Goodwin's Law?

What a wonderful microcosm of Demonland this thread is. Never fail to make judgements and character assassinations based on half truths and innuendo. Put all your trust for truth in Twitter, Facebook, Demonland and BigFooty. Jump to conclusions based on the feeling of the day and the direction the pendulum is swinging. Ascribe motives without real evidence.

By the way, I thought the Essendon drugs scandal was at its peak in 2012. At least that's the period ASADA concentrated on. Goodwin joined their coaching staff in 2013.

Actually he started there in late 2010.

Coaching career[edit]

On 30 September 2010, Goodwin announced his appointment as assistant coach at Essendon Football Club. On 27 August 2013, it was announced that Goodwin would take over as Essendon's caretaker senior coach for the final round of the 2013 season following the 12 month suspension of James Hird as a result of the Essendon Football Club supplements controversy. On 10 October 2013, Goodwin was promoted to the role of senior assistant coach for the 2014 season, following Mark Thompson's appointment as interim senior coach for the period of James Hird's suspension.[1][5]

On 18 September 2014 Goodwin signed a five-year contract with the Melbourne Football Club which will see him serve for two years as an assistant coach to Paul Roos before taking over as head coach for three years from 2017.[6]

Hird may be looking for a job. Water boy perhaps!

Also the toilets need a good clean - wait, Tanya can do that.

Anyone worried about Goodwin's communication skills after the presser should watch the one-on-one interview with Burgo. Much more impressive.

But if our catchphrase is going to become 'sustained success', think he needs to practice abit more

Love the Avatar Mickey.

As amusing as that exchange was, Moneider96 has been banned for a week. Next time just send me a PM and ask instead of polluting a perfectly clean thread. With your 92.5% uni grades, you should be able to manage that.

The little genius got exactly what he wanted...he outsmarted us all!

With grand final day coming up, Demoneyes is the one to be wary of.

Spoil sport, I wanted to try and match wits with the elite.

Give George 1 role, skills coach!!! Teach them how to kick and handball George!!!

Skills coach at MFC - OMG he deserves danger money for that, and a massive bonus if he produces the goods.

I missed the deleted post, but it sounds a bit like you are referring to "suicide by cop".

Goodwin spent 4 years at Essendon.

Good to see we did our diligence before hiring Goodwin about his time at Essendon during the doping saga. Would have been very surprised if we didn't: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/melbourne-demons/afl-backed-goodwin-for-demons-20150312-142qhb.html

What I really like about the Godowin transition to senior coach is that next year he will start taking on board meetings, sponsor appearances and a host of other off-field stuff. Few 1st year senior coaches get the opportunity to do this, maybe Longmire and Buckley. In addition, Goodwin will probably do the coaches training course. I like that we are setting him up for success.

As an aside, was surprised to read our debt is now $7.2m

Whilst I appreciate Goodwin's credentials football wise I still have some nagging doubts.

It's hard not to; you just never know how Assistant Coaches make the transition to Head Coach...

One thing I learnt from that article is that, looking at her photo, Caro is one of very few who hasn't "trained the house down" this preseason.

I'll presume she is eligible for the golden ticket?

My only concern is that this year we are paying 100% of the cap for the first times in years. I would hope this is due to the recent signings of H and Garlett but more so we are front loading Jones deal. We have just witnessed what Cameron and Boyd commanded abc can expect Hogan will be there abouts assuming he stays on the park.

I saw Goodwin, notebook in hand on the train to a random MFC game in the middle of winter either last year or the year before I'm not sure exactly. But I thought that was great commitment.

I've also been impressed by how he works at training. Has a good balance between demanding and stern but seems to have trust in the players. Working hands on coaching with them will help establish relationships so when he's in charge he's not seen as a dictator (hello Mark Neeld).

But we have no way of knowing how he'll turn out. Right now I'm just excited to see what Roos can achieve in the next 44 games.

Didn't we extned Hogan's contract too? He may be front loaded. Although I prefer we front load players on long term contracts, not short term!

Please elaborate RJay.

As 'rpfc' says there is always some trepidation with an untried assistant but what nags at me more is his decision making off the ground which includes the Essendon situation. I'm also not sure that Gil has the authority to say he is all clear with the ASADA investigation.

I'm not worried.

I agree that his credentials as a player don't guarantee success, but I think certain qualities of his will make him a very good senior coach.

However, even being a very good senior coach does not guarantee anyone success.

Fair enough, it could honestly go either way but at least it would seem we have given ourselves a better chance by the structures we have in place.

Yeah I thought we were out of debt?

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
