Well I'm thinking he has gone back home to talk to his family in person to discuss the issue.. Hopefully to follow Vineys lead by signing up , or not !!

Having watched the full replay, I'd say Michie and Stretch are the two frontrunners to make way for whoever is right to come back in.

If Salem's ready, I'd put him straight back for Michie. it's hard on Viv for him to keep coming in and going straight out of the side but he got his chance and, unfortunately, didn't take it. Still fumbled, didn't get enough of the ball on a night where it was relatively easy to come by. Harsh, but not his night and Salem takes his spot directly.

Stretch would be the next one out IMO, didn't have much impact at all, but it depends on who is fit to take his spot. Dunn might come in to get extra height down back but not sure that's an ideal swap.

I have thought we are far superior than them over the past 2 years but the evidence has finally convinced me they are slightly ahead of us right now.  I am still very confident we have the better/younger list and will be much better than them very soon

We've both beaten Collingwood and gotten close to North, but we played North at Blundstone (never played there before) whilst they got them at Etihad.

We beat GWS, they didn't get close to GWS. Yes, they beat us, but overall I fail to see how the evidence overall establishes they are ahead of us.

Being a Sunday game I cannot see anyone being dropped when the team is named tomorrow. The three to be added to the bench will be ANB, Frost and Terlich in my opinion. I would like to see ANB get a run but it will be a hard thing to drop any of last weeks team. With players like Hunt, Wagner, Stretch we have a lot of speed and run. Loved the places Wagner ran to in transistion to provide a let out link  players running through the corridor. 

Garlett, Kent, Kennedy and Harmes provide speed and run in the forward zone and all players realise the responsibility for,defence starts as soon as the opposition gets the ball no matter where on the ground it is. 

Every player that gets in the team should know that they will get at least two games to,show what they have. They all know that there are good form players at Casey that are looking for a chance to step,up and that the quality of the team will not suffer with the players coming in. Love the pressure that this generates. We have quality running around on each line of the Casey team. 

 

Dunn, Frost and OMac can all cover key defensive positions. Terlich, White and Grimes rounding out a reasonable back 6. Forwards are well covered with Dawes, Hulett, Weed and Max King add in the midfield/forward rotations of AvB, Trengove, Newton and Matt Jones. 

I like the position we are in at the moment and the way Casey are training and playing compliments the senior team style. 

I believe that the style of defensive playing I'll need to evolve to counter the way midfield  sand forwards,are,playing and moving the ball. I think this has driven the emergence of players like Jetta, Hunt and Wagner. They need speed, flexibility and a quick mind to cover the attacking players as they spread into attack in transistion. One thing we could do better all over the ground is to trust our team mates to,do what they need to. So many times I have seen a player leave their player to assist in a tackle which leaves a player free to receive that trust will come.

So started on team selection and ended up on more expanded thoughts on team structure a depth.

I have empathy for those suffering a bereavement, losing a job, getting injured, having their house burn down, and even ordinary players who face an uphill battle to retain their place in the team.

But it doesn't override my capacity to be objective when stating an opinion.

And I certainly wouldn't call it being "emotionally invested".  But for some, apparently. "empathy" equals "emotional investment" ?  For me that draws a silly bow.  That said, it seems some see the profundity in your answer that I don't.

Because we couldn't beat Essendon  in a pre-season game with a team full of top-ups and we couldnt beat them in a home and away game with a team full of top ups. We have played a lot of teams over the years where a key opposition player has been out and it hasn't changed the result one bit. Or someone comes in and plays a blinder like Blake fricken Acres. Or someone who is injured like Nick Reiwoldt who delays his leg amputation by one week so he can come and torment the Demon supporters.

Think you'll find he flew directly to Perth from the Gold Coast....a longer flight than back to Melbourne but nonetheless a flight he was going to take anyway.  And it's an 8 day turnaround this week.  I think the WA trip will freshen him up.

well presumably we would have been absolutely smashed by the 'proper' Essendon side wouldn't we? That means those 'injured' players being out was the difference between a small loss and a big loss. You prove my point by noting that Riewoldt NOT being out injured basically cost us the game. So it obviously counts for something. Get it?

I can't believe I am having to defend my position 'good opposition players being out injured is helpful for us'. Would you also like me to argue the Earth is not flat? I might need to go away again I reckon

Roos stated on AFL 360 that Hogan was playing..or rather that they 8 days, it was a chance for him to see family as arranged earlier in the season, and that way he didnt have to have a week off from playing. He is playing.

I'm not sure whether you were totally serious but it's a great point.  There was an article I read recently (perhaps Inside Football) that talked about the toll that getting on a plane every second week has on a players career.  In the history of the WA teams there is only one 300 game player (Pav 0n 340) and he is 100 ahead of McPharlin, Sandilands, Mundy and others.  Pav has visited the airport 152 times in his career to travel to games.  For WCE Cox played 290 games and only three players have played more than McPharlin.  The article concluded that playing for a WA club could cost up to 2 years on a career.

Have MFC been smart in sending Hogan home from Brisbane and then he has to fly to Melbourne?  It would certainly give him a taste of what he'd have to put up with every second week.

Not necessarily. We have a good track record against EFC and would have performed well against a full strength side I reckon. Its entirely possible, in fact correct if you listen to the utterings from the club after the loss, that we took them too easily because they were undermanned. They on the other hand were playing one of the teams that every team thinks they can beat and lifted accordingly.

Similarly with St Kilda. We clearly didn't give any credit to Reiqoldt and let him run around by himself to take 14 marks and kick 3 goals. Maybe the pre-game planning was around how to exploit a vulnerable Nick Reiwoldt rather than treat him as he deserved to be treated.

5% off your mental game can mean a massive difference and we have shown many times that when we are favourites or when an opposition is weakened we typically lose.

well you did have to because it is superstitious rubbish. I'm surprised EFC aren't on top of the ladder given your argument... which seems to be 'getting injured is good because the opposition takes it easy on you and you catch them off guard'. right. Maybe we should deliberately injure max gawn and see how that plays out. We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not going to waver on suggesting that if Dahlhaus, Bontempelli and Stinger were declared unavailable this week, then our chances of winning the match would increase, not decrease. Call me crazy.

Agree.

One thing that should be said, IMO, is that Dunn should be allowed the odd bad game. We need this bloke down back.

Another thing that should be said, IMO, and for those who have short memories, is that (when he is ready) Trengove is not in our best 22, he is in our best 5.

I think that Kennedy, Grimes and others are (or will be) unlucky. But there are only so many places.

Agree it is a great problem to have.

Nobody takes me up on this, but this season reminds me so much of '87. Emerging team losing games they should win, winning games as underdogs.

If Gawn is on song, and Oliver (somehow for a kid) keeps adding that extra edge to the midfield, we are a strong chance to beat the doggies. They always have to pinch themselves when they get a chance to play at the MCG - (Wow, do we really deserve to be here?)

Why? We didn't look flat or tired, nowhere near as much as we did against St Kilda or Essendon. Today's loss was all about skill, and our lack of it in crucial moments under proper, AFL-grade pressure (i.e. not what we got vs the Suns).
