Has really improved his goal-kicking this year, especially from set shots.

2015: 40.29

2016: 29.14

2017: 20.6

I will blame you for putting the mozz on him if it all goes pear-shaped from here on in.

Great post. My kids love "Jeffy".

Hard position to play and as with Eddie Betts, you can't shine every week.

Carlscum must be spitting they gave up on J

The best part is, Adelaide need Betts kicking goals for them to be a chance.  As long as Jeffy is applying pressure, we are a big chance.  A lot easier to apply pressure than kick 3+ each week.

Just an aside to the man love for Jeffy.  His positioning this year has been first class.  He's always where the ball is dropping to, or about to drop.  He's quite unlucky that he hasn't kicked an extra 10 goals for the year - he's actually been a victim of our other players' improve their ball handling!

I'm going to go further on my previous post...

I just watched the replay of all our goals from the weekend (not hard to do after a win!).  I counted 11 of our 17 goals where Jeffy either;

- Kicked it himself

- Had an assist

- Pressured the opponent to give someone else the chance to kick a goal

- Was in the perfect place and was burnt by a teammate (Pedo burnt him twice!)

- Was running past the drop of the ball at pace, goal side of his opponent

Check out our 2,3,6,7,8,10,11,13,15,15 and 17th goals, but watch Jeffy just before these are kicked.

I'm pretty sure i read in the training reports that Jeffy did alot of running with Nev Jetta prior to the preseason.

Can anyone confirm?

And what you won't see was his great mark on the 3QT siren 1 on 2 - great use of the body and positioning. Unfortunately missed the shot, but really damaging and super hard to match up on.

Absolutely loving his effort, pressure and intent. He's clearly enjoying his footy at the moment, giving a bit of lip to the oppo fwds. Again I'd like to thank Malthouse for giving him to us for free. Gold.

Mmmmmm. Hope not: Jordan Lewis had shaved his off when seen on TV last night.

But, back to topic......Billy's post highlighted just how involved he gets both directly and indirectly when the balll is anywhere near him.  Well done, and keep it up.

Great thread. The small forward position seems a bit of a thankless one at times.

I've been a Jeffy fan pretty much from the day he walked in. He had swagger, the likes of which we had rarely seen at the club at that point in time. He still has the swagger, but he's bringing work rate every week and most importantly converting his opportunities.

There are 17 other clubs who would love Jeff Garlett on their list right now. He's a ripper.

Well I guess if a player is tackled a stat can only count in one direction. Either a kick, handpass or tackle.

Surely 2 stats can result from one bit of play.  A tackle which results in a disposal is of more value to the team than no tackle at all.  For a start, the tackled player may not get the ideal disposal they would have had if they hadn't been tackled.

If it's not his career best form, it's certainly the best he's played as a demon. And what a time. We don't have another small forward nipping at Jesse's heels that can be relied upon yet. the other small forwards like Harmes, ANB and JKH are in and out of the side.

And I'm seeing him run all the way to out defensive goal square to lay tackles. Who would have thought, with the way he was bundled out of the Blues, that he'd end up being as professional and fit as he is. I'd love to see him rack up more games with Demons (47) than with Blues (107) and be known as a demons player more. And I'd love to see more goals for demons (89) than Blues (183). He's turning 28 after the seasons over. He could easily do it. Still pretty young really.

Waite, Garlett, Betts. Wow. lol

His form this more has been at a consistently high level, all the more remarkable that he recovered from that hamstring injury in the JLT.

Here's our leading goal assists stats for the year, for someone who asked:

Rank    Player            Games    Total
2    Christian Petracca   8    11
10    Clayton Oliver        8    8
58    Jeff Garlett             8    5
58    Nathan Jones        8    5
58    Mitchell Hannan    7    5
58    Alex Neal-Bullen    6    5

Interesting. No watts. Can you do score involvements?

Wowee Track. So that stat is league wide? And Track is in #2 spot? That along with goals kicks, and his midfield work. He's starting to push Oliver.

Yep this is league wide, here's the whole table, Taylor Walker leads it and he's equal 2nd with Selwood, Gray and Fantasia:

It's all in the beard.

The longer and dirtier, the better the player. If you're climbing out of a garbage bin or running out of a homestead in Glenrowen, you're primed for success.

If it wasn't for Eddie Betts he would probably being talked about as a potential All Australian based on his form this season.

If he keeps it up he still might get there!

Great season so far from Jeffy.

I was thinking about this today. Jeff's only kicked 5 less. If he could kick a bag or two, which he doesn't really do in his role, I'd love to see him put in the squad.

That is a really really fair comment Adzman - Im sure he isn't the only player to suffer from ignorance from media (Nev being another just from MFC)

You'd be laughed off the forum if you suggested in January that Jeff Garlett is our most important player. With our pretty good form since Gawn went down, and our bizarre form with Hogan out of the team, you'd be hard pressed to find a more important player to our fortunes than Jeffy. He's the quintessential AFL forward.

Having said that, we're 4-1 with Lewis in the team and 0-3 without. He'd be in contention along with Oliver and Viney.

These clowns did rank our midfield the worst in the comp tho....

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/05/18/demon-is-best-small-forward-in-the-comp-luff/

I especially like this part:

Luff was steadfast in his view, even when SEN footy analyst David King questioned how a player that averages 10 disposals per game could be the AFL’s best small forward....“He averages 2.5 groundball gets inside 50 per game, his pressure is number one in the competition, he forces the most turnovers from his pressure in the game, he has an accuracy of 74% and he’s kicking 2.5 goals per game,” Luff replied.

Given the number of very good small forwards this is quite a feather in Jeffy's cap.  Even if people don't like the stats approach there is no doubting Jeffy's game has gone up a few notches this year.  Not only that he is performing consistently at that higher level rather than his cameos of last year.

Excellent thread.  Got me thinking where does Jeffy currently sit in the Demonland POTY voting?.

This is the current top 10:

92. Clayton Oliver
57. Jack Watts
52. Nathan Jones
39. Jack Viney
33. Jayden Hunt
28. Michael Hibberd
24. Jeff Garlett
23. Christian Petracca
22. Jordan Lewis
17. Christian Salem

I thought he might have a few more votes than that, but he's surrounded by strong contributors in a team on the rise.

Keep up the great work Jeffy.
