Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

surprised most want a KFB and the least want a KPF.

as far as trading in players, Id say KPF/2nd ruck is one of our biggest needs if not the biggest.  Dawes, Pedo are not upto it. Weed and Hullett will not be impacting games this year or next at the least.  they should play some games next year but they wont get us to finals

Put Frost down back with Mac brothers and Dunn, Garland and draft a young defender

We need a proper target up fwd to complement Hogan

I want both...2nd fwd/ruck  and a FB any decent mids are icing

All very good considerations. Some have mentioned Dawes, I agree that if he can't get on the park he'll be gone at the end of the season. If he can get a run, I wouldn't be against trying him down back. Slightly heavier that Robbie Tarrant but could see him playing a similar role in defence.

I don't think it's 100% certain that Watts will be at the club next year, he has been much improved this year and I think he's value but he's RFA and there's a lot of season to play out.  If Dawes can get fit then he's clearly the option there, they are very different players but they can fill a similar forward role.

Reflecting on this I think a large element is who can be got.

Give Dawes an off field role in development

He has the brain of a good footballer not the physical attributes

Pederson so way ahead , no chance of replacing him unless injured

Potential delistings/trades for me currently stands at 7 (Dawes, Newton, Garland, JKH, Grimes, M. Jones & Terlich). I would have Dunn here too, but he is still reliable back-up as a KPD, more-so than Garland.

Jones & Terlich (unfortunately for them) would be apart of the mandatory 3 delistings, along with Michie. I'd keep/promote White, Wagner and King on the RL.

That leaves Grimes, JKH, Garland, Newton & Dawes needing to find new clubs, otherwise they too could be delisted.

We obviously won't delist all of them, some may go in trades, some will get the cut, other's will luckily stay on the list.

Plan A

Play Trengove for 6 games at end of season, hope he doesn't break down & trade him.

he's a time bomb probably won't get more than 20 more games

If Trengove's body holds up to the rigors of VFL / AFL this season, he will be a Demon in 2017.

It's early to call but ...

  • IMO Dunn and/or Garland will be on the trade table and there is likely to be a market for them.

Particularly if we are chasing Hurley, doesn't auger well for either (though it begs the question of what club would want a discarded KPB after the previous club replaced them)  I think it will be Dunn based on both contract and apparent lack of love from the FD.

As far as a starting Round 1 team for next year and positional changes, I'd like to see the following:

Through a trade or FA I'd like to see us land one KPD. Ideally Hurley, Day or May. Dunn and Garland are cooked in my eyes and neither have the desire to fight nail and tooth for every contest, neither inspire confidence in defence and both of them exude an inability to be composed when we need that most from our 'senior' players.

Through a trade, it's clear we also need a midfielder who can bring a complimenting mix of attributes to our contested ball winning kings. Ideally someone in the mould of Steven, Dahlhaus or Zorko. I'll settle with Prestia for now as he seems the most likely to leave and he has speed of sorts. But I see a definite lack of speed and class through our midfield which needs to be addressed.

Out of White, Salem and Wagner I strongly believe that two of them could become mainstay HB flankers/pockets for us going forward. I've already said my piece about Salem and what I think he needs to do to become an elite flanker. White is the other I see who if given the opportunity this year could really own a backline position. He has the foot-skills we need, rebound pace and the mongrel attitude you want to see from any defender. Hunt at this stage has fantastic pace but his kicking is really quite average and for that I don't see a HB position for him. (Yes I know we've just signed him).

Our forward-line and the future of our forward-line looks great so I don't see any changes there except for the injection of Weideman at some point. Same goes with out midfield brigade except for speed and class.

And we definitely need another mature Ruckman/forward to help Gawn. But perhaps the FD see Hulett as a direct replacement for Pedo who can similarly pinch hit in the ruck? In any case, I'd love to see us pick up someone like Jenkins.

So for Round 1 next year I'd like to see the following team lineup:

B           White                Hurley               Jetta

HB        Salem             McDonald           Vince

C         Melksham           Oliver                Kent

HF        Watts                 Hogan              Prestia

FF        Garlett              Weideman         Petracca

Foll:      Gawn                 Viney                Jones

Int:       Tyson               Brayshaw           Kennedy           Jenkins

The way the game is going and the advent of the interchange cap means players need to be versatile positionally speaking.

And a team like that have a host of players who can play a variety of roles.

We'd be playing finals without a doubt with a team like that.

Doubt they will let both Dunn and Garland go at the same time, unless we do get Hurley or similar. Frost and O Mac need another 12 months development.

I don't think either of those players will go. I have the feeling Roos rates Garland and I think if Dunn can regain touch and fitness, he can be a very valuable leader down back. At worst, a very handy depth option if we recruit another key back.

not sure as to desperate....but reckon they are out to snag someone.  Are we finally a destination club ( for the lateral thinker perhaps ) ?

for me a dream off season would see us re-sign Hogan and TMAC, as well as bring in Prestia and one of Jenkins/Hurley

If Hogan leaves we'll probably add a couple of good first rounders and a player as well but i am pretty confident Hogan will stick around

How are we going to get Prestia and Hurley? We don't have a first round pick next year. I think it would be fruitless to keep DAWES,GRIMES,TERLICH,DUNN,GARLAND,NEWTON,MICHIE,LUMUMBA and Max KIng. Matt Jones may be kept for bench warming duties …….. in the VFL. I am sure by the start of 2017 Frost and O'Mac will become the real deal. Brissy  would benefit from picking up some of our rejects. Someone out their getting Caleb Marchant, i think he is from GWS …….. good idea. Thank "god" for the footy factory……. GWS. The Weed and Trengove will probably be in the senior mix latter in the year, we don't need to rush them.

Over 90% of voting is now for between an expected 3-6 list changes. This link may be enlightening, with the mean average of turn-around last year somewhere around 11.5.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/review-2015/retirements-and-delistings

There are genuine reasons why we may have a smaller turn-around this year - a lack of veterans at retirement age, opting out of the first draft round, Melksham to come on board, and, of course, a sizeable group of young, developing talent still new to the list - which will then impact the need to retain some experience as well. The Doggies delisted seven last year and traded out one. Do we see ourselves at a comparable stage of development?

Id have to say it cant be too dissimilar  but for any number of viewpoints.

From where I sit we would only be looking to off load 3-4 and take in that sort of number. So for mine I selected 4-6 given the FD will have now decided some are for the road.

I sit in the  corner that suggest we need at least one more back. Firstly a decent FB and possibly a bit more depth . Players who can play the modern game etc.  Tmac cant do it by himself. He seems poorly assisted in terms of tall currently. So there's gaps to fill for starters.  We need that 2nd Fwd/Ruck . Its possible hes already on our list, just not there yet.

We could use a tad more in the middle  in the guise of a ready made insider. Having said that more outside pace cant hurt. Its a balance. We've got a bit of depth and quite a few to come through yet so the desperation to overhaul the list isnt there anymore.

its now about quality not quantity. Will be very interesting how this years EOS pans out. Should be very different from the last 3 years

I suspect from the comments made by officials and also from the list composition right now that we'll see minimal drafting and multiple rookie upgrades.  We don't have a first round pick at all, so we're already out of the premium talent.  I would say we draft with our second round pick and upgrade White and King.  That is our three picks used to meet the minimum requirement.

This of course means that we need at least three spots to open on our main list.  Roos has shown his preference here in past years.  Once they decide to cut a player they don't get a look at a senior call-up.  That would indicate that Terlich is gone.  Dunn is borderline given that they keep looking to drop him.  I suspect he'll be nudged into retiring.  Dawes may stay on, but at much reduced coin.  Garland must be in a similar boat to Dunn.  Grimes?  He's played well enough for a call-up, but aside from an emergency gig no luck.  Could be his time too.  JKH is another who must be in the gun.

Out of that lot, we may see some trade action, possibly even FA.  I doubt we'll get enough back in trade to significantly alter our drafting outcomes though.

As at 12 July, my end of year prognosis is:

Delist- Terlich, Dawes, Newton, Michie (r) Max King (r).  Dawes delisting frees up plenty of cash in the cap.

Draft picks pre trade dealing: 28, 46, 64 (use 64 to upgrade Mitch White). Wagner to stay a rookie for 2017.

Contractual arrangements mean JKH, Dunn and Garland stay on.

Question mark over Lamumba.

National draft Pick # 28 & # 46, rookie draft  #9 & # 27.

With Melksham in for 2017, the signs are very good.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
