FAREWELL JACK GRIMES

Featured Replies

I'm thrilled for Jack.  His first game of the season.  The pressure must have been immense on him to perform.  And, he stepped up to the plate beautifully.  Couldn't have asked any more of him!  Well done!

Came here to see if anyone would be picking apart anything miniscule.

Completely belonged out there tonight. Great at finding space and linking up

I knew it. Withhold a player for 10+ weeks and build up his hunger and he'll deliver. Now to apply this technique on some other players.

Not a bad return game.

Still has a massive issue with disposal, while he played well he still tends to panic kick long.

Something to build on. I'd expect him to play next week, and hopefully he can build again

Grimes was good mmmkay

Fremantle are bad mmmkay

I'm a massive Grimes fan and hope he can get a few more games under his belt before the end of the season - but I reckon his style of play doesn't align with the rest of the team.

If he gets caught in traffic he'll hold onto the ball and lock it in. Every other demon player now tries to move the ball forward - no matter how scrappy.

If the ball comes to him and he's almost out of the scrimmage he tends to then handball back in and often so quickly it's a complete waste of a posession as no opposition players have moved towards him to then create space for the person he handballs back to.

Flat out can't kick to a team mates advantage - which is a particular concern when he's often kicking to a contest:

He's often kicking to a contest because once he gets a mark he doesn't move the ball on quickly.

Love his effort and would love for him to be part of the team going forward but until he can get a bit more urgent and forget the teachings of previous coaches I'm not sure he stays in the best 22.

Great summary. I hope he can build with time but i can only swe him being a depth player at best.

There once was a fella named Jack

Against Freo it was his first game back

He was put through the ringer

Before flipping supporters the finger

By putting in and having a crack!

Welcome back, Jack!

this reminds me of the old "No offense... But" line.

"I'm a massive Grimes fan"... but.

He played well, leave him alone.

Whenever he had any pressure on he didn't look like it winning the footy and he didn't do anything with the ball.

Made a terrible error by not manning the mark that led to a Pavlich goal in the 3rd quarter when the Dockers were coming. Baffling from a senior player.

The only positive compared to Bugg is that he has an opposite foot, but it's shaky.

I'm almost certain he won't play well against the Saints and therefore I wouldn't pick him. A 100th and farewell game against Carlton or Gold Coast would be fine by me.

I'm sorry if this upsets people or they find it cruel and out of spirit from this thread but too bad.

Looks like he will earn the 100th

Didn't think he would get there, but he deserves another one after tonight

28 points are still on offer. Keep winning and you never know...

You're in la-la land.  That's what's too bad.

Yup. Spot on.

He and Grimes both have weaknesses to their games but they both put in time and time again and so it's hard to not enjoy their efforts and scream in frustration at their stuff-ups.

Both should clearly hold their place for next week.

Good game Jack!

Without doubt he's earned and should get a 100th game or more.

I'd prefer to rest him next week & play him the following week though, because I fear he tried so hard today, I therefor predict he'll be tired & play worse next week & then be dropped for the rest of the season.

Perhaps if we play him the week after next, instead of next week, we'll get more good games from him this year.  Just a thought to use our depth to keep a fresher team on the park each week so we don't lose the week following each win.  Cheers.

Came home and saw the horrible turnover early in the game and I was really sad, then I saw the rest of game. Good'on'ya Grimesy!

Nah, just says a whole lot more about you than it says about Grimes. Not picking teams according to form is a great idea ...

"If his cards really are marked (which I fear they may be), at least it did his trade value no harm." What even you could have said.

I really hope he can hold his spot. Love seeing him racking up wins that he never got to experience as captain.

What is form? VFL form. The same form that ANB, Michie, Spencer and others have had all year? AFL form - 1 game, plenty of touches - as did the rest of our midfield and half back line, no real influence. I don't see it as form.

I could talk about his trade value but I don't think he has any. There's plenty of players in every club who dominate in the state leagues each week and don't get traded.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

With their season all over bar the shouting the Demons head back on the road for the third week in a row as they return to Adelaide to take on the Crows. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
