Trengove signs

Unfortunately, Jack won't make it as a player, so the decision to re-sign him is without doubt political and cultural IMO. Normally I'd be against signing someone of his output, but given what he's been through and the resilience he's shown, these are unusual circumstances worthy of recognition.

No the decision to re-sign him is based on the fact that if he can get anywhere near full fitness, he has a big big upside and is capable of seriously improving our midfield, as he did in his first two years. The doubt is not in his innate ability, it's in whether he can get near to full fitness or not. That can only be judged after he has a full preseason - if that makes no difference to him, if he's no better this time next year than now, then yes, he's gone.

But it's foolish and premature at this stage to delist him on the basis that this is as good as he's going to get.

I refuse to believe that at the stage we're at as a club, we'd re-sign a player on purely a political and cultural basis. The coaching department still see something in him, I'm sure.

I think they do but he is also very popular around the club and his team mates love him, how would CP5 feel if we turfed Trenners out after they went through rehab together, what sort of message would that send.

One year on a very low value contract will not break the club and if we replaced him with pick 96 what would that gain us?

Spot on Dante.

However  after watching yesterday I will be extremely surprised if he improves enough to be a AFL player in 2017.

He is now a plodder in the modern game.

Our future lies elsewhere.

I'd compare Trengove's first season to Brayshaw's, and maybe even a little better. He was on track to become a total freak, and there were plenty of comparisons to Jimmy Bartel. Makes his decline so much harder to swallow, but I truly believe he can get himself back to the point where he is a regular in the 22. He is a guy of immense character and football talent.

I remember first seeing Trengove play in an-intra club game in 2010 and being blown away by how smooth and composed he looked.

His problem however, has been that he's never really had any great tricks to his game. Despite his draft testing results he's never been a quick player with good acceleration (even before injury), he doesn't have quick hands and his kicking whilst nice has always lacked penetration.

For an inside midfielder he doesn't get the ball enough and for an outside midfielder he lacks the explosiveness to break away from packs. The Bartel comparison has some merit because he is a good mark over his head but aside from that he doesn't offer much else to really be damaging.

Gee I get grief for some of my posts, but I was embarrassed to read this, he has been given a 1 yr contract.

The same sympathy contract given to Jayden Hunt to see what he can do with hopefully a full pre seson under his belt

While I agree with this, Bartel is a great example of a player who doesn't have any special tricks, but just does everything right just about every time. He's especially good at the uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time, that JT at his best also shares.

Not a good comparison at all Satyr. Surely it doesn't need to be pointed out that they are completely different situations.

Yes it can Nev Jetta was given a special pre pre season program and  during the pre season improved every single running stat 3k, repeat sprint etc

The biggest issue being that Jetta hadn't had 2 navicular injuries in 2 years, there is no doubt he will still have to be managed carefully so it will be a balancing act as to how much strain can go on that foot.

Bartel has more tricks, he's more creative and even as he gets older I would say he's more explosive.

Demonland did howl down the decision to extend Hunt's contact last year; the more generous appraisals insisting he was a Rookie downgrade at best.  The major difference between the two being that Trengove has shown he has the talent to be an excellent AFL player, Hunt spent parts of 2015 in the VFL Development League.  The club has given him a year... the way people are talking on this thread, you'd think he'd been reappointed captain.

No thankfully that was a previous administration.

I think they did the right thing by offering Trengove a year, as there is improvement in him IMO. But Saty comparing Trengove and Hunt doesn't make a lot of sense. I understand the reluctance of some to support the decision, seeing as his horrendous injuries might have robbed him of the bare minimum pace that is required to make it back to AFL level. Hunt was a developing player without the terrible injury history that Trengove has, and hadn't even played a game.

JT has tricks.  You said overhead marking, that's a massive strength.  His skills are solid on both sides.  Most important, he knows where to run.

He's a link player with good vision but frustratingly doesn't attack enough.

With the Goodwin program, he'll be an absolute gun next year and definite best 22 I reckon.

How can something that's "in your own opinion" be without doubt?

Are we still having a debate about whether it was valid to give a long-term injured player a one-year contract on presumably low money in order to give them a chance to return to fitness, at a time we don't even have a first-round draft pick and already have a pretty good sized list turnover coming?

The mind boggles.

Some people will just fix on something and bang away at it in an effort to sound like they know better.

Trengove's one-year contract is surely neither a big deal nor controversial.

Needs to train with Usain Bolt if he is going to be a midfielder for us in 2017.

I still love him, but there's no doubting his lack of pace is still holding him back.

Now that he has had a full year of serious volume to his running, he'll be able to concentrate solely on his acceleration and power over the pre-season.

When I look at a player like Matty Boyd, I think to myself that there's still light at the end for Jack.

Maybe a change positionally would be perfect for him.

Hunt was out for nearly 2 years with a serious back issue, so hence my comparison, he was even doubtful he would offered another chance

All this rubbish about pace, I was quite quick when I played but I was helped by the ball being delivered cleanly when I was either outside my man or out the back

Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis have 4 premierships between them coz they could deliver to the guys with pace, Trengove has the same ability.

Jack and Kennedy are not exactly lightning fast either

Quite simple the FD have given him a year to see what he can do, suggest we do the same, because we all know the result if he doesn't produce

After going to the game yesterday and a number of Casey games this year I'm sorry to say and I hope I'm wrong but think his done.

His still relatively young and with a full pre season who knows.

I also think he's lost some penetration in his kicking.

Depresses me that a grown adult doesn't know the difference between his and he's.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
