TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 1

Featured Replies

Disappointed that Kent misses, but that's a good looking side.  Very strong across the ground and I'm excited to see how Hannan goes in the big time.

I like the combo of Hogan, Weideman and Watts with guys like Garlett and Petracca hanging around to snag a few goals.

Add Hannan to those list of names. Remember watching the doggies in the VFL final and he stood out with his pace and X factor. Probably only had about 10 to 12 disposals for the day but had class written all over him.

Watch for him to speed around the forward half.

No tyson?

And Kent

But i can live with both out when they are underdone. Goody not making the same mistake they made with Brayshaw last year

Absolutely, dazzle.  I think we've got a good combination of class and X-factor in that forward line.  We look a little short in the back half, however I'd like to think Jetta and Smith will rotate through a few players down there as well while The McDonald brothers take the main two talls, whoever they turn out to be.

I feel as though we've named a very strong side.

A good strong side   but we have some serious Etihad and St Kilda problems    Go Dees need to go hard all daY

I love it!  'Horses for courses' (StKilda at Shitihad) team selection, I reckon.

No Dom Tyson, must need more conditioning. Looking forward to him and Kent being back in the team but quietly confident about saturday.

Not his biggest fan, but i feel for Pencil.

Done everything asked of him, in good form. What more does he has to do?

Not play for a team playing their first game at etihad against a hard running saints side

Im in the same boat as most that i think this is a fairly strong team. Nev Jetta being named just makes it look a touch stronger and reliable.

Funny that Goody rarely spoke of Jetta during the JTL series. Just show how highly rated he is amongst senior coaches.

I'm not a Neal-Bullen fan, but he's been included due to his pressure/tackling.  When a side gets the ball inside 50 they try to lock it in and Neal-Bullen works in that regard.  I prefer him forward than in the midfield, as he's a fumler under pressure and panics.  He's aggressive though, so the forward-line makes some sense.

Kent, Tyson and Hibberd are best 22 outs.  vandenBerg arguable.

Hannan is a smooth left footer with class.  For him to be selected is very exciting, because he's obviously shown the club the attributes they saw when they drafted him.

Clubs do match simulation every single week, so don't get too hung up on non JLT appearances, especially for players that were underdone due to injury (like Hannan) and not quite ready to go.

Pretty sure Hannan didnt play one second of the JLT series.

Excited to see what he can do as its clear the coaches rate him very highly

You're right - I'm confusing him with Johnstone.

Huge left-field selection!

Surprised to see ANB over other fringe players like Bugg and Harmes who I think add more especially defensively. I guess he can roll through the middle and win stoppages.

Where I've seen St, Kilda chew us up is with their outside run. Hence why a shorter quicker side is by design I think. Really important to have players who can push back quicker when we turn the ball over. Also why Spencer is out of this one on a fast Etihad ground. It was too risky to have him in this week but I'm sure we'll see the two ruck combo in the next few weeks.

Didn't even notice that Tyson wasn't selected - while I'd rather him in the side, it clearly shows that we want players in the side who are fully fit and ready to go.   If we take a passenger or two then we won't get near the Saints, so I'm happy to see him play another week in the magoos.

For what it is worth the team lineup is different on the MFC App. Same personnel but Hannan, Oliver, Smith and Oliver on the bench. In that team. Hannan an Etihad specialist maybe. Burned us in VFL G.F.

I think we have a couple of passengers in there Wb.

they might be fit but short on ability at this level.

I hope they improve with the experience because they have not shown much in the lead up games.

Big selection everyone has missed is No 18 Ray Chamberlain................NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

It's interesting being a supporter now, there used to be anxiety around players being picked because of name regardless of injury (supporters therefore liking that name) now it's a different feel for anxiety - it feels a bit uncomfortable now not to have a name you like - such a Tyson (whom I rate, but can butcher). How beautiful is depth... - i suspect the next decade will be vastly different from the past decade

Strange that Hannan didnt see a minute of JLT action, yet they feel he's going to be good enough to survive the cut and thrust at AFL level.

The only other fit non key-position players, apart from the 3 emergencies, are realistically Trengove, Kennedy and first year players Johnstone and McKenna,

so we dont have a lot of midfield depth at the moment.

While Spencer had a terrific pre-season, the fast deck of Etihad means it was too much of a risk to play him, Gawn, Hogan, Weideman and Watts in the same side.

Hopefully next week Tyson & Kent put their hands up for selection.

Had a short chat to Jack Watts in town yesterday and he seemed his confident self, at peace with the (football) world. I knew then he would be in the team. Go Jack! Go Dees!

Holy smokes. Goody off to an explosive start. lol

Hannan some pace over Tyson probably a good intention... but Saints would be laughing.

Gee as much as I love WEEDS he hasn't shown much to date! I would have gone with Pedo or Spencer at this stage!

WATTS  IN

Agree of Peds, he gives us more now than Weids does. Weids will be a much better player long term.

i think Peds might need a week or 2 at Casey though.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
