Melbourne coach Paul Roos heralds more onfield changes at Demons

No surprise really - all clubs need to improve their lists on an annual basis and the past month confirms we need more change than most.

Some of our needs are pressing and perhaps should not only be confined to on field change.

Outside of Prestia and Lynch we haven't been linked with many players. There are a number of players looking to move clubs, yet we don't seem to be linked to many.

I'll be interested to see the route we go this off season - are we able to top up with more talent, or do we go back to the draft again? I am hoping we are able to bring in some talent that is ready to go, but I'm not convinced there is enough talent out there that we can get.

It's going to be another interesting off season for us.

I laughed at this: "Melbourne coach Paul Roos has warned club supporters of even more changes to on-field personnel over the off-season".

'Warning supporters" suggests we are going to get bad or disappointing news or be unpleasantly surprised.
Really?
Fact is, we can't wait for the axe to swing on anyone who has a poor attitude, can't follow instructions nor play for the team.

It will be interesting to see if we continue targeting fringe players from other clubs. None of Riley, Michie and Newton have worked out that well. I can understand why we went down that path, but replacing the Rohan Bails and Matt Joneses of this world on the list with players of similar stature won't solve anything.

Bit stiff on Newton there, I think his been okay this year. He's a goalkicker, people forget he had only played 4 games before coming to the club. He is defintly worth persisting with

We haven't been linked with anyone because our club doesn't leak like a sieve anymore. I'm sure we've got a number of players we've spoken to and are interested in. It'll be interesting to see who we get though.

Newton's not the future. He's a down hill skier. He doesn't run the other way.

I'd say these guys are better than playing Terlich, but that's not saying much.

Given we've developed our list over the past two years, we've now got a better standing in the AFL community, which means we should be able to target slightly better fringe players than we were at our lowest ebb. I'd say our FD would prefer one or two more senior recruits (ala Vince and Cross), but if they're not out there, the FD will back themselves to steady the MFC ship with the young blokes we have leading the way.

And games have been over early as the Demons have managed 1.5 in combined first terms over those three weeks, giving away 19.6. By half-time the Western Bulldogs, Blues and Dockers had kicked a combined 35.10 to Melbourne's 8.9.

Disgraceful.

One of the main reasons we still struggle is our list depth, or lack thereof.

Its every bit as important as having some star players.

When we lose a starting 18 player to injury such as Tyson, Vandenberg, Salem etc etc or they are replaced by VFL level players. The list is deeper than it was last year but is still very thin by AFL standards, but after this trade period it will be even deeper. And that will lead to more wins.

This this is the fundamental issue tbh. If we had every one of our best players fit, we'd be competitive with most sides in the comp. But, unfortunately at this stage we have just about zero quality of depth in the list, meaning when someone goes down they're replaced with a Bail, Michie, Newton, Matt Jones etc.

Surely this is some sort of misquote/typo

"I want to finish the season off really well next week. I said to the players come ready to play like you did today – that's what we want next week."

He can't have meant give the opposition a 12 goal start , surely??

Not writing him off but his lack of pace and tank worries me. It became glaringly obvious in an attempted chase yesterday

Michie, I think has shown something the past 2 weeks

I may be wrong but I don't recall us "being linked with" the likes of Cross, Vince, Tyson at this stage of the year when they came to us - is my recall correct?

I think Cross was looking likely from earlier on but Vince and Tyson were out of the blue. I want more of that this year!

Good interview with Mike and Roosy on 360 tonight.

Mike forced Roos to admit he thought some players weren't up to AFL standard . Didnt name names but it backs up the article.

Sadly once again the offseason is going to be interesting for the dees

On a personal note id let Howe and Garland walk via FA to new clubs and get the combined compensation for hopefuly a good pick

Mike was good on afl 360. Him and Gerard just roll off each other and was actually worth watching for once. Wish they made him a full time host with Whately..

This Roos guy is brilliant, to identify so early on that here is still a fair bit of list turnover left to be done.

Presumably the point of the article is really just to soften the supporters up as the club gets ready to move on some familiar faces.

I wonder Howe soon we'll find out which high profile players are headed for the Dawes.

I know we were linked to Cross for a while, but not sure if it was at this stage of the season. We were also linked with a trade with GWS, but Tyson wasn't the player until very late in proceedings.

Seriously, taking the emotion out of it and just looking at it objectively, who in their right mind would want to come here? We might have been able to sucker someone in had we not gone and finished the year with wooden spoon quality

Like he warned us last week to not have negative thoughts before the game? Mr Roos, please, were my negative thoughts at quarter time Sunday really naughty? Did they contribute to the non-winning result, or should we be happy that we were after all runners up on the day?

MS comment on our woeful starts to games and said that it's just not skill based but EFFORT based which Roos agreed with after a few seconds of silence (insert crickets). I think he was actually a bit taken back by the question and wasn't sure how to answer it initially.

Good to c what most of us harp on here about the lack of effort from the players is noticed by the coach.

Roos also said they will address it over the preseason. Wish MS had asked Roos HOW will this be addressed but unfortunately he didn't.

Another preseason of waiting again.

Best episode of 360 for the yr I reckon.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
