About time! I've already shifted position on a couple of players this year - namely Matt Jones and Pedersen who I think are close to having earned a new contract.

Dawes, Grimes and Terlich the most vulnerable at this early stage.

I expect a low number of changes this year, relative to the past.

Bump so that this can be updated for Hunt, Harmes, Spencer and Oliver (thanks 'Undeterred').

Would think new contracts for Wagner, Garlett, Kent and Jetta not too far away.  Hopefully the McD brothers also.

Watts has done plenty to prove to coaches he deserves another contract. And he truly wants to stay a Demon. Has earnt that right in my book

Hard to imagine Jones and Trengove not getting new contracts even if only 1 year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Grimes look for a new club as an FA.

This leaves Dawes, Terlich, Newton, Frost and Pedersen in the hot seat. Most of these would be unlucky if they miss out.  Very very difficult list management decisions coming up.

A bit of a left field idea...Dunn up for trade?   OOC 2017.  It might help save the likes of Pedersen, Frost, Newton.

Hate to say it but maybe JKH is tradeable.   OOC 2017. Would really like to see him play a stretch of senior games first but there are plenty of teams looking for small forwards and we are blessed with a few.

Does upgrading rookies count as one of your three draft picks?

Jones Terlich Grimes on shakey ground. Dawes,  Trengove, Newton, Frost and Oscar in the next bracket.

King Wagner White Michie all vying for a list spot. Means 2-3 upgrades I suspect.

List management is hard this year.

What are the asterix for Bugg and Kennedy for again? I'm not sure.

It means I am not certain of their contracts - I am guesstimating.

Well I've seen grammatical faux pas,a plethora of spelling mistakes and auto text wrong words, but demonland has now gone to a new level by consulting the Oxford dictionary!

Can anyone explain how the Collective Bargaining Agreement (also called the CBA or EBA) and individual contracts work together? Does the CBA provide minimum requirements which must be built in to each player's contract? Or does an individual contract supersede the CBA? I wonder sometimes about the amount of huff and puff which goes into CBA negotiations (at least, how much the media claim is occurring) when I'm not even sure of its relevance.

As I understand it the CBA has minimums eg Base Pay (which varies according to whether a rookie, draftee or experienced) and Match Payments (which I think are the same regardless of games played but not sure).  The CBA also covers a host of conditions eg annual leave and payments for superannuation etc

The big ticket $ variations for individual contracts may include:

1  Leadership positions (more for the captain)

2  Promotional work for the Club or Sponsors.  There are also 'Additional Service Agreement' (ASA) usually for marquee players who are drawcards eg Buddy, Judd.  These have taxation concessions so are quite attractive to players.  Not sure if these or part of these are outside the salary cap. Limited to just a few per club.

3  Work for sponsors paid for by a sponsor which is separate to the ASA.  Could be a club sponsor eg Judd had a contract with Visy or a non club sponsor eg supplier of their boots.

Not sure where the boundaries are for 2 and 3

4  Polling position for B & F (which would be based on coaches votes each week but presumably are not only in game performance but also include all the behaviours and disciplines the coaches want re training, off-field, attitudes, teamwork etc etc

5 Winning other club awards eg Best Clubman

6 Maybe the number of games played in a season in limited situations.

7 Any 'premium' the club wants to give a player above the minimums.  This is how clubs are able to stagger contract payments to front-load or back-load contracts to suit their salary cap and list requirements.

The 2015 average payment was around $325,000 (not sure if this includes rookies, I suspect not) and about 90 players earnt over $500k.  I think the salary cap atmo is $10m per club ie $180m.

For details of CBA:  http://www.aflplayers.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/CBA-2012-2016-FINAL.pdf  This is currently being renegotiated.  The AFLPA is going for a % of 'Total Revenue' amount for distribution to players altho according to Patrick Smith in The Australian today, this is totally doomed.  He puts a convincing case.

If rpfc had a dollar for every time I came to this thread, he'd be rich and I'd be broke (btw. well done as always).

I'm often pondering what the list changes will be and I guess it ultimately comes down to who's available to us in the trade period and who wants to stay or explore.

I know we need a minimum of three national draft selections and I presume we'll attempt to target at least two players via trade (e.g. Hurley and Prestia types).

I presume the club will attempt to re-sign Garlett, the McDonald brothers, Kent, Watts, Jetta, and hopefully Trengove.

Of the main list, I'm predicting Terlich (1), M. Jones (2), and Grimes (3) to be the first three to go and Newton (4) to get demoted to the rookies.

Of the rookies I'm predicted Max King (1), White (2), and Michie (3) to lose their spot.

Wagner has been great this year and deserves a promotion but I'm not sure on the room, I have a feeling the rules changed a couple years ago allowing a little more flexibility regarding the numbers of main listed players and rookies, can someone please confirm or inform me of this?

Finally that fifth spot on the main list will likely come from one of Dawes, Pedersen, or Frost depending on that flexibility of spot numbers (mentioned above).

Dawes will likely take a very large pay cut so we can try and secure Hogan so it will be interesting to see if he wants to stay. If Frost keeps up that defensive game he showed on QB I can't see him being demoted or delisted, and Pedersen usually challenges for Dawes' role so his time may be up if he can't re-take that position.

Obviously these are my predictions and some players may want to explore their options elsewhere, and clearly I have excluded the additional complexities of direct trade options.

Would like to know your predictions and who you think will have their heads on the chopping blocks at years end or who may be used as trade bait.

Seeing this post again reminded me of a newspaper article yesterday that JKH has started following the official Carlton FC Instagram.  It cheekily posed the question of him going there next year as the reason.

With Kent, Kennedy, Garlett doing so well it may be difficult for JKH to break back into the team as a small fwd.  Would be happy for him to go if he can become a regular 22 somewhere else.

June revision: Jones, Terlich, Grimes and Newton to go. I think with Watts settled as second ruck (who saw that coming?) we only need one of Dawes or Pedersen to hold fort until Weideman or Hulett step up. Early on it was definitely Pedersen but Dawes looks in really good nick at the moment which throws a spanner in the works. I think Dawes is the better player, but also possibly a bigger breakdown risk. Interesting conundrum.

Love this aspect of footy!

Also follows port Adelaide and Adelaide. Very unlikely that it means anything. Doubt he would be that obvious but also think he might get better chances elsewhere

Agree re: Matty Jones, Terlich, Grimes & Newton.

I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up keeping both of Dawes & Pedersen (Dawes 2 year deal, Pedersen 1) just to allow Weideman & Hulett plenty of time of physically develop before to much is expected.  Pedersen's ability to play in defence also helps this as I wouldn't be at all shocked if we traded Dunn for steak knives at seasons end.

There's some pre-planning to happen here surely... Who can/do we delist/move-on eos 2016... who can/do we delist/move-on eos 2017  etc

I cant see us making wholesale changes this year ( or next ) ... no mass clearouts.  Might only be 5-6 names change come this season's end.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
