I don't think McKenzie should be the benchmark used when assessing players.

wasnt the benchmark...just a point of comparison

We wont leap frog our list overnight. it will be a composite of incremental betterments together with the odd luck-out quantum progression.

We'll have to do as we can, not always as we'd like.

This is said not to justify taking a Raines type , just for the looking at. Some may work, many won't.

Only the foolish will dismiss EVERYTHING out of hand

Raines and Lions to part company

Raines isnt an earth shatteringly brilliant player. But he'd probably eclipse a fair few of ours.

He'd have a few seasons left and hes fairly consistent.

If gotten cheaply he might be another Dads Army type to bolster and guide the kids in the middle?

just thinking out loud really

thought s ??

Andrew Raines? Are you serious? You want to trade Watts and then replace him with players like this...lol... Farout...

Doesn't overly surprise me that you seem unable to view things on their own merits. I replied to Ron Burgundy earlier as he howled a similarly ridiculous nonsense.

Why would one even affect the other let alone be comparable. Yours is a Strawmans take on things. Thought you might be capable of better and clearer thinking Tatu.

Maybe if we trade the entire list for magic beans and need to fill spots with experienced players.

Im for Raines. Mature body mid/tagger who can play Mckenzies role better then Mckenzie.

Hell even if he just plays at Casey he would bd an upgrade for them at the least.

Happy to write off a 1st year player, yet want to give a chance to 28 year old journey man that can't crack a game in the 15th best team in the league.

Writing a player off and saying someone needs more touches to impact a game are 2 different things but congratulations on putting words in my mouth

Yes from me.

Would be the best tagger on our list.

Would allow Cross to play a more attacking game and Jordie would play at Casey for the majority of the season. He is a much better tagger than Jordie.

I'm surprised so many are saying no.

I can fully understand a No position... as its about a perception, an opinion. I agree that im a bit surprised as I too thought he'd be an interesting inclusion for 2-3 years maybe. The notion that he "cant get a game at the Lions" does so without explanation. They HAVE a midfield. They are building with a bit more youth etc who have a little more composure and experience than many of ours. Hes a relatively OK defensive mid ( very Roosey ) who can tag quite well.

Thing is until we get a bit more sorted and some of our "guns" come up to speed  We WILL need bandaid jobs here and there. it s series of progressions and it wont all happen overnight

But thats ok..it was just a thought and a question.

lol... I can view things individually.... It just annoys me that in in one hand your holding Jacks exit ticket, and in the other your holding the door open for a dud like Raines... Jeez... If your gonna be ruthless and business like in your trading and delisting, then you probably should do the same with your drafting and recruiting...

I do admit that my post was a little cheeky jab though...

Mate, in all seriousness.... I do actually consider these things as entirely different:

Part of reasoning. Jack commands a healthy ticket ( not commensurate with his ticker ) Though Roosey 'says' he;s doing his role ; I and quite a few others who have watched and played the game for many years are absolutely at a loss as to what that role is, if he's doing ok. We can think of lots of things if hes stuffing up.Makes lot more sense, no more palatable , but more sense. He needs fresh air, a new environment etc etc ...pls refer to Watts thread 1-99 lol You know what I mean. Agrre or not there are the arguments over there >>>>

There's a role for a tagger and a lock down defender ...or a run to man in the old days ( maybe still is ) But we lack a lot of players with any verve and a sense of going FORWARD. They're afraid all but. What I see a player like Raines as able to do , even if as a stop gap is to provide that bit of run of the half back and actually have an idea of what to do.hes an older head, calmer than a spring chook etc. He doesn't have to star, just perform a role. Roos likes roles , so he came to mind.

youre turn ...jab away ^_^

Going back to Watts for a sec, His potential departure would free up a bit of cap . That money can go towards who ever we need to throw money at. Raines we'd get for a pittance by comparison. Raines may only be considered a possible B ore a C grader but given the plethora of D and E's its a baby step up...for nothing. By all accounts he's pretty straight up and instantly provides a bit more experience around the club.

I'm happy to be wrong, just thought you might enjoy/deserve my explanation, Hows those planes going !! :)

Nasher, as long as Mc Kenzie gets a game HE IS THE BENCHMARK!!

And the bench at Melbourne ain't that high!

'BB', I think he's struggled to establish himself as an AFL footballer so to me he is no different in that regard to a couple that Neeld picked up. I think we can do better and sure hope we do...

If it's players for a couple more years with good leadership then another Cross would be the answer. I would rather us go a Ball or ROK and I can't see that happening.

Picket, are you one of those posters who screams about 'accepting mediocrity'?

Don't worry, it's a rhetorical question.

i thought i saw one last night, but it turned out to be superman(Andrew Raines)... flying to the "G", to play for us for a dollar an hour...lol...

I wish that our supporters could afford Watts the same "doesn't have to star, just perform a role"... Though its probably to late for that now...

I wouldn't mind your ruthless trading, if you were ruthless at recruiting as well... "Baby step recruiting" isn't ruthless, you should aim higher... If your going to perform the role on here of "the ruthless modern footy" character, then its probably best that you are consistent...lol... Your doing a good job so far though, your character just needs a few tweaks and your there...lol... Your developing nicely, good job...

Horses and courses though TAtu.. Sort of shopping from more than one store with differing budgets.

As I mentioned elsewhere and in line with your notion of ruthless recruiting Id take the Watts money and whatever is needed from Chips paypacket and go kidnap a really good mid. Literally go with a fistful of dollars. An offer hard to refuse .

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
