We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

After Brisbanes second round pick.

They have just lost that ranga Merrett and have a desperate shortage of experienced defenders. I don't think it would be impossible to tempt them to giving us their 2nd pick for Dunn and Garland.

You could throw in Dawes too.

I reckon a package of Dawes/Dunn or Garland would have to be tempting, two experienced starting best 22 ( for them and probably noone else ) key position players, and allow us to keep one of Dunn or Garland as insurance

Why would it be of interest to them?

They have a group of young talls.

They are in a rebuild, they've just lost an ageing defender who has probably more runs on the board than Dunn and or Garland.

If you're in a rebuild you can't afford to carry older players who don't bring leadership quality to the club.

These guys, not their fault but they didn't have it in them to provide the leadership we needed in our rebuild/s.

Not going to happen unless good old Mark "moneyball" Neeld gets the gig.

In answer to your first question, they need some experienced defenders.

you talk leadership qualities, well Paul Roos chose Dunn as a vice captain and Garland in the leadership group this year, sure they aren't perfect but I think Roos knows a bit more about their leadership qualities than us.

Paul Roos has selected all three in the leadership group in the last two seasons, Brisbane are totally void of leadership and experience at both ends, they'd both be clearly in the best 22, and give them someone to help teach the young talls you speak of.

I think it's very unlikely but if any team is going to look at those players, i'd say it's Brisbane, and if we could work out a package i think it could work out alright for both sides. they get a couple of key position players, we get a pick.

This is a nonsense argument. It's hardly a ringing endorsement from Roos and I think you both know it.

It's more about there being no one else and not wanting to put too much responsibility on younger players yet.

We all know that one of our big failings as a club has been leadership from our older players. It's why Trengove was appointed as a captain at such a young age.

Jones has been the only player from this group to stand up & thankfully we were lucky to get Crossy & Bernie to help him over the last few years.

Brisbane would laugh in our faces if we asked for pick 20 for 2 players who can't get a game and are 29 & 30 early next season. Dunn is worth zilch and Garlo would be lucky to net us a 3rd round pick.

Fair point, was too lazy to look up their ages. Would throwing Wagner in the mix make it a chance though?

Garlo & Dunn both signed 3 year contracts when they were free agents, i doubt we could get any club to take over their contracts, i suspect we are paying them more than any other club would be prepared to play. i don't think we have any players we would be prepared to trade that will net us pick 20 RG.

I don't think the club would trade Wagner, noticed this on the AFL website today;

Josh Wagner is one of a number of young players to be given opportunities in defence and has been the Demons' best pressure player with 10.8 points per game, 13th in the AFL.

You should have quoted Rjay's second sentence and then it is not a nonsense. The likes of Dunn and Garland were in the leadership because it was a choice of them or ummm...errrr... well basically it was choice of them or no one.

We are still the youngest list  - look at who are top 10 in the demonland votes are (Note- leadership group is not only about being best on the field but is part of the equation). 2 x 21 year olds, 1 x 22, 1 x 23, 1x 24, 1 x 25, 1 x 26 - then you have Jones at 28 and Vince at 30. This looks great for the future but can present problems for the present.

Dunn and Garland were in the leadership group as they were mature and the were pickings very slim.

Garland was selected in this years leadership group, I would accept the argument for 2014, not 2016

As they're contracted players, I'm not sure they'd want to leave.  They've spent their entire careers at a basketcase club, why would they want to join another one just as the Dees are coming good?

Better pay day? To get regular AFL matches? It's not like a finals side will be knocking their door down.

Merrett is completely finished as a player, if he had anything left he'd be staying on and Brisbane should be looking for an experienced defender. For most of this year they have had Merrett and a bunch of kids under 50 games and have given up record scores. In my mind Brisbane would be crazy not to get at least 1 experienced defender in. When our midfield stocks were bare we went and got Vince and Cross and that was the best thing for our development.

I also think that's unfair on both of them, and wrong. Dunn's been pretty important to Tom McDonald's development, he's a vocal on field player who prior to this year was well regarded for his ability to set up a backline. Garland is a good off field leader, a popular team mate who's helped keep the group together.

Neither would top my list of mature recruits but Brisbane aren't landing an A grader and probably will struggle to land even a decent depth player in their prime. So Dunn and Garland might be the best they can do. Josh Walker was the best they could do when they needed a forward to do the same thing. Trent West for when they needed a ruck.

What we'll both agree on is we aren't getting pick 20 for them, but to move one on and maybe get a slight pick upgrade or a pick for points could be a good deal.

Jake Niall threw up up Dunn and Garland last night, as the sort of players the Lions should chase, to help their younger players, by adding experience to the defence, with Merrett retiring.

How much have they helped our younger players? Our back line is the youngest line of our young team.  You'd think if anyone needed a bit of experience, it'd be us.  Alas, we seemed to have coped just fine without them.

I'd be amazed if we got anything for these two.  Roos and Goodwin might as well have duct taped signs saying CAN'T PLAY MODERN DEFENCE on to their foreheads.

I am just the messenger. BTW I would still keep Dunn as Insurance but am happy to let Garland explore better opportunities. However if someone made a decent offer for Dunn, well we couldn't stand in his way could we?

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger.
