B59, it's not MFCSS at all. It's a group of supporters, me included, that have no idea what this plick is going to get paid. It's supporters, me included, that have zero confidence in the AFL making a decision that favours a lowly side that will put the powe clubs offside. It's supporters, me included, that have put up with shlt for decades that have mostly gone against us. I'm at the stage where I just always look at the shlt side of the coin, because generally that's what has landed face up. It allows me to appreicate it if something actually goes our way.

And I highly doubt you know how much the Hawks are offering, and if it is in fact more than Geelong. I think you are just throwing that out there because your "source" had you convinced that Geelong was his destination, and tried to convince this forum for months that you "know". If it were me, I'd go to Hawthorn for much less than what Geelong were offering.

My mail is the Hawks have actually offered Frawley a fairly attractive offer and it is not just a case of come and play for the prospects of playing in a Premiership. Cats are aging but lets not forget they have also got a lot more game time into their kids than the Hawks have and Burgoyne/Mitchell/Hodge/Lewis/Lake/Gibson/Hale are hardly in a different boat then Enright/Kelly/Bartel/Johnson/Mackie. There really is very little between the sides and a lot depends upon the recruiting.

Frawley is a lot younger than Lake so it's not like he only has 2/3 years left to grab that elusive flag. Frawley will be paid accordingly, not as much as he would be with us, the Dogs or Saints but the Cats or Hawks will give him $500k p/a or some deal which averages out to that over 4 years so fairly confident we will meet the Band 1 criteria.

I have never suffered from MFCSS

Purely based on speculation that the Hawks pay unders.

As an aside there is a huge MFC contingent at Hawthorn

I hope it is also a long contract, that will also help us.

If it's 4 years at around 450k-500k it wouldn't be enough to get #3

And the Hawks get to stay up the top for ever...

Remember Lee Colbert, how did that work out for him

AFL.com.au understands Hawthorn expressed interest in Frawley but were deterred by the terms on offer and decided to move out of the race.

The Hawks then re-entered the race after it was clear Frawley remained interested in the possibility of joining the club.

Hawthorn stepped up efforts recently but was unable to deal with the decision properly until after the Grand Final.

That would indicate the offer was less than Geelong, maybe.

Boy that Hawthorn deal was put together quickly! Clarkson said they hadn't spoken to him on Monday.

He also never went near a pack or physical contest all year.

I'm cross with myself for thinking something fishy has gone on here as I know Hawthorn wouldn't plan to poach a player.

What I don't get is that...

The AFL has come out and said "we'll notify teams within 24 hours of their compensation when they lose a player to FA"...

But then how is that consistent with the ruling that acquiring other FAs then waters down your compensation?

Could we not just let Frawley go, get awarded pick 3, then a day later sign Malceski as a FA?

I don't think they've thought this through...

And the watering down of compensation is currently the biggest impediment to FA working for the "weaker" clubs.

I thought this too however I am thinking they will notify the club what the compo will be however it will not actually be awarded until the end of the FA period. Then if a club signs or loses a subsequent FA the compo will be reviewed.

We've got pick 3. It's fine. Calm down everyone. They make it up as they go along anyway. If a rule needs to be changed, it will be.

Pretty straightforward really isn't it.

if we don't I'm finished with the sport

I agree. Losing Frawley to a side who just won the flag.

Having Clark retire due to depression, only to come back months later to join the most successful side of the modern era.

MFC are expected to stand on our own two feet, but the AFL need to be realistic about it.

The compensation should include a cost to the destination club. If round 1 compensation is appropriate the destination club lose their round 1 tip etc. This way other clubs don't get pushed down as well.

How can the top club collect the bottom clubs best KP Defender who is only 26 and this not be band 1. KP Players don't grow on trees. We have already been screwed by the system, FA was never meant to deliver this, was never meant to create a 2 tier system. I hold my breath now as the AFL delivers us a knock out blow.

Still a bit problematic, Fa and Trade periods overlap, doesn't leave much time at end

FA begins Oct 3, Trading begins Oct 6

FA ends Oct 13, Trading ends Oct 17.

I have just been on the AFL app and participated in the voting on what Frawley is worth. Although i voted pick 3, 82% voted that he was only worth a second or third round pick..I hope that the AFL doesn't take heed of the results on their own App [or let us hope that Demonlanders get onboard and vote enmasse in favour of pick 3.]!

Spot on - I've never understood the watering down concept. Not only do we not have the incentive to go after any free agents of our own, we are actually screwed if we do. It is just a hopeless system.

They're far better off just making it open season. I know that is likely to end up in a situation like the NBA, where eg Cleveland had literally one or two players contracted for the coming season, but at least everybody is competing fairly for talent.

We are trying to improve with both hands tied behind our backs.

How to fix free agency. Top 4 teams can't take free agents (DFA excluded).

Bottom 4 teams don't have their compensation diluted if they lose a free agent then bring in another.

There must be incentive to improve.

Posted

No one should have their compo diluted if they lose a FA and bring in another-that's the part that makes FA unfair to "feeder " clubs, it flies in the face of fairness and sets up a market that is only for the strong to benefit from.

Abolish that and FA is sorted.

The AFL should have something set up where teams that are in the bottom 8 for x amount of years get an bigger salary cap then the more successful teams above them.

Instead of calling it COLA allowance we can call it a crapa allowance.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
