The Jackson Trengove Thread

Last year we targetted Michael Hurley (27 y.o, 193 cm, 92 kg) as a KPD. This year the names of Jake Lever (21 y.o, 195 cm, 93 kg) and Steven May (25 y.o, 193 cm, 102 kg) have been thrown into the works.

Jackson Trengove (26 y.o, 197 cm, 97 kg) of Port Adelaide is out of contract at the end of this year and is a more than capable key defender. I rate him higher than May, and at this point, Lever is only a prospect (still targetable for the long term).

What are your thoughts?

I rate may and lever both above him but it ultimately comes down to how the club views oscars development. Some big forwards have gotten hold of him but he's done a decent job at times as well so it's just about the faith they have in him

Quality player, but i don't think he plays his best football as a defender; he's blossomed the last two years as a follower.

I doubt he'll leave Port as he had every chance to a few years back when they were at their absolute worst and he didn't take it.  If they've managed their cap, he'll stay.

Adelaide however haven't managed their cap and May could leave for a better chance of success; therein lies our two best opportunities.

I believe he is a restricted free agent. Id be happy for melb to go after him at a cost of salary cap space only and use him in the tall forward/second ruck roll and then trade for a Lever. Add Trengove forward and Lever back and your starting to fill the gaps on our list.

makes sense. i like the idea of a (genuinely) tall utility player who can play kpf, kpb and ruck relief. certainly fills a known gap in our lineup.

Any of the three would fill a great need.

On Lever, he is without a doubt more than "only a prospect".

You're really underselling him if that's what you believe.

Just go all out on Lever. Offer overs if need be. We need Lever in the long term. Plenty of spuds to cut to fit in serious players.

I think Trengove would be a very sensible target. He adds a capable defender who can spell the ruckman.

If the team had a player like him on the ground this year it's likely at least one of the Geelong and Richmond games would've been a win.

The word from Lever is he's waiting for the CBA to be ratified. (Or he's using that to stall)

Nothing like a completely needless whack at a player on our list. There's about 30 players on our list that Lever is an upgrade on - why single out one of them?

I agree he was average as a key defender, but has played well since moving into rotating ruck/floating midfield. Similar to Westhoff, struggled as a key forward but has been good since moving into a floating midfield role and chipping in with ruck work. As key defenders, May is better and Lever is already decent and improving so would be the best long term option. I don't think Trengove suits us as there are better options out there if those guys are available.

The only reason why Garland is still on our list is because of the extremely generous 3 year deal he signed. If he had been OOC for any of the past 2 years, he would have been de-listed.

And it's not a whack Nasher. It just a simple observation (and an accurate one at that) that Garland is simply no longer good enough to maintain a place on our list. I know for a fact he's a good bloke and a great club man, but from a football point of view, he no longer is.

Sorry if that offends you Nasher, but the simple truth is, if we are to improve as a football team, the dead wood needs to be cut away. Garland (prior to his unfortunate ACL) has been around that area for a few years now.

I've said before that I think he'd fit in really well with the way we play our defense, giving he's quiet mobile and probably a bit quicker than a first glace would suggest. He also has the advantage of being a genuine  option in the ruck.

One of the bigger advantages is that he wouldn't cost us any draft picks or trades. There was some talk that while he has been loyal to Port in the past, they might actually encourage him to take up free agency as they have traded away their first pick in this years draft and the size and length of the contract would get them back in the first round.

Watched last nights game vs Bombers, was surprised to hear hes only 26, thought he was 30-31.

He would certainly add value as a big physical body that can ruck and play either end...  if the club thinks Weid still wont be AFL ready next season then Trengove and Sam Reid (Swans version) should be targeted.

he's a free agent so all he'd cost is salary cap space.

he's a pretty good player who, as others have said, can play a role forward, back, and in the ruck.

i'm all for trengove over reid or tippett for instance...lever is the dream
