Yes absolutely.

Play him up forward. We still need to protect Hogan and give Dawes a chop out.

If we get Frost he obviously replaces Frawley.

Yes from me.

I'm also happy that the day after Greg Swann shot his mouth off about Melbourne's compensation for loosing Frawley that Mahoney has come out and announced that we are into Merrett.

As soon as i heard he was up for trade I was hoping we would try to get him.

Now that we are I hope we do.

It looks to be a very different team in 2015

I think he'd be handy but I'm concerned about his asking price. He's got 2 years left in his contract. I really hope we don't give up much for a player who will be 30 before the season starts.

To me it all comes down to what we would have to give up.

Would Brissy do a straight swap for Tapscott or is that laughable?

I'm not sure, I'm just weary of offering a draft pick for him unless it's near our last one.

What do you think he's worth? Mahoney mentioned that players in Lumumba's age bracket (same as Merrett) tend to go for 2nd/3rd round picks. We'll probably have one of those picks tied up in Lumumba and the other in Stretch. So that means we'll either need to acquire and on trade a pick from another team, or offload players.

Blease, Strauss, Tapscott, etc probably (definitely) don't hold enough currency to get it done, and I'm not sure how many players would want to head to Brisbane...

Don't think the players actually get a say unless they're a free agent. Too bad, so sad in my books. Enjoy up North boys.

But they could just choose not to sign and head for the PSD. I doubt Brisbane would want any of them anyway.

If I was Blease, Tapscott or Strauss and I was offered a contract of any sort, at any club versus going to the PSD then I would be very stupid not to take it...

Have a feeling Blease thinks he's a lot better than what he is (or has shown).

Can't believe the Lions would get rid of him, he is basically the soul of the team post-Browny.

Would have him in a heartbeat at the Dees!

Could there be some three way deal here to get Beams to the Lions?

He's a bit of a thug, exactly what we need.

He could never jump but he was always pretty quick for a big man. Now he's lost a yard or two. Doesn't float my boat.

heart and a tonne of footy smarts, badvibes

I'm completely for it. He'll fill the hole left by Chip and will provide other key position players like Hogan and hopefully Frost time to develop. Doesn't hurt that he can play forward as well.

Hit on Pedersen was 100% fair...no doubt! Have hated him since he arrived - he's a thug, and can play a little. Will be a useful acquisition.

Put it this way, Merrett can't take on Buddy, Reiwoldt, or Reiwoldt...but he won't have to. McDonald, Dunn, Garland, Frost, Merrett - they're pretty good options to have. Will be far less exposed not having to play McDonald on guys a little too shifty for him.

Merrett will be 30 in December. Unless we pay next to nothing for him I don't see the point of recruiting players that can only give us 1-2 years. It might be a short term gain while Roos is still coach but then we are back to square one. Am I missing something or would we be better targetting a player than can give us at least 5 years service.

The supposed interest in Merrett/Frost is a clear Master/Apprentice plan. Frost weighs the same and is two centimetres shorter than Sauce. I'd imagine Roos will make Frost live with Sauce for the next two years and learn everything there is to know, then by that time, Sauce retires and we have a ready-made replacement that has had two years development the "Demon" way.

Astute recruiting.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
