Ablett senior, Swan, Hodge, Heath Shaw, Steve Johnson and I'm sure many others we don't know about have hardly been angles but have become elite AFL players.

And while I support your "don't drink and drive" message I think you're making a bit of an issue out of a situation where we don't know many of the facts.

There's only one fact that matters, and that is that he chose to drive with alcohol in his system. If you are suggesting that maybe it was residual from an earlier drinking bout, then he must have been extremely pizzed which if anything makes matters worse.  I would disagree that I was making an issue out of it...rather, I was pointing to the fact that now he is playing at the top level, he needs to exercise more self control. You are right about those players, but that doesn't make it any less unacceptable.

except the "another player" didn't smash "a car". it was his car but he was a passenger

at least that is my memory of the event

That's how it was reported. Not sure that is what really happened :)

You guys really need to lighten up. Its not a hanging offence FFS.

I think your hanging a guy without hearing the evidence.  But my main point though was that many players have a drink and are elite.

Please don't interpret my comments as being in any way supportive of drink driving.  I'm critical of making judgements without the facts.

For all we know he might've had a big night, slept a bit and was caught early the next day with a nominal reading, as opposed to drinking and subsequently driving.

The club will deal with it and I reckon Jones is well equipped in handing out a very decent spray.

If he can learn from it well and good.

At least he didn't go and hide with some Grubby character from ASADA.

Hopefully it will be dealt with in a manner that does not involve a spray.  Kids today don't listen and do not respond to a spray. Belongs to another era.

Not one of your better posts, Ernie.

In fact, its rubbish.

I don't think anyone is hanging anyone, for someone who purports to like the facts you are big on hyperbole.

The one fact that counts is that he was driving with a BAC level above zero, which for him is an offence.

Police have given him a penalty for it, and he has admitted it.  That is your evidence.

And for those who say it is not a hanging offence i beg to difer (well obviously it's not literally a hanging offence - we don't have  capital punishment thankfully) it should not be forgotten that if Oliver had had an accident whilst over the limit and someone had been badly injured or god forbid died he would face very, very serious charges (eg culpable deriving, manslaughter) - even if the accident was not his fault.

If, if, if you had been caught doing those illegal things that you have done you would have been in more trouble. If you had been born in Syria, if you were an astronaut, if you were a shark etc, etc. Hypothetical situations that did not happen.  Minor indiscretion, apologise get on with life.

Disagree completely. On two counts. Being born in Syria etc etc is out of your control, choosing to drive under the influence of alcohol is not.

The whole point of the zero limit for P platers is that sometimes split second decision/reactions have to made that are often the difference between having an accident and avoiding one. All of us who drive know that. For inexperienced drivers any impairment at all has a disproportionate impact and greatly increases the likelihood of an accident. Consider this - P platers are 30 times more likely than non P platers to have a crash. 30 times.

And that is only the half of it, for example alcohol is involved in 21 percent of driver deaths for 18-20 year olds and young drivers have a 3-5 times increased fatality risk at all blood alcohol content (BAC) levels compared to fully licensed drivers.

This is not a minor indiscretion.

I have no problem with the points you raise here.

If he had an accident - He did not. If someone was injured or killed - Did not happen.

It is a minor indiscretion, a stupid act if you like, but the overreaction here is exactly that an over reaction. No property was damaged no one was hurt, he did a stupid thing, we will know more with how he reacts, hopefully he will smarten up.

BAC Level Effects from Alcohol
0.02 - 0.03 BAC No loss of coordination, slight euphoria and loss of shyness. Mildly relaxed and maybe a little lightheaded.

Yes drink driving is bad, your statistics and extrapolations are irrelevant to Oliver's situation. Oliver did not have an accident and no one was hurt.

Let's agree to disagree.

Euphoria and Loss of Shyness can in this context translate into over confidence and reduced caution.. Mildly relaxed?? So not fully alert !! Lightheaded ?? >>>  wandering concentration !!

ooh yeah baby..thats the ideal for a young inexperienced driver ...for sure. Any wonder they are the highest represented in accident statistics !!

Yeah but there's other "smoke" circulating about Oliver's behaviours and this is "fire" evidence.

Players with "elite preparation" behaviours can often be a bit vanilla on field.  We can benefit from Oliver's dynamic personality attributes but he has to channel them for that benefit to be realised.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
