It's Jack's "great leadership on field and in the training track" that will lead us to a flag.

His media performance is meaningless in regards to our footballing result.

While I'd hope this is true, it is possible that a bloke who continually has problems with media performances may lose confidence in other areas. I'm not saying this is or would be true of Viney or that he has media problems - haven't seen enough of him to judge.  Just making the point that media performance is part of a captain's role these days and could affect other areas of activity for some personality types.

Your post suggests that the Viney appointment was a decision made by Goody and Goody alone. I'm not sure why.

Bar Melbourne of 2012, I'm not sure there has been a time where the captaincy decision was solely in the coache's hands. That's also probably because no club has been as much of a basket case in all facets.

Captains, vice captains and leadership groups are appointed by players and coaches. If Viney had receieved 50% of the entire lists vote for captaincy and Jones the other 50%, how would Jones feel about being made sole captain? You could just as easily argue that he'd feel as if he didn't have the entire lists support and therefore would feel uncomfortable in the role... Either hypothetical is pointless.

People have got to chill fark out.

As for the way he speaks publicly, I can only assume nobody has heard Hodge speak in public? He'd have to be the worst public speaking Captain of any club. Yet he remains far and away the best Captain of any club.

Do you know what the process was to appoint the captain/s this time?

From the outside looking in, this one seems to have been made by the coach.

Out-dated and naive view of the captain's role.

The captain is the public face of the playing group for members and sponsors.  Media performance is a key factor - we're trying to increase our membership by attracting new and churning members and we trying to promote our existing sponsors and attract a back of jumper sponsor.  If you think the captain's media performance is meaningless in this then you are sadly mistaken.  If you think membership and sponsorship has no relation to footballing result then you are further mistaken.

I think the coach is entitled to make the decision and I wouldn't be alone in thinking / hoping this is the correct one. Jack has got the qualities we've all been screaming out for for years at this club. Yes it's a bit of a shock now but i am certain the time is right..... and , though young, the man is right too. Someone here, hopefully correctly, said, Jack Viney will raise our next two premiership cups.

I would be happy with one pd

The amount of uninformed rot on this thread is laughable.  Things like;

- If Viney starts performing badly in the media, there's a chance it will impact his onfield performance

- Jack had a dust-up with an opposition player last year, so it's possible that if he and Jones don't see eye to eye on something, that Jack will start throwing punches

- That Viney doesn't "sound" ready, based on an interview on SEN

- That Todd Viney has a conflict of interest in this decision, and should step down (I know that was Picket that raised this, so take with a grain of salt)

The above is only in the last 2 or so pages!

I'll admit, I thought the idea of Viney as a dedicated Vice Captain would've made sense, but the thing that makes more sense than that is that the people who made this decision are in the inner sanctum, are getting paid to do a job, and have more knowledge about how this will go than any of us.  And the fact that PJ would've been involved/informed, and in turn given it the green light, means I'm more than happy to watch it unfold.  It will either work or it won't.  I have no interest in the "I told you so" if it doesn't, but as always, I'm happy to back to club on this one.

Seriously? He's put in all the hard work in turning this club around, only to be told by the new coach that he'll be splitting his role with someone far less qualified - no ifs or buts. People like Viney because he's uncompromising, and I'm almost certain he wouldn't take too kindly to this if it was the other way around.

Its such a [censored] stupid decision, it makes my head spin. What was the point of it? It just makes us look stupid to the rest of the league. Trial co-captains, twice, and finally get it right - before doing it all over again. Goodwin's made his bed by evidently imposing an executive decision, a captain's call, and will now have to put up or deal with whatever comes his way.

Yes, seriously.

He has been captain for five minutes.

Give him a chance.  Jones could barely string a sentence together when he got the job and he was 26 or thereabouts.

I didn't say anything about Jones' or Viney's performance.  I just said that it is very important.

I think our membership will rise when we win more football games.

The articulation (or lack of) of the captain in post game and in other media event is meaningless in this. I.e. Win games = increase memberships, play finals = increase memberships, win gf = increase memberships, articulation and media performance of captain = meaningless.

Jacks our best player of the past two seasons, one of our most professional and dedicated trainers and players... he's shifting the culture at the club so we train better and play better. Which will... win us games and... increase our membership.

Lots of Henny pennies around here, looking to shoot the kid down. Makes me wonder if you'll be disappointed if he's a great captain, and you are proved wrong.

In which sense?

A) it's silly to waste your bottled Viney when you have all that perfectly good Jones around you?

B) a splash of fresh Viney with do little to change the salty Jones reality?

C) water-polo is stupid. Much like predicting the world will collapse with Viney co-captaining the MFC?

You've got a comprehension problem.

I haven't commented on Viney's media performance anywhere - I already pointed that out explicitly in this thread.

I expressed the view that good media performance is important.  You said it doesn't matter.

Good media performance aids membership and sponsorship which delivers resources which make us better able to win games - it's an upward spiral.

Have a listen to Fyfe's interview on SEN, he's in a tricky situation and he handled it extremely well.  His club, supporters and sponsors will be very impressed.

I meant that yes he is washing his eyes of chlorine but doing it with his eyes closed, like Clint said, sums up this situation perfectly.

At that instant, like photos of players going for a mark with their eyes closed. But I see your point, what is the thread about again?

Have to disagree with you Fifty-5.  We have blokes like Vince, Gawn and Watts to be the "face" of the club.  They, especially Bernie and Max, would be able to sell ice to eskimos.  That's where potential sponsors will see the return for them.

It isn't a coincidence that two of the above-named players are in our leadership group too.

If you genuinely think that if Fyfe handled that SEN interview poorly that it would not have hurt Freo then I cannot help you further.

JV may not be the best public speaker the world has ever seen, but much like his now no co-captain, I think his lacking in that area gets overstated. He will improve over time.

The thing with JV is he has a simple, honest nature about him. One that will endear him to many people. See his appearance on TFS as an example.

Like Fifty, I place a lot of importance on the captain's media role, but I'm not concerned about him developing in that capacity.

Ha. It's funny how eager people are to point out that they don't watch it.

They've had a pretty good run for a show that nobody watches :)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
