Hawthorn have some on their board who believe in the theory of not drafting kids.

As with PR,their idea is let other clubs waste time and effort in development and then trade in when the player hits maturity and best .

That way you know what your getting and what the cost is,

Its the smart way, but as some have somewhat rightly pointed out its really only available , in the main , to the more successful clubs. Its definitely the way I'd weight current and future dealings. You might pay a little more later but your strike rate at getting what you want/need goes through the roof as opposed ours, through the floor !!

They've cherry picked some players over the last few years because their access to the draft was limited by them finishing top 4 and the introduction of expansion teams. Don't let them fool you with this dribble.

Never listen to board members, they are full of their own importance and have nothing to do with list management anyway. This might be what they believe but it's plainly wrong. They topped up a good list that was achieved through the draft and that is a clever strategy given the conditions.

Not only is it a known entity but its immediate. On a good day its 2-3 years by our experience before you can really consider a draftee to impact games...the good ol 30-40 games etc.

Only because it's the last draft.

These clubs have all built a solid list based on the draft then added players from there. Geelong have also had the father/ son advantage.

It's to easy for them to say they wouldn't take high picks, they have and they would if they were available.

would swap picks 3/4 and 19 for dangerfield or that type.

And then next year have another look at whats available.

The stats for Watts and Hurley are roughly line ball for the season and for their careers. We would get nothing by swapping the two and Hurley has clearly played in a betetr performing side.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not in a mad rush to get Hurley. But right now I'd certainly have him ahead of Watts. Don't need stats to determine that.

I've got no issue not getting a pp so long as Frawley's compo pick is 3.

By definition, compensation brings you back to square 1, rather than makes you better off.

Getting pick 3, or anything, for Frawley is no argument against getting a PP.

Melb has received 3 PP. 2 Before first round, 1 after 1st round. - Sylvia, Blease Scully

Haw has received 2 PP. Both before first round. Roughead, Ellis.

TJ was a priority pick in '97. We held pick 2 in that draft as well and traded it to Freo for White.

White was later embroiled somehow in our salary cap breaches (at the time) and we duly lost our no.5 pick to Freo in the '99 draft. They ended up with picks 4 & 5 in that '99 draft and selected Pavlich and Leigh Brown ... just another top 5 pick squandered (we find a way)

In 2001, the Hawks traded Croad to Freo for their priority pick (no.1 overall) ... they then selected Hodge with that pick.

I just watched his and Gary's review of melbourne on the AFL website and he basically says that he can't see Melbourne turning it around next year.

He also states that we haven't finished in the finals since 2006...and predicts that not much will change next year and we'll finish in the bottom couple of teams.

So why the hell don't we deserve a priority pick Damian? Don't you think that 8 year is enough for all of us suffering Demons supporters FFS!
