Couldn't find a thread on this guy so thought I'd start one.

Recently delisted by the crows after a bad run of injuries. Been described as having one of the best set shots for goals. Not a big forward bit still got a bit of size about him. He's only 23 so he theoretically should be coming into his prime, and we'd be able to pick him up for nothing.

Thoughts?

I remember there being some hype about him the year he was drafted. Along with Watts he was one of the top rated talls, Johnston was a AA CHF at the under 18 championships (Watts was listed a FF for this year).

Has been crippled with injuries, but after stints at 2 clubs it is obvious his body just might not be up to the pressures of AFL football. He wasn't able to crack the crows side when he was fit, and looks as though his injuries have held him back to the point where his career may be done.

Would look at a rookie list spot, but I would not be expecting him to ever reach the heights that many though he would reach when he was drafted.

I agree with Adzman. He was a very highly rated KPF in that draft along with Watts and the Mitch Brown who went to Geelong. None of them ever settled down and lived up to their hype which suggests that it might not be such a wise thing to go early with key forwards in the draft.

If he came to us and got the same opportunity Dawes did this year then we'd have a 40+ goal kicker compared to 20, I'd like to give him that opportunity.

I think there are question marks over his character. Not sure he does the hard yards. I'm not in the know, just what I've heard from Sydney and Adelaide supporters.

He is too one dimensional, lead up 3rd tall with little scope to be anything else. He doesn't have the strength to play KPP and consistency goes missing in games because of this fact. Plenty of other players who deserve another shot before him.

Anyone who brings up the Fact he was AA under 18 CHF, need I remind you of a Lucas Cook? Cause so was he. Under 18 AA doesn't mean as much when it comes to talls.

One dimensional lead up forward and in a good team no more than a 3rd tall who can't pinch hit in the ruck, great set shot but injury prone. Unless he can turn himself into a Gunston type (but he's not as quick, not as good marking, not as good a gut runner) or a true FF he's really a Crameri type at best and a complete bust at worst.

Wasn't Spangher delisted twice?

True, but he has far more strings to his bow than a bloke who can only play as a third tall forward. Are you saying Johnston is worth getting?

Wasn't Spangher delisted twice?

A role player go can play 3 handy positions on the field as a genuinely mature recruit surrounded by superstars. Yeah, they have heaps in common hey?!? Like err....... Being delisted by 2 clubs and, err..........

We are not the Hawks, yet anyways!!

Roos picked him up when he was at sydney so he will definitely know alot about him.

And also let him go so he wouldn't rate him.

Not a bad highlight reel (6 goals) especially the sling tackle on Grimes! He certainly knows how to find the goals!

No John Longmire let him go.

Ahh my mistake, for Tony Armstrong too apparently.

Not at all, I have really no knowledge of Johnston or his potential. I was more saying that you'd want to be more sure that he's not a good fit for us than simply 'two other clubs have said no'.

Bit small and slow and doesn't do much besides lead, mark and goal. I feel the game has gone passed those players.

If we don't get a key forward in the draft then maybe we consider him for a rookie spot.

But our list will likely have:
Key fwds: Hogan, Dawes

Fwds/ruck: Pedersen, Fitzpatrick,, ?Max King

Rucks who can sit in the square: Gawn

If we add McCartin/Wright then Johnston on the rookie list ends up just getting in the way at Casey unless he drastically improves or we have significant injuries.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
