The problem is you (and me) see him for 2 hours on match day where he does some nice things and on other occasions he's looked slow and undersized (physicality) and gets exposed.

The coaching group see him train 3 times a week and get to monitor his progression.  They get to know the individual.  His character, leadership, temperament, intelligence, willingness to learn, work ethic, etc.

They see a player with flaws, but one who is continually improving and one they believe is on the way to becoming a backline stalwart for the next 10 years.  Given their recent track record I'd be a nong to doubt them.

Strange that you should mention this because when brother Tom started out, I envisioned him as being a potential Glen Jakovich but his disposal ...

is getting better and less unreliable.  I don't ever think that he will be masterful by foot, but if he can get the job done more often than not, I'm not sure he has to be a super kick to be a very damaging player.

My impression is that Oscars disposal skills by hand and foot are even better than Tommy's.

And that is not hard, but the issue is he is too easily outmanouvered! and his lack of pace. IF these things improve in the heat of game, then I WILL reappraise!

You will forgive my skepticism till I see this occuring!

One of a series of real heart aches at the time. Schwartz, Sean Charles and Jakovich all went down at the same time. And all of them had massive x factor. With no disrespect to schwartz who had generational player written all over him, Jakovich could have been every bit as good if not better.

Oh what could have been if they had all stayed in the park.

Oscar is now listed as 196 cm & 97 kg, the same height as Jack Watts and 4 kg heavier.

Can those that regularly attend training see the difference in his physical stature?

Still has the 2016 playing list on the app.

Raises the question of just how recently player data was updated.

Interestingly the AFL draft article below (Nov 13 2014) lists him at 197cm and 94kg. So in 2 and a bit years of development he has shrunk. Is it too late to blame Mark Neeld for this?

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-11-13/oscar-firms-for-second-round

Unfortunately the listed figures for players should be used as a guide only. It would be easier for us supporters if they were correct but all AFL clubs seem to play this game. Gut feel watching him run around during matches is he would be near 198cm these days. He certainly has his brother well covered.

I thought he was 196cms. He'd probably weigh just over 90kgs now, no way is he heavier than Watts and 1-2 kgs off Hogan. His bro weighs around 100kgs too and he is definitely not as heavy as him. Maybe in 2 years or so he will get to 97kgs, which would be an ideal playing weight for him, but he's still got a few years in the gym yet to get there.

He's pretty heavy through the thighs, his natural full grown weight will be 10 kgs heavier than Watts. Watts and Hogan are longer in the legs and probably have more spring in their legs. Oscar will get harder and harder to move in a marking contest as he has more weight closer to the ground. I think Hogan may have dropped weight in the last six months, both he and Watts will look to run a lot in the season, I think young Oscar will be more a stay at home backman on the less mobile forwards.

Not troubled at all by the two MacDonald's plus Frost being our KPDs.

Is Watts 93 kgs?

If so, he's now in the zone. AA is a possibility this season.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
