Interesting discussion with my niece on Christmas Eve (her and her partner are Melbourne barrackers, yet I have not been able to convince her to join or to enrol her her eldest toddler)! She spoke about Collingwood FC's Netball Team and the fact that she followed a lot of their player's, some of whom were recently poached from the Melbourne Vixens. She also mentioned that a number of the netball teams around Australia were directly aligned to other AFL and NRL teams, yet the  Melbourne Vixens were not. She thought that it would be very positive and consistent with our Women's AFL Team, if we aligned with the Melbourne Vixens, thereby increasing our appeal to many women who followed both codes.

Food for thought as we seek a competive edge in a city with nine AFL teams.

From memory we kind of tried to do that a few years back. It wasn't as official as them being part of our club but more our 'sister' club. I think we should go all out and have a netball and basketball team playing under the name Melbourne and in Red and Blue. Take over the whole 'Melbourne' brand. Hell even through in a soccer and cricket team as well!

When I started following the Dees, they were the "Melbourne Cricket Club Football Club" ( as one of the MCC sporting sections) so it is not too silly (though I feel it would be a 'long bow' to include the entire MCC membership in our tally)!

I see that we are now at 29,710. This is a bit disappointing only scoring 250 new members in the last three plus weeks. I genuinely thought that the pre-Christmas momentum would be maintained and that we would start the new year with 30,000 members plus. Time for everybody to get busy and sell the Club!

Cracked 30k, although momentum has dropped right off at the moment. Have to hope for the boost that happens at the start of the H & A...

30027  for keeping it accurate

I think there would be a substantial percentage of existing members who use the automated membership renewal facility, hence the pre Christmas spike.  I often say, while it is more Mickey Mouse than ever, the pre-season comp is vital for clubs like ours, to give a kick on to membership numbers.  Let's hope we go well and remain injury free.  I suspect if we do, membership numbers will jump drastically, before the start of the season proper.

see the annual tally thread

That shows we had an increase of 600 in the last fortnight vs. an increase of 1000 over the same period last year. Although we are a few thousand ahead, the initial momentum has faded dramatically with growth now 40% slower than last year.

This morning it is  31,041 up 178 from yesterday.

That is good increase for one day.  Which makes me wonder if the membership 'slow down' is a function of when staff returned from leave and catch up with what was there over the break rather than a tapering off of memberships.

It will taper off at some stage but as long as we keep the increase so far (from 2016) we will end up with at least 42,000 members.

Win a few pre-season and early in-season games and 45,000 should be easily reached!

The comparison to last year will include tomorrow. We are going to be within about 200 of the increase last year between the 4th week of December and 1st week of Feb. That will maintain the 3,000 increase to date over last year. Last year we maintained the increase on the year before from this point on. So as you say LH we are looking good for at least 42,000. Alas winning in the first round is going to be a tall order (if we do it watchout. Saints at Etihad) but we should be good for a few weeks after that.

I am one of a number of MCC members who are also MFC members and as our MCC renewals are due before September 1st (if you want to attend finals), I am sure that these memberships contribute greatly to the early spike in membership numbers. I was fortunate enough to receive my membership pack before we took off for Europe and managed to sneak my 2017 scarf aboard (un-beknowns to she who must be obeyed).

It did a nice little trip to L'Eiffel over Christmas and the vineyards of Bordeaux in the NYE.

I am so looking forward to a strong showing this year and with a bit of luck, a Finals appearance.

31,141 indicates that we are tracking at 50/day at present, so slowing again.

31,422 ? This is over 5,000 up on membership numbers at the same time in 2015!

Interesting to look at the figures from the last two years and see how we are tracking. At the moment we are about 11% up on last year and about 22% up on 2015. In each of those years between now and the final figures we added 40% to the total at the beginning of February.

Today's figure of 31,206 plus 40% bring up 43,689. I would be happy with that. be happier with 45,000.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
