Putting the jokes aside, how do you actually hate footballers you've never met? I couldn't give a stuff about any afl player and what they've done on the field. We drafted Bugg didn't we? Approaching this purely from a logical and rational position in terms of his ability and potential contribution to the team makes the only sense.

Why?

WTF is wrong with some supporters? 

Here are some facts:

- We are one of the youngest lists within the AFL

- We still lack senior figures and leaders at our club 

- Harvey's year this season has been as good as any one of our players, if not better

- There are no signs that his form will drop considering the shape he keeps himself in

 

There are so many ninnies on here that have 'hang-ups' over individual players at other clubs, it's pathetic. And ya'll base your arguments on exactly that, a 'hang-up'. 

Yet many supporters are happy to defend the Garlands and Dunns of this world. Genuine degenerates who should be leading the way for our young side but are not. 

There's a reason Harvey is a champion AFL player and if he even had the faintest bit of interest in playing on for another couple of years, I'd hope to hell we'd be a club that'd be interested in acquiring him. St Kilda, the Dogs, Carlton. All of these teams have had senior figures who inspire, teach and help fast track the development of young lists. Which is part of the reason why they haven't bombed out down the bottom for very long.  We're the only club within the AFL besides the newbies, (GWS and GC) who have had to bring in senior experience and leaders. Harvey fits the bill. Without a doubt.

I just look at the GWS model and ask why can't the exact result happen to us with Harvey in it?

Alot of GWS players  have praised Johnson for his leadership and guidance and i have no doubt the fresh start has really helped his football this year. Johnson has won games for the Giants this year and i could see Harvey doing the exact same for us next year.

Another big hole is our experience. Can't continue to rely on Jones and Vince to carry us and lead. Need another voice to help them out.

I would prefer he went out on his own terms at North than go to another club but that ain't gonna happen.

My big if's on getting someone of his age is when the downward spiral comes ( and it does come to all athletes) it will happen pretty quickly to a 38 year old.

The question is "can a Harvey seamlessly move to new team mates, with a new coach, with a new game plan and produce what he is producing now ?"

If the answer is yes you would take him ( and it appeared that Stevie J adapted very quickly to his new home and Daniel Cross was great value for us). I would hate for Boomers sake to go to another club and struggle - not a fitting way for a great of the game to go out.

We could. Or his presence could just fast-track or improve the development of a younger player for the chance a year or 2 afterward.
I don't see him as a leader per se, but that doesn't preclude others from following his lead.
And his game provides exactly what we lack - speed, agility, run, link play.

I hope this post is a joke. If you've watched Petrie at all this season, especially his second half, you would see he is absolutely done, Dal Santo like wise.

I don't think it is about a premiership - Double edged sword - further develop young kids - and a Harvey obviously stymies that.

Others at the club learn from the likes of Harvey. The feedback received from the Daniel Cross has been truly amazing. He educated players around him both on and off the field. That's what a Harvey can bring.

Having said that - in my previous post I did suggest a big if - on how quickly his "end" will come.

I don't think we're anywhere near close enough to a premiership window to warrant drafting Harvey. I'm not disagreeing with what he would bring to the club but I think we are building nicely from the ground up, drafting a 38 year old would seem to go against what the club has been putting in place.

In a year when we look like losing a bit of experience, and having few early picks to use, I'd think it's the time to roll the dice on a short term mature player. 
Risk is mitigated by the low salary and the late pick you'd be replacing. Reward could potentially be high.

My personal view is their timing on Petrie, Firrito and Dal Santo is probably about right from a list management perspective but they should have waited until their season was over before announcing. A pretty horrible PR decision no matter how you look at it.

As for Boomer, he was BOG last week against the league's top of the table Swans. He was probably the difference between our Rnd 3 win/loss which in the end has also proven to be the difference between us making finals this year (along with the notorious Bombers match).

Boomer is also super creative, usually involved in about 30% or more of North's scoring chains and is very accurate in front of goal either on the run or a set shot. That accuracy alone is worth something in today's game, which often sees players (even some of the best rated) missing from 25 or so out, sometimes directly in front, due to fatigue issues or the player just not being that accurate even though he may have decent/excellent skills in other aspects of his game up the field.

In addition this bloke is very hardy, he rarely misses a match. But he is old as footballers go obviously and would need to be 'managed' well. IMO he would need regular 'rest' options throughout the year in order to get the best out of him. Something North failed to do miserably this season IMO, and not just with Boomer. He might need to miss 2 to 3 rounds or so in order to keep him up and about and allow his aging bod some decent recovery time from general soreness.

However, if he is on the park he is usually "on". He rarely has a poor game. He is also an extremely tricky player to try and match up on and not many clubs, including us this year, are able to find a match that will keep him quiet.

How many times have we worked our way off HB this year and through the middle through a hard press/zone only to look up and find no one inside 50 to give it to!? Boomer knows when and where to run and reads the play better than most and would probably be able to take advantage of these situations quite often. No point doing all that good work if you don't get enough chances of scoring up the other end! That's not to say we haven't been successful here, i've seen us kick a number of joe-the-goose goals. But why not add even more firepower and finish?

I have also been harping all year that this list, being the most inexperienced in the AFL every week, was way too skewed towards players under 100/50 games, exposing us to teams who have the edge in tight games (experience wise). IMO we need to balance out our list a little at the top end, where in most weeks we are lucky if we have 3 to 4 players with over 100 games experience. With 430 games experience we automatically gain about one season's worth of games (on average per player) across the team. A huge boost and one that might get us over the line in a few matches eg., against North (5 points!!!). Might be the difference between playing finals next year and not. Also a reasonable insurance policy. What if that one or two games that we needed to win were against a team that picks Boomer up and he makes a significant impact on the day?

It's a big YES from me to a one year contract on moderate coin.

Petrie is done, did you watch him play this season, especially his second half? There's no point delisting Dawes then recruiting an older Petrie.

I always thought he was kind of a selfish type of player. Rarely handballs and not often gives the ball to,players in better position going for goal. To me it would also be like us paying him tribute money for an outstanding career played out at another club.
