfield  leadership. I don't feel Viney is as yet mature enough to provide that by himself, particularly when we need cool heads in a crisis. Everything you hear about Tenners is he has outstanding leadership abilities, and it will be really up to the likes of Lewis, Vince, Watts and Max together with Viney and hopefully Tenners to step up in that direction. It is not as if Jones is all that nippy himself. It his intensity at the ball which is elite, and in that Tenners could almost match him.

Having Max return would negate any need for extra leadership support for Viney.

His form might be solid, but he is soooooo slooooow

Its not the ground to play him on. His strength is his marking, which I think means he is more a replacement for an injured Petracca etc, across half forward.

As a mid, he will be a massive liability defensively, as he cannot catch anyone once the ball is turned over.

If Watts doesn't get through training on Thursday he won't play, who's the second player you'd bring in to replace him?

To be honest mate, almost anyone on the list except Trenners.

Gawn in, Pedders to play Watts role in rotation with T-Mac

Wouldnt be surprised to see K-Harris, even though I'm not a fan.

Maybe someone can give us some info on Maynard?  can he run?  Would certainly lose nothing in the hardness department with N. Jones

Or possibly Stretch to run run run, in the wide open spaces?

Assuming someone other than Jones is an out, Trengove would have to be considered based upon his consistent form at Casey, provided he is played as an inside mid, especially in the centre square.

Whilst there is no doubt he could play a stopping/tagging role on Mitchell off half back, Trenners would be better in the centre square when Priddis is there - good as Priddis undoubtedly is, I doubt that he would be able to 'burn off' Trengrove in the unlikely event that they were somehow in a foot race.

Trengrove has always had good vision, footy smarts, very neat skills (both by hand & foot), and knows how to lay tackles that stick - (just ask Dangerfield).

or Priddis who gets slower by the week.

It'd be a truly memorable Dees moment if Trenners come in and shows he is still AFL quality. Imagine the reception he'd get next Friday night at the G!

So you reckon he could not catch Sam Mitchell or Matt Priddis?

His draft camp 20 metre time was 3 seconds so not quick but not treacle slow if he can get back to that.

Shaking my head in disbelief that anyone would take the trouble to type this sentence.

His "draft camp 20 metre time"? The one he did in 2009?

It was not too long ago that a lot on here said that Pedersen was not worth a spot because, not only was he not best 22, he was a 'spud'.  I think that school of thought (on both counts) has now been put to bed.  IMO Trengove deserves a run.  He is brave, skilfull, strong overhead, a good decision maker and a reliable kick at goal.  He is also smart.  He may very well follow Pedo's lead and surprise a few.

JKH has not been tried in the midfield at AFL level, hes only been used out of position as a forward, which he is not.

Hes been dominating in the midfield for Casey, and thats where he should be played at AFL level when he gets another chance.

Dont think it will be this week though, as unless Watts or someone doesnt get up, it will likely just be Gawn for Jones.

You are right there but then again they play Trenners off the half back line.

I think they play JKH in the mid field so he can find the ball... something he does not do at AFL level

Wonderful to see the passionate discussions given that they are based on optimism rather than the usual ......

You're very vocal on him being left out, aren't you PF?

He'll be a popular choice, demons fans will love seeing him, and love when he gets touches as he's such a superb user and decision maker.

I reckon how it'll play out, he'll have a huge first half, then as the game wears on he'll be shown up for his pace... and by the end of the week people will grudgingly accept he's done and you'll claim bragging rights.

With all that considered? I still want them to pick him.

Yeah well that is a losing mentality, We need players that can sustain 4 quarters not petter out when the game is there to be won.By your own admission given scenarios he may run outa legs!?  At this stage of the season with potential finals in offering this is no time for sentimental Bulltish! Best team on park to win the game! This means someone like Stretch has to play! Sorry!

Would be very surprised if he ever plays again. Consistent form at VFL level but question whether he's up to AFL standard. His pace is understated in a slower VFL competition. I just don't think he translates well to AFL anymore.

Who cares? He had his moment...I think against Richmond last year? Or was it Collingwood?

We're well beyond good news stories now. He came in last year when we were desperate and had too many untried and under performing VFL youngsters.  He's 3rd or 4th string at best. If he's best 22 in any scenario, then our midfield is VERY thin. It's a blessing in disguise he's not getting a game. We simply don't want to be in that situation. Harsh and tough reality.

We now need inside mid skills.

Cant for my life seeJKH being that player in big game guise. Hes a small fwd..just is. Not our best either...another is.

He could be something...if finds that 'x' he once had.

Bit of a shame.

Need a cool calm thinker for the trip West ?

Yes it is certainly getting harder. I think they should seriously consider Tenners as a replacement for jones. On the website, they confirm Jones 4-6 weeks, and recovering Hunt, Watts and Jetta, all of whom they expect to be fit.

The news has certainly made Saturday that much harder, and leadership will be critical. So for me, I'd have the changes:

In:  Gawn Trengove

Out: Jones.  Neal-Bullen

Not sure if serious. The only reason ANB would be dropped this week is if his leg fell off on the way to training.

Can someone please point to the game (round&year)  / chance he has been given (now fully fit) where this has been demonstrated. I keep hearing this but am struggling to recall where the EVIDENCE for this is. If it is there, I will take heed, but as far as I understand he has not had the AFL game (and I think he should get 2/3 games) for a proper call to be made.

It is a huge ask though. The guy hasn't played top level in over a year, this is not a Round 22-23 send off. This is an interstate game with top 4 as the incentive.

Yeah. I thought you'd make that reaction.

Firstly. My post isn't sentimental. Others might be, mine isn't. I'm concerned that just because we're doing well winning the hard ball, people think it'll come easily without Jones. I want to see a mature body in there that knows about extraction. He's no Jones, but then no one is. Yes, Olly, Tyson and Viney have been superb in there... and likely ANB will relish the opportunity to take over Jones' workload. But I don't trust ANB that much yet. Trengove might not be quick, but he does the in close stuff well, and has done it all year at VFL level.

Secondly. Stretch doesn't "have to play" whatever that means. He didn't set the world on fire earlier in the year. And hasn't done much since he went back. He's a tiny whippet-type player. If you want that, then get JKH who's laying tackles and getting heaps of the ball. And from what we can see, is taking on his coach's instructions about working defensively.

Thirdly. I'm not worried about Trengove playing 4 quarters. I'm worried about the uncontested game that West Coast can click into with runners and distributors like Gaff, Shuey, Hurn, Sheed, Yeo, McGovern, Jetta, Cripps, Shepherd, Lecras. Like it or not, our skills aren't as good as some sides... and I think West Coast can be lethal. I'm not concerned that Jack can't play out a game. I just worry that they'll man him up with someone that can run off him when we kick behinds, or turn it over.

They've been incredibly soft this year, and then out of nowhere last week smacked the Cats with brutal inside work that it seemed they'd forgotten. Priddis won a Brownlow, Sheed has broken out, Mitchell is a classic clearance gun, Shuey is an out and out star inside and outside. I see this as being closer to the Pies game. Which means we'll NEED the inside work of Trengove more than what anyone else we have left has offered.

Seems to me everyone's in one camp or another. One group say Gawn in Jones out. Some of us want to maintain list structure... So it's a mid. Preferably a Jones-clone. Failing that... someone that approximates a Jones-style game. Stretch doesn't. JKH doesn't either. Braysh is hurt. Kent's not a midfielder. Johnstone's not ready. Trengove isn't a sentimental choice... at least not for me. I think he's the best man for the job. Certainly for the 4-6 week job. He's on the list for a reason. And this is it.

If Trengove plays AFL (which he deserves on form) and fails, we get resolution that a former captain is not up to it. If any other player plays and doesn't perform, they'll still have another chance. I reckon the closure we'll get if Trengove gets a chance and fails is worth the risk that he comes in and doesn't perform.

Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
