I thought 7 broadcast footy in SD even though it's normally  shown on their HD channel. Is that true?

Hmm it's certainly HD "quality" on 7HD. I believe what they call it in AFL and Telstra circles is "HQ" (high quality).

My Fox Footy stream is of a SUBSTANTIALLY better quality than 7HD, but that's because I'm relying on the Foxtel feed.

Bit of a glass half full  half empty scenario.

Quite frankly happy to have half a glass , than none.

I'd rather go to the game and watch in super dooper ultra high definition with full surround sound... But then I live 2000km away, so I guess I'll just watch on Foxtel HD (I don't even think it will make it into 7Mate up here!).

I love this. You could call it retina vision but Apple has stolen that for an inferior product.

just curious...so what does this mean in fact.

Looking at upgrading the old mega plasma so a few questions

Is it 720p or 1080p and what chance of ultra hd on FTA

Also what level is the HD on Foxtel. I have heard that the internet foxtel.... Foxtel Go is not as good quality as the cable version

Overseas I have cable and I notice the EPL is crystal clear whereas the tennis for example also in HD is good but not spectacular

Formula 1 were trumpeting that the race was now in ultra hd

Lastly is sound quality.... does it differ in the sense that some have 3/5/7 channel surround sound... again just curious

Many thanks

1080p is "Full HD". There are 4K televisions (Ultra HD) which are 2160p. There's not much 4K content around at the moment but there will be eventually. If you can find a good deal for a 4K television you should invest.

All HD FTA networks broadcast in 1080i max, and we're a few years off Ultra HD (4K) FTA broadcasting.

Foxtel broadcasts in 1080i as well but it's a much crisper picture because of how it's delivered. If you had a 7HD and Foxtel HD feed side by side you'll notice a better picture on Foxtel. The EPL I suspect is just broadcasted at a different resolution than the tennis.

Foxtel Go is "HQ" which is high quality. It does not stream in HD, hence the relatively "low quality".

I signed up to the AFL International Pass (watchafl.com.au) using a VPN to make the website think I am in the US, as it's only available internationally. It's a website stream of the Foxtel Fox Footy broadcast, delivered at 5mb/s (1080p), meaning it's upscaled from 1080i to 1080p, making it probably the best quality of AFL you can get.

few more question ... here in Australia I have ADSL 2.... speeds can be variable but at present it is 7.64 Mbps down and 0.9Mbps up... when I connect my VPN to say Montreal it drops to 4.84 Mbps down and 0.67 Mbps up..... Will this be enough to access the watchafl product at the quality you suggest

Does the watchafl product work on a smart TV or do I have to connect via another device and does it make a difference as to what that device is phone, tablet laptop

Just thought that if I am watching via the Smart Tv I would have to install my VPN on the TV... is that complex or just like a laptop install?

many thanks again

Yeah VPN can reduce speeds. There are many variables. ISP might be capping VPN speed. Distance might be an issue but if you're with a good service it shouldn't be an issue. Server load. Maybe try a different location?

At 4.84mbps, you might struggle to stream the 5mbs stream, but definitely the 720p stream. Maybe just pause it and let it load for 30 seconds.

I have tried watchafl on my smart TV but my browser doesn't play it. If you have an Xbox One, it works via its browser. It doesn't work with the PS4 browser. It works on my iPad, iMac, android phone. You can pick up a Chromecast, which should play it through the browser.

a reason why you may see different "quality" of fhd broadcasts is that fta stations broadcast using data compression algorithms which they can vary from time to time. the fta stations now support multiple channels within a fixed bandwidth. depending on the sum of the required resolution total they will use either a heavy or light compression algorithm.

another variable is that some of what you think (and your tv info panel says) is fhd (1080i) is actually something that the tv station has just upscaled. upscaling doesn't give you the same quality as what you are upscaling to

and they know that sport people will always be there as against the reality show's theatre going fast forwarders.

The truth is that probably the ads for MKR would have been sold nationally and probably have some kickers for ratings etc so the local show (which is what AFL is) goes to the secondary channel.

MFC does not really have much luck with FTA.... to anybody selling our product FTA is crucial and I suspect that we and the Saints are pretty well at the bottom of the ranking.

Even GWS with almost zero supporters has FTA every second week into NSW

Who cares what channel it is on... How about going to the game?

Sponsors pay you by reference to your exposure... attendances at the ground represent at best 10% of that exposure

Disappointing to see our first prime time match of the season has been shafted to 7mate so that Channel 7 can have My Kitchen Rules on 7HD in Melbourne next Monday night. We can't take trick.

Can you check that info Watts2

Both the club website and AFL website show Channel 7 for Melbourne.  Various FTA's in other states.:

Not true. They and Sydney have FTA every bloody week.  The only time an extra FTA slot is freed up is when GWS play Sydney.

Except, you know, the top 6 highest rated shows last year were sport, and 9 out of the top 12.

For those with Foxtel Satellite, rather than cable connections, there's also restrictions on which of the secondary channels the FTA networks transmit due to bandwidth restrictions, so until recently they couldnt get 7Mate, now they cant get 7Two as a tradeoff.

Noticed during the Easter Monday broadcast 7 were promoting the coverage as being on 7mate, thought it was a mistake so checked on my EPG,and other online guides.
