If he is healthy and does have a strong pre-season, then I think he makes the best 22. However it's hard to see both of those things coming to fruition, if his last couple of seasons are anything to go by.

I see a lot of interesting 22's in here. I can't say anything definitive about the make up of our round 1 2017 side, but I confidently say this:

a) I believe we will not suffer (now or later) by not participating in rounds 1 & 2 of the ND this year; and

b) even if we did participate in the early rounds - for the first time in a while we wouldn't have to place an expectation on those high draftees (like Oliver, Brayshaw, JKH etc .... all the way back to Trengove and $$) as 'walk up starts' because they represent genuinely better prospects for round 1 than some of the incumbents.

That is not to say that, hypothetically speaking, none of this years vintage would be able walk straight into the side at round 1; just that I'd be fairly comfortable NOW in giving top draftees an opportunity to earn a call up with consistent form in the VFL instead of gifting it to them out of necessity.

I'd go with the following:

Jetta  Frost  O McDonald

Hunt  T McDonald  Hibberd

Salem  Tyson  Stretch

Petracca  Hogan  Watts

Kent  Weideman   Garlett

Gawn  Lewis  Viney

Oliver  Vince  Brayshaw   Jones

Emergencies -  Melksham  Harmes  Pedersen/Kennedy

Easily the toughest "best 22" I've tried to make in a decade.

FB: Jetta T.McDonald O.McDonald

HB: Hibberd Frost Hunt

C: Vince Viney Salem

HF: Watts Pedersen Petracca

FF: Garlett Hogan Kent

Foll: Gawn Jones Lewis

Int: Oliver Stretch Brayshaw Tyson

I'm tipping Casey will be right up there again this year.

No problems with the above team however, I suggest the following:

Emergencies: Melksham, Trenners, Vanders

Also l suspect that after the pre-season we might have assess whether Weideman or Pedersen is our best key forward.

I like this line up. I think that Weideman will play more often than not. The only concern is the second ruck role. Watts has done a great job and it does get him into the game but I am concerned at the toll on his body. Peterson may have to come in for Weideman but your team looks the most dangerous to me. There will be some good players waiting in the wings.

I actually rate Watts in the ruck. I know the club have said it's not ideal playing him there, but there were times in 2016 where I thought he rucked better than the bigger fella. And most of the year he was able to at least halve the contest.

For me:

FB: Jetta - Frost - Oscar

HB: Hibberd - T.Mac - Hunt

C: Salem - Lewis - Vince

HF: Trac - Hogan - Kent

FF: Garlett - Pedo - Watts

R: Gawn - Viney - Jones

I: Melk - Tyson - Oliver - Brayshaw

E: Harmes - Weiderman - Stretch

Agreed. Last year it was Hunt. Smith would be a good contender if he has a great pre-season.

We have very little tall depth down back, it is essentially just Garland not that Dunn has gone.

Plus Pedo and White (if he stays on the list), if we do need back up it'll depend on who were playing. I'd hope we might get another taller back in the draft or as a rookie, and I wouldn't mind a state leaguer unless a really good draftee slips.

Spells trouble for Jets then, doesn't it?

I know he had a slightly disappointing season in 2016 and he is not in many teams here, but I still feel Vandenberg can elevate his game if he can get his body right.

It's more big defenders, White, Lumumba, Wagner and Garland are only medium size.

I expect we'd be looking at a developing tall defender in the draft, or maybe someone like Xavier Richards. Regardless, I'd be trying Hulett as a key defender.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
