MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 19

Featured Replies

Vanders a big loss and I am also in the bring Fitz back camp

It's amazing that even with a relatively healthy squad to choose from Matt Jones still gets games. 28 y/o, unskilled and clumsy. The coaches must see something the rest of us don't.

He played pretty well in the Geelong win, maybe the coaches have a similar role in mind for him this week on the HFF.

Spewing about Vanders!!

Vander looked like he sprained his ankle. Landed awkwardly during marking practice. They might just be icing it to make sure.

Let us all hope that that is all it is.

Get back soon, VDB

In all honestly though Matt Jones!? WTF!? He is not the future. Newton would have been the obvious selection considering he is still young and the need to get games into these players.

Maybe doubts about his fitness dazzle?

Maybe they could have brought Newton in for ANB also.

Give ANB another rest.

Midfield seems a bit light on with VDB out and MJ in.

But what the hell do I know!

This worked last week. get on board Demonlanders.

Perhaps if we all say the Board's prayer:

Our Nathan, who art in the middle,

Hallowed be thy game.

Thy clearing run.
Thy kick to Viney is direct,
As in the game plan.
Give us this day our Bernie Vince.
And forgive us our turnovers,
As we destroy them that wear black blue and white.
And lead us not into hesitation,
But deliver the ball quickly.
For Hogan is the target,

The Demons, take the glory,

For ever and ever.

Amen

VDB out is super disappointing.

M Jones getting a game over Newton likewise.

I guess he'll be put at half-forward or on one of North's runners (Dal Santo?)

Lot's of talk about Fitzpatrick's card being marked at seasons end. Does Matt Jones being selected mean Toump's card has also been marked?

Agree with many about Newton. Would like to see more of him even if it's him starting in the vest.

Paul Roos selection's are all about playing your role. Whilst I don't agree with M Jones in our side on the basis of playing your role like for like (in role not quality) it is not surprising.

I remember Matt Jones playing some important roles as a half forward earlier in the year. While he didn't rack up huge numbers, he was able to limit the influence of guys like Murphy and Enright. Might be moved to Dal Santo this week.

There goes any chance of winning, Vanders was huge against the Pies!

Is Toump injured? Concerned with the lack of talk around him, or even the care levels around here. M Jones getting a run before him can't be good..

Its got to be different strokes for different folks or horses for courses.

we have a squad with different skills and different levels of performance required.

While I would have preferred Fitzy who seems to have performed well at Casey since tunnelball1 and Toump to be considered they are hopefully being developed to be utilised properly to get the maximum return

Have to trust our coaching panel

I like Matt Jones. There, I said it. I hope he plays well.

Me too.

Neither is Newton, I fear.

I'm guessing Jones will play a negating role on Harvey. He's fast and obviously not a super skilled user of the pill, but he's a role player and Roos likes that.

I hope I win tattslotto tonight JTR

The odds are about the same.

It has been said on here time and time again, so some of us must see the same thing as the coaches. Jones is fit, fast, prepared to gut run both ways and most importantly does jobs he assigned. I assume they have a specific role for him to play and as someone mentioned it wouldn't surprise if it was to sit on Harvey.

The other factor in his favour is he has been in the best for several weeks at VFL level and as Roos has been at pains to say they want to see blocks of strong performances in order to get a call up. This factor probably counted against the Toump who has been okay but perhaps die to his head knock a little inconsistent.

Prediction time guys.

North by six goals.

If we kick like the last month ten.

North have too much talent for us at present.

For all the good drafting of the last couple of yrs Newton, Riley and Michie at this stage seem to be a bust.

We still need to get better at drafting IMO.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
