WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BALIC

I wonder if this acquisition would make someone like Dom Tyson nervous about keeping his spot??

Time will tell.

Dom gets a lot of the ball but seems to waste it a lot

Looks like we don't rate this years draft, won't have any picks 10 and 27 for lever, and don't worry about Adelaide crying and asking for more, it will get it done, everyone rates next years draft,  got to keep all of next years picks,

I think Dom Tyson is in for a massive year next year ,and the more quality outside players we have the more effective his disposal in tight will become

And he has a hell of a lot of friends too.

Must be addressed in the off season for the 10 year in a row!!

And Aidan "pig dog" Riley!

Both supposed to set the game alight.

But didn't!

Balic has talent. But has always had off field concerns. I believe this is why he slid in the draft.

If he can sort out his off field stuff I think he’s got the talent to play a role in our side

Is Balic the kid with bad anxiety issues? My mother has those and isn't nice to watch, hope he gets well if it is him.

I agree, its hard to get excited about someone who has had opportunities elsewhere but unable to deliver. Hopefully it will be a pack of chips trade if we do get him.

Really? Supposed to set the game alight? What rubbish. They were picked up because they were not getting a run at their current club and we thought we could get them cheap with the chance they might develop into something.

Balic is the same. It doesnt mean the result will be.

Harley not a very Melbourne name mind you.

Would you prefer Yamaha or Suzuki?

People keep referring to his off field issues.

Well what are they? Cant be too bad if we are recruiting him

severe case of anxiety and homesickness if you believe the rumours

I find it difficult to believe he could be worse than having Kennedy on our list.

Worth a try for a fourth round cost IMO.

Bit like comparing the flu with gastro. Neither is terribly appealing od!

I wonder if he’ll be part of the mooted Hogan to Freo (2017 trade period edition) deal...

I think he will be a starter. He has a bit more class than many on the fringe. He was a good ball user as a junior. We need good ball users. I actually think Balic will be a steal. He is very capable. He has class and moves well. Providing he completes a pre-season I expect he will play over 15 games next year.

It's just another opinion, but he does watch a lot of junior footy.

Here's Knightmare's 2015 top 23 power rankings followed by a brief bio of Balic.

-- Top five on list quality --

1. Jacob Hopper (NSW - GWS ACADEMY - MID)

2. Clayton Oliver (VIC – MID)

3. Jacob Weitering (VIC – KPD)

4. Callum Mills (NSW - SYDNEY ACADEMY – MID)

-- Top ten on list quality --

5. Ben Keays (QLD – BRISBANE ACADEMY – MID/FWD)

6. Matthew Kennedy (NSW - GWS ACADEMY – MID/FWD)

7. Joshua Schache (VIC – KPF)

-- Projected best 22 players --

8. Eric Hipwood (QLD – BRISBANE ACADEMY - KPP)

9. Aaron Francis (SA – UTIL)

10. Mitchell Hibberd (TAS – DEF/MID)

11. Kieran Collins (VIC – KPD)

12. Wayne Milera (SA –FWD/MID)

13. Luke Partington (SA – MID/FWD)

14. Darcy Parish (VIC – UTIL)

15. Ryan Clarke (VIC – MID/FWD)

16. Ryan Burton (SA – FWD)

17. Harley Balic (VIC – MID/FWD)

18. Thomas Cole (VIC – UTIL)

19. Rhys Mathieson (VIC – MID/FWD)

20. Harry Himmelberg (NSW – GWS ACADEMY – KPF)

21. Kieran Lovell (TAS – MID)

22.Jade Gresham (VIC – MID)

23. Brayden Fiorini (VIC – MID)

17. Harley Balic (VIC – MID/FWD)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 05/01/1997
Recruited from: Sandringham Dragons
Reminds me of: Poor man’s Jackson Macrae
Brief bio: Balic has some tricks and plays with that basketballer several other recent draftees have. Balic stands out most with his decision making ability and vision with ball in hand. He consistently chooses the right option and often finds some really damaging targets. In terms of execution while he has the vision and decision making ability by hand and foot it can be a mixed bag as sometimes he will hit his targets, and other times miss. Similarly finishing from set shots and field kicks at goal further improvement is required as he lacks consistency in front of goal. He is also more of a short-medium distance kicker as someone with only average penetration. A further strength of Balic’s is his strength of marking overhead with his leaping ability making him a threat in the air which gives him potential to play forward of centre. Athletically Balic is good overall. He is not a linebreaking threat but moves well, has strong endurance and excellent leaping ability. As a contested ball winner Balic at this stage is not a factor as someone who is a receiver at this point.

Different players. Kennedy may have made it had we not had Viney and Oliver come on as well as they have. Early last year Kennedy was actually up to AFL level, and was playing good football. Balic is a different player to Kennedy. Balic has more tools, and has a frame more suited to AFL football (IMO). He will need to hone his strengths though, because he isn't going to find the ball as much as someone like Kennedy, so when Balic does get the ball he is going to need to do something with it. I wanted us to draft Balic the year Freo took him. I thought they got a steal, so I'd be happy to land him.

Not too bad an effort on his speculative rankings, and an accurate assessment of Balic from the brief footage I've seen. An outside link-man for our run n' gun game-plan. Not super-quick, but as mentioned before (and it's pie-in-the-sky) I'm hoping he's the one who will have the nous to know exactly where to be for an Oliver receive.

Insane amount of upside and we are not giving the farm for him. Could be best 18 or could be delisted in 3 years. Don’t worry about it, let’s just see what he does.

Don't know much about this young fella, hope it works out for all , but a couple of bells are ringing. We only need A graders now and we can be a little 'Sandringham Centric ' at times.

To be fair to Balic, he (and his fellow youth players at the FFC) didn't get a look in to the senior side until the Dockers got thrashed in their first two games of the year. Lyon has his system and preferred players, and was loath to mix it up even after their 2016 season.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
