It'd be a case of ignore him at your peril.

As we sadly did with his Uncle Cy.

Another Rioli in the draft. Nephew of Cyril. In the Nth Ballarat TAC side, goes to St Pats. Interesting article by Emma Quayle, one of the few draft watchers worth reading.

Thoughts?Daniel Rioli progressing in the family business

I watched the Allies v Aussie U17 game on live streaming on the AFL website and Rioli was very impressive. He has a lot of Cyril in him.

Question is at what point do you select him? I suspect he's a second rounder but I really haven't seen enough of him.

If we trade away our first and second rounders as many would have, it may be a moot point for us unfortunately.

Interesting prospect. If we were to draft him, what would you do with Jkh? Can't see team balance with rioli,Jeffy and Jkh unless one learns how to play back or extract the footy.

not necessarily depends whats in the trades, Howe would get us a 2nd Rnd Pick. or JW ? an unhappy? Tyson, would gain a 1st Rnd, if Tigers wanted.

they would be forced to compete with one another for spots .

The last indigenous small forward we got from St. Pats Ballarat was Dom Barry BTW.

....the relevance of which is...........?

If there is a suggestion that a school source determines talent or desire or commitment - we got Watts, Salem from BGS. Similarities?

Maybe yours is merely an observation.

You can't ignore silk like that (well you can and we have). Where is he likely to go and are we a chance? Imagine this guy feeding off Hogans crumbs! Please make this happen football gods.

Sounds like an observation to me.

Yep, just an observation but there do seem to be some similarities based on the description below from Emma Quayle's Combine Draft Harvester:-

Daniel Rioli (16/04/1997, 179cm, 65kg. St Marys/North Ballarat Rebels)

Small forward/defender/midfielder

AFL biography: Small forward or defender who is extremely dangerous around goals and very capable overhead for his size. Cousin of Cyril. Really impressed in round three of the championships against Tasmania. Averaged 12.3 possessions (10.3 contested) and 4.7 tackles at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Impressed with his four goals against the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup finals earlier this month.

"Daniel has a bit of x factor about him. He doesn't need too many possessions to make an impact on the game. He's very calm when he gets the ball and he makes some pretty good decisions. It's his first year in the program so he's still getting used to all the requirements, but he's done a good job with that and he gets himself organised. He's played some really good footy for us and the NT this year. You can tell a sweet kick of the footy by the sound it makes off the boot, and he's got that."

Phil Partington, North Ballarat talent manager

I think both are around the same size and light weight and play a similar type of game. According to reports, Daniel Rioli has been testing well at the Draft Combine (I don't think Cyril tested all that well BTW) - perhaps he also has that Rioli Magic - he certainly impressed me in the Grand Final curtain raiser.

JKH has to play better to get a spot?

Why does the fact we have a similar player on our list mean we can't draft another? The Hawks have 3 small forwards Puopolo, Bruest and Riolo and they seem to go alright.

Probably BECAUSE there are 3 !!!

you can, IF there are better than him avail.

IF we were to get a pick for Howe from GCS? (say P-19 end of Rnd 1), would we use it on a Rioli? or is there better out there than him?

as good as Cyril is, I would prefer a Wanganeen type. Cyril whilst incredibly dangerous, is the type of player we rest our laurels on time & again, & so we end up with the Howes & Jurrahs of this world.

give me a SBurgoyne a Wanganeen, or other full time hard workers. a Whelan, a Barry Cable, someone who is all main course, & less sugar & icing. I think is what our needs are at this point.

When we get to topping off the list, we can grab specialists.

#edit; this post sounds like on pouring cold water on this young rioli, & on WJ's posts, which isn't my intent... i don't know anything about this kid at all, but just mentioned my stuff as something to remain alert to at this time in our rebuilding.

Ii don't think I have another full rebuild in me after this one... if it happens again, I think I'll just dig me a hole.

If we draft this Rioli and he turns out half as good as Cyril, I'd gladly consider JKH superfluous to our needs. And I like the potential of JKH btw.

I hate this argument too and it only seems to get mentioned in relation to indigenous small forwards.

The highlight reel highlights the deficiencies of highlight reels.

It shows that Daniel Rioli is a very good attacking footballer with fantastic reflexes and the ability to read the play well but it doesn't show any of the defensive pressure that makes Cyril such a great player for the Hawks.

This is not a knock on him but I'd like to see how Daniel plays when the opposition has ball in hand before making my assessment on how he would go at AFL level.

Daniel's not had a whole lot of exposure. Pressure's not as manic as Cyril's, but not absent. Good pace, without being lightning.

I'd imagine he'll test better than Cyril though, and I can see him playing more midfield in the future. Probably a 3rd round prospect onward, but I think he could develop into a more than handy player.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
