Which of the recent Melbourne failed top draft picks would be stars if drafted by other clubs?

You can't deal in hypotheticals.

All you can say is almost all of our pics were taken exactly where expected by all the other recruiters, draft experts and media at the time. That's a fact.

We are widely known as the poorest team in the AFL for developing players and having a competitive culture. That's a fact.

We have sacked 3 senior coaches in this period recognized as our period of poor development. That's a fact.

We went and hired the best (and most expensive) coach as far as development and culture goes, and then he hired a former senior coach known for his development. That's a fact.

I'm not sure how many facts you need before you see how much they stack up against your "what ifs"?

It doesn't make the selections any better.

The point is the players weren't very good, which is a drafting failure.

As a percentage I would say 90% drafting and 10% development is the cause of our recent problems.

No, the point is they WERE good, and talented, and drafted exactly where expected.

They then didn't develop into what they could have been.

If we had drafted players expected to be 3rd rounders in the 1st round then you'd be 100% correct, but that's not what happened, and no matter what your opinion, that is a fact.

Exactly, but that's through no fault of the club in a development sense.

For those handful of years where we drafted so poorly we looked for the wrong type of player and not players who through their own ability, willingness or physical attributes would improve. No level of club development could improve them, they were just poor choices and every day I wake up and give thanks that Barry Prendergast is no longer involved with our club.

yeah thats how it was wasnt it. He kicked 4 that day but dropped a mark in the goal square on his own with 5 secs to play. Tend to remember the drop more than the 4. But I did think at a certain time he was going to really be something. Good luck to him....he survived the worst of the MFC altho...its true that he nearly died wearing the red and blue.

He wasn't alone in the goal square, though (2:54):

Good effort I thought, Turned his body to get away from the opponent and had to over-stretch for the ball. He didn't "drop it" as much as he just couldn't quite reach it as it fell.

Whose job is it to develop them if not the club and coaches? Why even have development coaches, line coaches, even head coaches if the players are just meant to make it happen all by themselves? Have we got McCartney there just for show?

I also remember the game he made a record 11 fwd 50 tackles.

Of course it's too late after they've already had their prime development years destroyed. The first 2-3 years are when they form their habits, watch their peers and soak in the most coaching.

Garbage post Stuie.

Example Salem.

Example Angus.

Theres another great example of a bloke who's been on our list for six years. Top two in the club for disposal, top three for footy smarts, he had both those traits when he was drafted. The one thing he lacks is the one thing you can't coach, and that's a killed competitive instinct.

There was always a sense with Petterd that he could become a really dangerous player, something creative.

I'm glad he got a few years of AFL football in, after ejecting from the Demons. Enough to at least prove he wasn't a dud, that he just had a couple of weaknesses that stopped him really building a major career.

You don't their first 2-3 years are their most important for development? Really? Wanna ask Roos and McCartney about that?

Ask them what? No ones doubting development is important what people are doubting is that we ruined the careers of above listed players and there's a difference. Salem and Brayshaw are still developing but they came to the club with footy smarts, a desire to compete and they know how to kick the bloody footy. The above listed may of had one or two of those attributes but they didn't have all three, hence they are no longer at our club and failed at other clubs with a better development history then ours. You don't just forget how to kick the footy. Salem and Brayshaw have the three main attributes coaches are looking for. They have been able to impact games from an early age.

As stated we simply stuffed up the drafting.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
