plus he's very hard at it.

That's the key with Smith right there.

If he had all of these attributes but his attack on the footy was no better than Howe then I'd be less enthused.

If you don't have a crack in this side you won't get selected.

I fear for Garlett if he's not careful.

I agree Smithy looks to have huge scope for improvement with some really exciting attributes. (Similar to Hunt before he broke through).

I don't share the view that his foot-skills are that good however and the games I saw were proof of that. He is definitely pretty hit and miss in my eyes.

Smith, Melksham and Hunt share similar strengths.

Wagner, Salem and Hibberd all share similar strengths.

The running power and line-breaking ability of that first group is important and I reckon Goody knows that in the modern game, that pace is best utilized on the wings. Ala Hawthorn with Smith and Hill.

Thats just how I see it.

I honestly don't know what our best 22 is. And I like that. 5 years ago I'd name 10 then go ... umm... Now I'm trying to fit 30 into 22 and that's without Lewis, Milkshake and Hibberd. It's a good place to be. Sorta like not caring about the top 20 in the draft.

In my opinion..

Red are players who i believe if fit, will play round 1

black are the players i think are fighting for their spot

I think Garlett and Clarry are very likely to play also but not 100% certain for either, all depends on form and team balance

Jetta T McDonald Frost

Hibberd O McDonald Hunt

Vince Tyson Lewis

Petracca Hogan Kent

Garlett Weideman Watts

Gawn N.Jones Viney

Salem Brayshaw Oliver Melksham

Really don't understand the lack of love for Billy Stretch - he's the only legitimate winger on our list; he's quick, makes good decisions and is clean by foot.

In a team that is crying out for these things, he's a lock for round one (barring injury).

The groupthink is strong in this one. Garlett will be there round 1 barring some unfortunate injury. Please provide alternative scenarios if you disagree.

What groupthink re Garlett ?

When did it start ?

And by whom ?

I question his place, but not through any "groupthink".

Please share...

He is not an automatic selection.  His season was terrible.

A few have questioned Jeff and Jetta's position in the team in the long-term planning. Perhaps rightfully so with some decent but debatable arguments. But all of a sudden both boys are starting to slip from favour for round one 2017. I don't believe there's any justification for such thinking except for the negative momentum here on Demonland. I would think both are in the first dozen locks in their positions. I'm mostly curious as to alternative scenarios. Who does Garlett get bumped for? What is the imagined forward set-up without him?

Terrible? As posted above - he shared almost identical 2016 stats with Watts. And as someone else posted - forward pocket can be a dead zone. If you're not in the game you can be left totally absent. He had some games where he wasn't switched on for sure - but otherwise, I think he was adjusting like many to our new game plan. Of most note for me - his indecision in scoring range - looking to pass off too often rather trusting instinct and taking a shot. Maybe team directions.

There is an edit function on Demonland you know (ideal for these situations)!

Th three that interest me after a pre-season are Garlett, Trenners and JKH, the latter two because Trenners needs to start a pre-season, fully recovered and JKH had a bad run though the season proper. I don't think that we have seen the best from these three as we haven't from either Weideman or Smith, both who should emerge from the pre-season as much more value.

You didn't answer my questions.

Be more specific.

I think he is an automatic selection.

He is a unique player and, unless his form is absolutely horrible, he is on the team sheet every day of the week.

Yeah, see, I reckon the way the modern game is and certainly the way we're looking to play it, half back is where speed is best utilised.

The momentum and pace of someone like Hunt or Petracca through the centre square, off the back of the stoppage when we win it, is really difficult to defend against if you don't win that initial stoppage and set up extremely defensively yourself.

I don't think too many on here would disagree that both Jetta and Garlett are automatic selections when playing at their best.

Jetta came 9th in the B & F, one vote behind Hogan and only the third non mid (to T.Mc and Hogan). There were numerous occasions during games that he held the backline together. Time and time again he puts his body on the line and he is a reliable disposer of the pill. When playing at his best Nev's name can reasonably be mentioned in the same sentence as AA squad selection.

Garlett's best is very bloody good indeed and I love it when the footy is in his hands. Fun stuff can happen. Unfortunately the gap  between his best and worst is huge. If he can't  find that consistency next season then his spot could be taken by a less talented but more reliable player.

At their best however I can't see either being replaced.

Garlett is as soft as butter.

It will be interesting to see how Goodwin shapes this team.

I'd concerned if I was Jeffy.

I think Hannan will get a go earlier than most think, probably for Kent

Hannan from  his highlight reel works hard both ways and tackles like a demon

A really good pick up in my opinion

When i watched games live, it seemed to be kents role to sprint from ball carrier to ball carrier when our forwards were outnumbered (and the opposition was trying to clear the ball out of defence). His speed and pressure was better all season than anyone else in my opinion. So i would think that he is easily safe and someone else (Garlett for example - although i like him even though he drifts).

I like the inclusion of Tim smith in our starting line-up (not sure it will happen but i like it for the Weid - maybe both can rotate throughout the year in the one posiiton). I think we all agree weid won't be ready this year yet.

Exciting times, Go Dees!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
