Jesse Hogan and his kicking for goal (merged thread)

So now that Oscar has proven him wrong, we can only assume that picket has tried to move on to something else to take the focus off that thread?

Nice try.

Edit - and, just for the record, Hogan will sort himself out.  He's 20.  Josh Kennedy had the same problems and he's going fine now.  We get ourselves worked up over nothing.

He also has one hand (his left?) far too high up on the ball. Could be an issue with him dropping the ball with his left hand to his right boot. He runs on an arc when he's 40+ out too meaning he swings his leg across his body trying to get extra distance which results in hooking the ball. It's all round a horrible action/technique and while it may "come good" both he and the coaches would be derelict in their duty if they didn't try to rectify it.

He would be wise to watch Peter Mc Kenna's Flawless goal kicking routine , who for mine was the most dead eye, natural precision goal kicker in History. Hardly ever missed from any distance, on any angle! A genious!!

Also, a great fellow!

He could actually do well to look at that guy who debuted in his place last week and kicked a couple, if it isn't beneath a 'superstar' to learn from a one gamer.  Beautiful routine, approach and action from the third generation player who escaped the clutches of Collingwood.

McKenna was on SEN a few weeks ago talking about this very thing.

Said it drives him mad watching most goal kickers these days. They spin the ball in their hands as they walk in. They move it from side to side. Their run up is at crooked angles.

Walk/run in in a straight line at at the target, drop the ball vertically down to your foot, keep your hand on it as long as you can, leg goes straight back and straight through. Goal.

I'm very confident Jesse will be a star for us.

But couldn't help but notice how sweet the set routine for goal from Moore and McCartin this weekend. Flawless and effective.

Peter Mckenna's kicking action was flawless. Played in the days when Big Grandstands didn't exist

Wind was a huge factor

Can someone upload some examples of Peter Mc Kenna at his best!?? I can remember how effortlessly he slotted them from 60 m, no problem! Timing is everything!

Maybe Hogan should tell his agent to get ffd and just sign a contract for 3 years at a decent price with us. I am willing to cut him some slack but really he is not delivering, has a suspect action and as has been mentioned elsewhere we have actually performed better in our forward setup when he wasn't there.

That doesn't mean we don't want him or need him, I think we just need clarification for him and us, the club so we can move on. Given our other young talent, he and his agent needs to understand that he is not that special, not on current form anyway.

A 20 year old key forward with 39 goals is not delivering?  Sheesh.

His second half of the year has been underwhelming, there is no doubt about that.  Whether he is carrying a few niggles, or just totally down on confidence, we aren't seeing the Hogan of last year or of early 2016.

But, he's a kid.  They ALL have these periods and, as you say, we need to cut him some slack.  To suggest he isn't 'delivering' is disappointing and short sighted to say the least.

He's a young key position player in his second year, not many key position players constantly play good football in their first few years. He rarely gets out marked and brings the ball to ground if he doesn't grab it himself, he takes the number one backman each week and his field kicking is above average to elite.

The kid is a gun and we will miss him if he left, in saying that, I still don't understand why commentators/journos keep going on about his contract, he's contracted for another year, why should he re-sign before the end of next year? I wouldn't if I was in his shoes, even if I knew I wasn't going to leave the club I'd hold out until the middle of next season at the least.

So you're saying that his field kicking and shots at goal inside 40m are bad? And I'm talking about on average, not after one bad game. I'm fairly certain I could look up a bad game from Dunstal and Locket and state they were crap kicks too in that case.

Hey Wise, love your posts and your support of mfc but Jesse is almost 22 and has been in the system for 4 years  Injuries aside that gives him 3 - 4 AFL preseasons. He should be getting close to his best work.

He will be a star for us but his contemporaries are jumping ahead of him. That is neither good nor bad but it is worth being realistic as to where Jesse sits on the totem pole.

As I said LH, his second half of the year has been underwhelming.  No argument there.  In fact, it hasn't helped that the team becomes very Hogan centric when he is there and that he has worked further up the ground to get his possessions.

I would disagree the players that are around the same age and development - Patton and Boyd are two that come to mind - have gone ahead of him.  He will need to get more confidence in his kicking for goal, and he still makes the odd poor decision with ball in hand, but we KNOW how good he is.  It's not as if he hasn't played good footy already and we are still waiting for it to click.  This is a kid who has put over 80 goals on the board in 2 seasons for a side that has, up until recently, struggled mightily in attack.

I have no doubt he'll fix up these issues sooner rather than later.

his whole body language is

I'm not so fussed about the body language to be honest.

i think it's just frustration, borne out of the fact that he's a supremely confident kid who last year was able to do it all, seemingly without effort, and is now learning that it doesn't always click, even if you are doing all the right things.

Yes there are days when his attitude and body language stinks, but for the most part I think he's worked really hard this year and I expect that's what we'll get going forward as he matures.

I don't think it's as big a issue as we're making it right now, but I really hope it's going to be a focus of attention in the off season. Particularly his kicking for goal 40m+ out. For such a big bloke he doesn't have a huge amount of penetration on his kicks.

Players like Jesse will be always looking to improve though so I doubt it's something he's not thinking about.

Probably the thickest comment I've read in 14 years.

Take a bow.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
