Yep, but a new era can kick back in pretty quickly if the punt pays off.

Geelong where at the end of an era...Scarlett, Ling, Corey, Johnson, Mooney etc.

Their punts were the likes of Stanley & Smith. Danger wasn't a punt, brought in an A grader.

The Hawks may get lucky, Vickery turns the corner & O'Meara drops back into pre injury form and becomes an A grader.

or they may have left their run too late.

 

...by the way O'Rourke was another that's been a fail to date.

Tony.. Frawley was never in Sydney calculations. It was always out of Geelong (join his best friend Rivers) and the Hawks. He had meetings with Freo but he had his heart set on being in Victoria.

Think that is why they have been so successful lately, using their academy at Box Hill to develop players properly, there is never any rush with them, O'Rourke is one for the future methinks

The AFL site has an article on how they might pay for Mitchell, O'Meara and Vickery It includes the following comment:

"With Bradley Hill likely to depart for Fremantle and veterans Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson taking pay cuts to play on in 2017, the Hawks are understood to have the salary cap space to accommodate O'Meara, Mitchell and Vickery."

Mmmmm is what I say. They must be big pay cuts and Hill must be on real money to free up around the 1.2 to 1.5 million a year you would need for those three players.

I think the Hawks are rolling the dice.  Mitchell is/will be a good player. Jaeger could be a star, may be finished already. Tyrone is a solid player but he isn't nor will he ever be Roughy. 

They already look slow IMO.  Lewis, Hodge, Sam Mitchell, are going around next year but we've seen with North how quickly things can change.

Like them or hate them these players are champions of the game and they won't be replaced by those currently on the list or those they are trying to pick up this year.  

I think the doggies will roll them this week. If not I can't see them beating GWS who I think the Hawks fear.

I will preface this by saying that YES I didn't want O'Meara but this whole business of 'nominating' destination clubs must be of serious concern to the head honchos at AFL house. Hawthorn will have to trade for him, sure, but it will be at a discounted rate. Only two clubs in recent history have tried the "[censored] you" attitude that Gold Coast are bluffing about presently. 1. Was St. Kilda with Luke Ball and 2. GWS with McCarthy. Both sides it backfired and would do things differently if they had their time again. 

People will say Hawthorn are on the way down but weren't we saying the same about Geelong last year? Nek minnit, they signed a raft of good players who 'nominated' them for next to nothing and here they are again the top of the ladder. I predict the same will happen to Hawthorn.

The AFL could do something about it. They must sign off on all trades as being fair and reasonable for both clubs. Not going to happen, but they could just say no to the Hawks.

Geelong are also about to fall off a cliff. Dangerfield, Selwood and then who's their next A grader? Exactly. They don't have one. Not enough talent there to win a flag.

I'm going to play devils advocate on this one. McCarthy should have thought what signing a contract means before agreeing to stay with the club for another 3 years.

GWS have enough 1st round picks on their list and high picks to go the draft with every year so there was no real need to force a trade for the sake of getting a early pick for a talented youngster. Basically they've kept a talented player who was out the door from playing against them for an entire season, and they can do it again for another year if they wish, they probably wont though.

But if they did, a talented kid, 2 years out of the system and unable to even play in seconds league unless he went back to Sydney, that would be pretty hard to come back from. McCarthy on their list benefits them at the moment regardless of if he's playing for them or if he's sitting on his couch in WA.
