Jack Trengove re-injures his navicular (2014) - trade deal off

I think the question isn't what Trengove is worth on the open market, but what he's worth to us. He's 23 midfielder, with great leadership qualities, and - injury permitting - will likely play a reliable 100+ more games with this club. In other words he's exactly the kind of player we'd be looking to draft in to the club under other circumstances. I want to see improvement in this club quickly, which is what Trengove can contribute to next year and beyond, presuming he's over the worst of his injury troubles (which would seem to be the case if he's passed the medicals at Richmond). Taking pick 12 to the draft would just be crap-shooting, and I'm not sure we're a club which has the luxury of taking gambles on players who may or may not come good 3 or 4 years down the track.

Unless there is another experienced player we're looking to trade in, the fact remains that - for us - Trengove is a more valuable commodity than pick 12.

Everyone universally agrees that for MFC to move up the ladder it needs to completely alter the constitution of it's list. It's bemusing there is outrage at upsetting the status quo when that is practically what is attempting to be achieved.

The list is unbalanced and the constitution of it needs to change so that we can play FINALS again.

These are clever football men in charge.

A good Melbourne player is not necessarily of AFL standard. Look at 2nd and 3rd in the 2013 B and F. We are rooted if we don't compare our list to the best in the league.

Statement from the club

MELBOURNE is considering trading former captain Jack Trengove and pick 23 to Richmond for pick 12.
Trengove has battled foot problems in the past two seasons and played just two games in 2014.
The 23-year-old had an operation on the navicular bone in his foot and spent time away from the club this season to recover.
Trengove was the second pick overall in the 2009 AFL National Draft and had a brilliant start to his career however his form tailed off after he was named captain in 2012.
He was the youngest captain in the game's history but only lasted two seasons in the job before relinquishing the spot to concentrate on enjoying his football.
The Demons are aware he is a popular and loyal figure and remained coy about whether the deal would eventuate.
"We said after our last game to our playing list that we would look at all avenues to improve our list. Richmond came to us with a potential deal, Jack is aware of this and all parties will now take some time to consider our options," a Melbourne spokeperson said.
However with the Tigers looking to bolster their midfield and being a club on the rise, Trengove might be recharged by a new environment.

Happy to give up both ex captains, Trengrove and Grimes and 20 something for 12, time to move forward and recruit someone who can play, sure both are good blokes and may sign the back of your jumper, love the club like Mitch and Spud Frawley, but both have little ability and 12 is a bargain, would even throw in Dawes...

Its not like the guy has asked to be traded. He isn't even that sure if he wants to. Obviously the kid still wants to help the club and yet we are thinking of offloading him?

I will be so disappointed in Roos and the rest of the staff if this goes ahead. Unless we have a big name player ready to come you don't just trade out a pick 2 who in 2011 showed he could be a future star of the game.

I sympathise with your view however we compete on the open market, so it is entirely relevant what he is worth on the open market.

I think its likely that what we can get either out of pick 12 or a deal involving same will be of greater value to us, and may get us a step closer to competing in that market.

No. Statement from Peter Ryan at AFL.com.au using lifted quotes from Josh Mahoney that he gave the heraldsun.

That it goes up on our website and is tweeted by our communication staff may or may not mean anything.

No doubt we are putting the feelers out on this deal. It's not done but it is truly under consideration. But I wouldn't read too much in to that article.

Plenty of clubs looking to buy into the first round will be looking at us differently if we can package pick 3 and 12 together for a player.

No surprise this has been released right before the weekend, so clubs can ponder their options.

True DD, but given his recent injuries and form from 2012 onwards, maybe he never will get back to that form?

I'm OK with trading former high picks that, for whatever reason, haven't produced at the expected level.

I love Trenners as a Bartel type, but being honest, how would Jimmy have gone if he had been drafted by us? And if not productive as a mid/forward threat then what is he exactly? I am not a fan of the wide-eyed enthusiasm for any single player - especially when we have zero players featuring in the media top 50 players in the AFL.

Be ruthless and win. Or be tame and try to improve in slow increments.

I vote the former.

Maybe its to help the Ryder deal get thru: An elite Port player to Dees for pick 3 and 12 and one of those Port sends on to Essendon (with their) 17 for Ryder.

Or something similar to help get the Beams deal thru altho I can't think of anyone I would want from the pies.

Make it Ollie Wines then so many Demonlanders would need something else to whinge about!

I reckon Roos and co. have gone to Adelaide fielded Pick 2 and 23, they've told us it isn't enough but we don't want to get rid of pick 3 too, so Richmond come into this already being interested in Trengrove, we begin talking to them and 12 has came into talks, but I still don't want us getting rid of pick 23 (Or Trengove for that matter).

Only way i'm good with this is if it means we land Dangerfield, and I mean Dangerfield, not Dylan Shiel, not Adam Treloar, not Dion Prestia, Patrick Dangerfield and Patrick Dangerfield only, and we have to keep Pick 23.

If it comes down to it I thank Trengove for his services but, would still rather we worked out a way for Danger to come with Trengove staying.

But, In Roos we trust.

Nice bloke is Trenners, top football he hasn't delivered in 5 seasons. Grimes is a bit that way too. Trenners is never going to win us a game or be an all Australian every year. He doesn't play often or well enough to be a true onfield leader. Jones has that in truckloads. Yes trade him and wish him good luck. Let Roos get on with the rebuild ...................or suffer even more !

I think people like the idea of what Trenners could be for this club, based on his first season form. Sadly it's been missing for a really long time.

I was relieved when it looked like an injury had been behind it, and I looked forward to seeing him regain his form next year... but if this is the first step to getting an established A-grader to our club, the decision is easy for my liking.

Roos PJ and the coaching staff have been bought in from the outside..

Trenners has hardly played and when he has it has been average at best.................We all know the list must be improved, Quickly.

If we are talking of trading past co-captains, l would rather trade the current one in Grimes to the Tigers so that he can be reunited with his brother! Surely we should see Trenners play a year under Roos after he has had a year off through injury.

I distinctly remember howls from supporters that Trenners deserved to be dropped for some of his awful output earlier this year. I know it ended up being injury related... but we also have to consider that he can't get back to his best following his surgery. That particular injury can be career ending. I'd love to see him get back to his best and become the player we all hoped he could be, but I can't help thinking this is part of the scar tissue (thanks to Neeld's moronic captaincy decision) that Roos is trying to excise from our list.

I thought we were gonna use 21 on Lumumba?

No we weren't, it will be a three way swap involving the Cats, the Pies and the Dees.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
