Potential Trades [Warning: Reading this thread may self-destruct]

Then they will stay where they are and have no chance to win a flag in the current changing environment. You have to trade to get and you have to make the hard decisions.

It's a really unfortunate thing but the old idea of building a team and club on loyalty and jumper no longer exists . We have rapidly headed down the US path where it's more about the player than the club. This change has happened in the blink of an eye, the last major change like this happened when Barassi left Melbourne and professionalism started to creep into the game. We were slow on the uptake then, we can't be now.

I don't like this new football world at all, but because I don't like it, it doesn't mean it will go away. Bomber Thompson alluded to this last night on 360 and he's right on the money.

It's up to the clubs to provide the right environment in order to keep their good players ... and, even that is often not enough to keep a player. Money talks. Franklin & Ablett both left excellently run clubs.

The clubs will need to re-sign their "potential" free agents with longer contracts in order to not lose those free agents at a later date. The same can be said for any top player really - whether he's a free agent or not. We're going to see lengthier contracts as the years roll on.

Welcome to the new AFL and one thing's for sure, it ain't going back to the way it was.

Sydney will want their pick 6 at the very least I reckon, he's a great young player.

Correction - he's a great young prospect.

If he was a great player, he'd be in Sydney's side week-in, week-out.

He's got genuine ball-winning ability and a fantastic work ethic - but his kicking efficiency at the moment lets him down.

He's a bit like our Jack Viney at this stage and most likely will become a great player, but both need to improve their disposal before the tag "great player" is handed out IMO.

Sydney will want pick No.6, but whether they will get it for him is still of debate. I'd reckon his value would be pick No.6 and in return the Swans give up their second-rounder to Blues (ie: pick 35-37).

I live with depression every day of my life, I learnt about it in therapy for 25 - 30 years still now am learning about it, as I learn in other peoples examples, & then see mine.

I've have had it most likely since around 8 - 11 yrs of age, reactive depression, social phobia, anxiety etc. most people can't see it much of the time.

it can interfere with your focus when stressed out, but I cope OK I guess.

this last 15 months has been really tough, moving around the country, just me & little mate.

All the best mate. I am not sure Demonland or the Dees would be helping. Hopefully we are all better soon.

Hey, this might sound odd to some...but I would seriously suggest meditating. It quiets your mind, so that you don't think shitty thoughts.

I would rather keep both picks and get Petracca and Brayshaw if Saint Kilda go tall.

Would be nice but one pick looks to definitely be on the trade table. We also need immediate experience

every draft has high quality mids, not every draft has key talls like McCartin and I think that will be where their decision is made, the rebuild is going to take time, talls take time and quality mids are a lot easier to find, I think they would regret it if they passed McCartin up for a mid

Agree. A mad Saint supporter I know believes they will take him. We live in hope

I agree. Toumpas looks okay to me.

His greatest crime appears to have been in being selected ahead of Ollie Wines.

Hardly his fault, and not the only player in that draft to be selected above him.

In fact, it'd be interesting to know who Port would've selected with pick 4 if they were in our position. As we all know, all the clubs had Toumpas going ahead of Wines on draft day.

That Wines would now be selected ahead of most in the league is a completely different issue.

Edit. Typo

I would still love to see the best of Toump. Has had a bad run with injuries. Matthew Lloyd rated him the best player in that draft.

In regards to blease for Robinson talk. Malthouse came out and said (as reported on SEN a while back) he will be delisted if we cant find a trade for him.

So pick 100 should do it. or if we plan to delist Blease a straight swap. This should be very simple to figure out.

I'm pretty sure Port bid the pick they used on WInes for Jack Viney in the F&S bidding... So even they obviously didn't rate Wines as the best of the draft.

Funny how things have turned out so far.

I reckon JV played as well if not better than OW in their first game last year. OW gets a rising star nomination and goes from strength to strength. Just shows what a difference the quality of the side you're playing in can mean for a young player.

Anyway, i like Toumpas. He'll be right.

Interesting to read Emma Quayle's verdict that we are keen to snare Dylan Shiel or Adam Treloar from GWS.

Obviously either would be a huge coup for us and having Dom Tyson at the club will obviously help our chances.

I can't imagine Treloar being let go or wanting to go after his breakout season.

But the Giants may view Shiel as expendable and assuming we get pick No.3 as Frawley compo, it would seem a fair deal to me, but I'd also ask for their round 3 pick in return (about 40) - just so we can get back into third round.

Given that Roosy is also mentioned as quite keen on Brayshaw (possibly even more so than Petracca) then we have a chance to set ourselves up with a midfield that is deep, young and on par with most sides.

I would be happy with a Clark for O'Brien trade (both high risk) and if the Swans win the flag, I reckon we are a huge chance to nab Malceski, given we can offer him a far more lucrative deal than Buddy's Swans. I am worried that Macleski as a FA will water down the Frawley compo, so I'd offer our second rounder, which may seem unders for an AA defender, but he is 30 with dodgy knees and is a three-year proposition at best.

I am still hopeful we get Billy Stretch as a third-rounder F/S and the draft gurus seem a little divided on whether he's 2nd or 3rd rd.

We also need to add a tall defender to our list and Frost would seem handy and suit those needs. But to get him we would most likely need to get back into the second round and that means trading Watts (pick 25 to Blues) and/or Toumpas (pick 33-35) to Port.

That would give Roosy five new ins for Round 1 - Shiel, Frost, Malceski, O'Brien and Brayshaw - and six if you include Hoges.

And it would be a great mix of youth and experience.

On the draft front, obviously 98% of us know little about the actual players as yet, but I have two favourites that I'm hoping come our way.

1) Liam Duggan - we need a long left-footer for our back six - and the Western Jets midfielder has played a lot of footy down back and takes the kick-ins. The problem is that he seems to be rated around pick 10-20 - so we'd need to be extremely lucky and because he has a weapon foot, I can't see him slipping to 2nd rd.

2) Oscar McDonald - I always reckon that once you know a bit about an older brother, Tom, you can get a gauge on what development is likely to take place. Oscar is apparently starting to blossom (latish like Tom) and we know he comes from good country stock, so I'd reckon he'd be a great option for us as an early third rounder - assuming he still falls that far. If we did get pick 33-35 for Toumpas, then I'd be happy with us taking him there.

Great post.

Reasonable trade suggestions that add to our list while not being outrageously tilted in our favour (see Clark for pick 7)..

thanks Redleg, having it so young it becomes part of the furniture. up against it all the time blurs the lines into everyday life.

Its just another challenge, luckily I like challenges, & love to fix repair things. or improve them. perfectionist & competative & creative, theres a challenge.

I try to help fix this club until it kills me. this is why I can see things that others don't about our club & its positives & its negatives. because i have to learn the identify both in my every day life. And I Have to be honest with myself to learn.

I had to learn to put the Demons losses into perspective decades back as I would be devastated every week & depressed, so I had to learn to back off & keep it more like a hobby rather than so passionate.

So I'm an arms-length back emotionally now, for my health. but your right, the Demons are a battle on they're own, & a challenge for me to see them get it right.

thanks moneider, i did that after struggling thru my mums passing, it was fantastic. but I prefer to do it in a class, & don't bother when things aren't that bad, as I like to keep busy.... the Irony. I'm scared of doing nothing & being still ???

but meditating in a good class & environment is great.

we only had to be sure that both GWS & GCSuns didn't bid on J Viney so we could get him in Rnd 2... which we did. but we went for the skilled player which in time may prove right decision, but atmo we feel the loss.

lets hope the Toumpas family don't take all this discussion about their boy to heart.

in the interest of providing unrealistic trades for shits and giggles, here's my effort.

Pick 2 and 21 for dangerfield.

Pick 3 for Shiel and Frost (would prefer treloar but think gws would want more)

or alternatively

pick 3 for gc pick 8 and 14 (blatently stolen from another poster)

-> pick 8 for mitchell

-> pick 14 to be used at the draft

so out goes; pick 2, 3, 21,

in comes; dangerfield, shiel and frost

or

dangerfield, mitchell and pick 14

Posted (edited)

My highly/ ridiculously unlikely, unrealistic draft / trade situation is:

Dees get a start of first round Priority Pick behind our first selection, Frawley leaves and we gain a band 1 compensation pick directly behind our first selection.

Stretch must be taken with our early second round pick under the F/S rule (however would love it to be in the third round if we lucked out).

We have three first round picks at 2,3, and 4, plus a 3rd, 4th, and 5th round pick in the National Draft.

Pick 2 & Trengove get traded to Adelaide for Patrick Dangerfield.

Pick 3, 4 & our Third Round pick get traded to GWS for Jeremy Cameron, Pick 5, and Sam Frost.

Jimmy Toumpas is directly traded to GWS for Jonathan O'Rourke, GWS would suit Toumpas with a reduction of external pressures, media spotlight, and Wines comparisons. Alternatively O'Rourke has expressed a desire to return to Victoria.

Pick 5 is traded to Sydney for Tom Mitchell, also relieving their somewhat bursting salary cap.

Use our early fourth round pick to trade/ downgrade to late fourth or early fifth round pick to get the above deals over the line. Mitch Clark (with his desire to leave) is also put up for trade bait, either he or the draft selections obtained are also used to help get a deal above over the line.

IN: Dangerfield, Cameron, Mitchell, O'Rourke, Frost.

OUT: Pick 2, Pick 3 (PP), Pick 4 (Frawley), Third Round Pick, Trengove, Toumpas, Clark.

Two other draftees (compulsory with the addition of Stretch) are selected late in the National Draft.

Edited by ignition.

Our remaining late 3rd round pick (next in line) is used to draft Stretch under the F/S rule, we then select the compulsory two other draftees late in the National Draft.

Father-son bidding occurs immediately prior to the trade period, so if we have committed to use our original third round pick on Stretch, then we can't trade it.

Dag nabbit, I knew something didn't seem right about that.

Cheers, i'll fix it up and alter my "My highly/ ridiculously unlikely, unrealistic draft / trade situation is" ;)

Maybe get a second opinion on that though. I'm frequently wrong about this stuff.

I like the way you are thinking but am still somewhat reluctant to jettison both Trengove (past captain and No. 2 pick) and Toumpas (No. 3 pick) as I feel that we are still to see the best football from these two [partly due to injuries] and i would hate to see them thrive under another coach other than Roos.

One from the grapevine at work.

Pick 3 & our 2nd round pick to St Kilda in exchange for Pick 1 & their 3rd round Pick.

Thought process is we agree to not select McCartin 1st up allowing him to fall to St Kilda and we can take Petracca & Brayshaw 1, 2 assuming none of Dangerfield, Shiel or Treloar are interested in coming over. We also then have an additional 3rd round pick to land Frost while St Kilda get 3 picks inside the top 25. They'll trade one for Jaksch with the threat of playing hard ball and taking him in the PSD if GWS don't play ball.

Could work if Stretch goes to 3rd round. Like it.

this would I imagine be conditional on us not having to use our second round pick on Stretch?

Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
