The issue is, P-Man, that it has nothing to do with the top 40 players in a season. By the time they name 3 or 4 rucks, 4 or 5 key forwards, 4 or 5 key backs, a couple of small forwards and small backs, all of which Jones doesn't play in, that leaves around 20 or so midfield positions.

The question you then have to ask is if he is in the Top 20 midfielders. That's when it gets tight.

Nb. Not sticking up for K(no)B, but when you are looking at the number 15-20 spot in a squad, there will always be debate on who should and shouldn't be in there.

Granted, but the player ranked 2nd for disposals and 3rd for clearances has a fair claim to being one of the top 20 midfielders.

Brandon Ellis made the squad ffs. Jonesy was very stiff.

Heart and soul of the Club. Absolutely loyal unlike some others. In the thick of everything and at the bottom of every pack all game every game. Where would we be without Jonesy - an absolute gem.

Never had a fraction of the credit he deserves. And as hard and tough as he is - never stoops to anything untoward. If ever a bloke deserves to wear the revered No 2 - he is the man.

Jonesy you are a super star.

Nathan will soon be on par with MFC legends like Stynes, Lyon and Flower if he isn't already. and like Robbie lets hope gets to play and win Finals at the tail end of his career

Also if he wins the Bluey this season that would be 4 in a row, wow.

Maybe the club should market towards Jones playing finals like they did with Robbie back in the 80's.If anyone deserves it, he does.

This. Last year was his best statistically, and stats alone would have him in the top handful. He uses the ball well (very underrated part of his game). The only knock on him would be to kick 15-20 goals a season rather than 5-10. Easily in the best 20 midfielders last year for me.

I've been pondering this for the last couple of years and still don't know where I sit with it...

Where does Jones sit on our all time list? Certainly not the most talented player to play for the Dees, but it's hard to recall one that played with more courage. Is Jones a name for the 'all time list' or is he a courageous and loyal player when we have been at our very worst?

He's a player I'd happily have an award named after when his playing days are over.

An award?? I'd like to see a whole town named after him... that would have to be the best place on the planet.

Oh... hang on.

It would be an indictment on the club if he were to win four in a row.

Nothing against Jonesey but it would show we haven't improved much at all.

If he starts kicking more goals he will move even higher up the rankings.

Whose really going to challenge him for it? Tyson perhaps? Lumumba maybe? Anyone else would have to be significantly better than they were last year in order to top Jones.

It's possible to make some significant improvement as a team and still have Jones as our best player in 2015.

I agree with your post, except for one thing.

And that is - I think Nathan Jones absolutely gets the credit he deserves, certainly among MFC supporters/players etc. He is loved by everyone at this club.

Nathan Jones is a gun player. Would love to see him win a premiership medal with the Demons. He deserves it after all these tough years.

I see him winning a Fourth Best and Fairest in a row unless Dom Tyson or maybe Jack Viney have stellar years too.

I hope to see Nathan Jones be our second 300 gamer (beating David Neitz on 306 matches) and play over 330+ games for the Melbourne Football Club.

So... if Jones gets #4 he'll be the first ever to do it (consecutively) in 80 years of the award

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
