And that the answer is Yes.

And the next question is "has he agreed to come to Melbourne?".

And that answer is also Yes.

My Foxtel 'info button' says Nate, and asks the question 'who can fix Jessie's kicking?'.

They just spoke about the 'Diamond' Demon defence.

At centre bounces 4 players create a diamond around the opposition inside 50 but our 2 half backs run into the centre bounce to become the out number. David King really rated it. It’s reliant on Gawny being better than he was on the weekend. Means we don’t have to have a sweeper role as it’s created by the half backs.

My interpretation of this is also how hard we are working at selection to get speed (Hunt) or kicking Penetration off the half back line (Vince).

Jonesy coming up next.

Spoke about our aggressive "Demon Diamond Defence" where the two half back flankers push right up at centre bounces, run off their opponents and try and get extra numbers to the contest. Effectively giving us 2 extra at the centre clearance, but leaving us 2 short down back. Would explain the apparent ease of some of the goals we concede.

They were all very positive about it though.

Nathan Jones:

Spoke about the momentum at the club. Said they were disappointed not to be closer on the weekend (as the effort was good) but we played the youngest and most inexperienced team across the competition.

Dogs beat us up in contested ball, but we were still the 4th highest rated contested ball team on the weekend (made me happy).

Jones rates the Dogs as the real deal.

Nath then spoke about the Diamond Defence plan - said all the emphasis is on the contest in the middle of the ground especially against the dogs.

Re: Jesse Hogan's kicking. Jonesy defended him and said his kicking is usually pretty good. Said Jesse is working on it but did kick 7 straight 3 weeks ago. (Well played skipper). They then showed Jesse's run up as junior and it was very similar and Dunstall said he's an efficient kick and won't need to change much - and said it's really not much of a big deal.

Spoke about giving it out to Riewoldt after the Richmond win but didn't reveal much.

Gerald asked him about rotations and about his drop off in output after half time. Nath said he thinks it's more to do with overcoming the neck injury and that he's building into it now.

Goodwin hand over - Nath said it's a really smooth process. Roos handles day to day but they see the game the same way so that's a big help. Goodwin should get credit for us being more attacking. Then spoke about how fun it is to be attacking and kicking goals.

Then he spoke about surfing with Gerald and going surfing with Jesse and James Harmes. Sounds promising for those who like to read WAY too much into those sort of comments.

Seemed very relaxed and happy.

First time i have seen Jonesy the most happiest he has ever been. He is genuinely excited about the future and is enjoying his footy like he's never before.

Well done captain Courageous.

That 'demon diamond defence' scenario makes sense. It certainly fits with the recurring nightmares I'm now having. The same vision over and over where the opposition get a really quick and wide spread from a centre clearance to the wing, meaning those extra numbers we've pushed up can be bypassed kicking long down the flank. Bang bang it's over one of their loose targets inside 50 are having a shot from an uncontested mark.

High risk. On a 'winning' day we might gain two goals then give away one. On a losing day, the reverse.

It may actually be a game plan built to suit our team strengths for many years to come - the combination of midfield clearance guns and some top-rated forward targets.

Not quite working consistently right now as several of those guns are also still kids, but it could be a winning approach long term.

Next time I see the spread-wing-flank-mark-goal horror against us, I'll comfort myself by muttering something like "Enjoy it while it lasts, y' bastards".

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
