Geez dont carlton look a different team. Look muck faster, playing on, tackling pressure has been great and if they had kicked straighter they would be leading by more. MM is in the SEN box doing special comments. Wonder what he is thinking.

Interesting Bolton hasn't felt the need to spend a season building their defensive mind sets to reduce the scores against like us. He has just gone with the modern game plan of taking the game on, moving the ball quickly, running in numbers and tackling and chasing when you haven't got it. It looks simple when it works but we have made it look very complex and difficult.

I really don't like the way the umpires are now ruling on the deliberate out of bounds. A Carlton player just got pinged after the ball was followed to the boundary by a Richmond player who intentionally made no effort to get the ball when he quite obviously could have.  The umpire asked the boundary ump if the Richmond player had touched the ball, and when the answer was "no", called deliberate. Surely the fact that the ball was ushered out by the Richmond player (who could have taken control of the ball) should mean it was the Richmnd player who deliberately let the ball go out of bounds and who should have therefore been penalised.

I have realised I have paid little attention to the rules in the off season. Firstly as noted by others, completely forgot about the sub rule going and this new deliberate out of bounds rule. That is just confusing.

Bolton has given Carlton a very basic plan to work with so that they can compete in games.  They are basically playing 1-1 defensively then when they get the ball they do a quick switch to the open wing and run like hell to provide options ahead of the ball.  Tonight showed that it is an effective way to keep in the game, but they didn't have the class to finish the job.  A lot of their ball movement into the forward 50 reminded me of Melbourne 2 years ago when our only plan of attack was the high long bomb and hope like hell someone marked it.  I'm fairly sure we'll see them get smashed by the better sides in much the same manner as well. 

Richmond on the other hand showed us that they are still weak in the same areas.  They don't like physical pressure.  If a team sits off them they can execute freely, but if you hit them hard and don't give them room to breath they tend to fall apart.  Should be very interesting when we play them.  Our game right now could have been designed specifically to upset them. 

On to more important matters now.  How good were the Socceroos tonight?   7-0, and could easily have been 10 or more goals if we hadn't hit the post so often.  We saw a number of our younger players stepping up and showing that they are ready to take up spots in the starting side as well.  Talk about developing depth, we have half a dozen world class attacking mids fighting for three spots, a ready replacement for Timmy Cahil about ready to go and two captains who are basically clones sharing the defensive mid duties.  The only real issue the side has is settling the right and left back spots.  Really looking forward to Tuesday Night.

That was one of the most one sided soccer matches I have ever watched. I'm not sure Tajikistan are a good measure for how good the Socceroos are to be honest.
