A shame for H in the way it ended, but I'm impressed with how well the club handled it and looked after him, even if he hasn't necessarily appreciated it.

Either way, thanks for wanting to be part of the revolution, H.  You can watch us win our next flag from the stands and be happy you got to be a small part of it.

If he has medical advice that says he can't play then he'd be entitled to some form of payout anyway.

Speculating on the details probably won't help.

Regardless of whether he couldn't or wouldn't play we certainly didn't have any desire to keep him around so he's gone now.

He could stay on the list and not play (due to medical advice) and be paid. His decision to retire is his decision, I think some payout would be made.

I think it possible for anyone to get medical advice suggesting that playing AFL is dangerous. He has no ongoing concussion symptoms and no signs of long term damage.

We move on.

What a peanut.

Let's wait for all the lefties to come out and defend him and turn it into a racial debate.

Fair chance this post will be deleted.

H. has retired on the AFL Website.

Thanks Sandra, perhaps he will return next year at Geelong, they have a place for him now that Mitch Clark has gone.

I wish him all the best.  We will (have already) moved on.  I think MFC handled it well, without too much angst or fuss.

i dont think we are weaker with him gone- there seems to be significant competition for his position now.

We now have one spot open on the senior list.  Shame he couldn't have exited before the draft, but can we still take any DFA that we choose if we have space?

You win some and loss some, we lost out on this trade, but saying that he cost us Mitch Clark so really Geelong lost out on this trade losing Varcoe

There are clearly many twists and turns in this story - and in the end the club may have done very well to avoid a damaging public backlash (including damaging payout headlines ). They may also have done well to protect H from further injury.

Having said that I don't understand why all this came to a head after final lodgement of our 2017 list. The issue first came to light when someone noticed that Jordan Lewis wore #8 to training. Where's H?

I don't understand why player and club didn't get to the bottom of the health situation until November.

We've wasted a position on our list . Might  only" have been an ultra-speculative  late pick - but you can't afford to waste anything in this ruthless competition

Somewhere along the line we let this issue  slip a month or two longer than it should

Anyway - best wishes H.

Possibly, but we need to remember that H was still under contract.  We can't force him to retire.  It was a decision that was clearly hard to swallow for him and, thus, it took him some time to reach it.  It would have been better to have it done in October, but I don't think H was ready to accept his fate then, and if we pressured him it could have been a lot worse.  This is the best outcome for both parties.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
